Vivint vs ADT: Home Security Comparison

Learn how ADT and Vivint's home security systems stack up against each other in this head to head comparison.

Two of the best known brand names in home security are Vivint and ADT. The relative heavy weights champions when looking at national home security providers. And while there may be some similarities in their overall approach to sales and marketing, their solutions to homeowners needs are significantly different.

ADT Security

ADT remains the largest, and oldest home security provider in the U.S. They have been providing home and business security services for well over one hundred years. The company also provides a full suite of home automation services through ADT Pulse.

Vivint Security

Originally founded as APX Alarm Security Solutions in 1999, while much younger, has grown into a national contender with a focus on innovation. Vivint has made a name for itself by providing cutting edge security and automation equipment.

Both alarm companies offer professionally installed solutions to help protect and automate the home, sold either directly by the company or through an authorized dealer or third party. So where do they differ and which one offers the best solution for your home?

Find out as we put Vivint and ADT head-to-head comparing what they have to offer to determine the best home security system.

Key Differences: Vivint vs. ADT

Contracts

While many conditions and obligations in service agreements are fairly standard across the alarm industry, it is extremely important to read – and understand – the entirety of the contract before you sign it. One important difference between ADT and Vivint is the length of the contract, with Vivint requiring 42-60 months of commitment and ADT the more traditional 36 months. Be sure your contract lines up with what you were told before you sign and legally obligate yourself to the terms.

Installation

Both ADT and Vivint install their systems professionally; however, customer reviews and comments suggest anecdotally, at least, that Vivint offers a much more standardized experience for customers during the installation and setup of their security system compared to the unevenness seen within ADT’s independent authorized dealer network.

Reputation/Sales

Vivint continues to rely on door-to-door direct marketing and sales to expand their customer base which has cost them some points in customer satisfaction. Whether over-aggressive, poorly trained or deliberately deceitful, there have been numerous complaints by Vivint customers who felt the product, service and price they ended up with did not align with what their sales rep had promised.

Monitoring

Vivint uses 100% cellular monitoring to keep their monitoring centers in communication with the security system. Cellular communication is recognized as the safest method of monitoring communication. While ADT does offer cellular communication, the company’s less expensive service packages utilize a physical landline connection to communicate with the monitoring station which may be easily disabled by severing the wires or cables.

Technology

It appears ADT and Vivint have chosen slightly different paths regarding connected home technology. Vivint devotes internal resources with their own research & development team to design new, award-winning equipment like their doorbell camera and cloud service capabilities in addition to integrating with other leading 3rd party smart devices like the Nest Learning Thermostat and Amazon Echo. ADT seems more focused on expanding their Canopy services to support integration with new device innovations from 3rd parties like Nest and LG rather than building their own.

ADT vs Vivint Comparison Break Down

Company Reputation

Winner: ADT

ADT’s history as the oldest continues to help the company maintain its market position as the largest home security provider in the country. As Vivint and other rivals release new equipment, technology and innovations in an effort to dislodge them, ADT, though sometimes slower in adoption of new technology, continues to focus on personal, professional service and maintaining their overall positive brand reputation.

Pricing

Winner: Vivint

While package and service pricing in our comparison above between ADT and Vivint is razor close, we’re giving the edge to Vivint for providing homeowners with more flexible options on customizing the equipment included in their package.

Ease of Installation

Winner: Draw

Since both companies offer professional installation and service for their equipment, ease of installation is a draw. Anecdotally, Vivint seems able to provide a more consistent professional experience through their network of installers based on user reviews; however, it isn’t enough for us to give them the nod definitively.

Equipment & Technology

Winner: Vivint

Vivint leads in this category as their internal R&D team continues to develop award-winning smart home devices and innovations while integrating with other third party providers. The race to the complete connected home solution is on and so far, Vivint is the dominant leader in the home security field. We expect ADT to make a play to become more dominant in this category with their Canopy service, check back with us for future announcements and analysis as we learn more.

Warranty

Winner: Vivint

A lifetime equipment warranty comes standard with Vivint packages through their Premium Service, this provides customers with lifetime repair and replacement of any defective equipment at no cost. If you decline this service, you’re equipment is still covered, but you will be charged a service/repair fee for replacement of defective equipment after an initial coverage period of 120 days. ADT only offers this service as part of their QSP and requires a service visit fee, making Vivint the clear choice in this category.

Support & Resources

Winner: Draw

Both companies offer extensive resources and support options for customers, including on-site service and repair. ADT offers 24/7 phone customer support, extensive online resources, and email web forms with a typical response time of 72 hours. Vivint offers 24/7 customer support and online chat during the business week from 6AM – 8PM, online resources and ticket submission with one day turnaround as well as Vivint Rep ID check system so homeowners can verify the identity of their Vivint representative.

The Overall Winner: Vivint

We like ADT and believe they will remain a dominant force in the home security space for a very long time. However, in this battle of the heavyweights, Vivint has come out on top this year, but don’t count ADT out. In fact, we can’t wait for these two to go into a round two head to head matchup next year as we expect good things to come out of Boca Raton Florida after the recent announcement of ADT’s acquisition by Apollo.
