Ask lots of questions! If they won’t answer them, don’t do business with them
An APX sales rep came to our house around 8:00 Tuesday evening, so I answered the door thinking, “OK, I’ll just answer to get rid of this guy.” But then he started telling me about the alarm system and piqued my interest.
My wife and I had talked about getting an alarm system, but we have been living in our house for almost a year now and have yet to do it, so I figured now was as good a time as any. The sales rep was very polite and very informative. He even offered to take his shoes off when I invited him in the house. He showed us his badge and let us write down all his information and everything. After talking to him for about an hour, my wife and I decided we needed to think it over on our own for a day or two, and do some research because we had never heard of APX before. He had no problem with this, and encouraged us to do all the research we wanted and come up with as many questions as we could. So we set an appointment for him to come the next day and finish our conversation.
Before he came, I read as many reviews as I could and the one thing I learned was to know what you are getting in to and read the contract before you sign it! I also wrote down questions about all of the other little complaints that people had, like activation fees, police permits, billing dates, contract terms, contract length, etc. When we met up with the sales rep again he answered every single one of my questions thoroughly and honestly. He even offered to “re-imburse” my for the first month’s bill, since we did not have the money right then and there to pay. He gave me $80 cash out of what I believe was his own pocket. The installer made it to the house about 5 minutes before we finished all the paperwork, and he did not start drilling any holes or anything until he spoke with us. They finished in less than an hour. The entire experience went as smooth as possible. I feel like we lucked out with our sales rep, who I believe was actually a manager, not just a sales rep. After reading all the reviews about bad sales reps who lied and left out details, I’m just so glad we got our guy.
My advice to anyone looking to get an alarm system is to do your research and ask tons of questions! If they are not willing to answer your questions, or if they do not want to let you do your own research, then don’t do business with them. I am %100 satisfied with APX so far. I will be sure to come back in a few weeks to update how I like the actual equipment and service.
Best bang for your buck
I have had APX alarm for over a year. We are extremely happy with it. We feel extremely safe with it I would not want to be without it at this point. I do not have a phone nor do I need a phone with APX. We also have two fire alarms one upstairs and one down which are connected to the alarm system if we are not home and there is a fire the fire dept with be contacted. How can you beat that? I don’t know why all the bad reviews look at other prices see what you are getting. Most alarms require a phone and if they don’t you are going to pay..I have done my research and APX is the best price available for what you are getting.
Great modern technology
I recently had APX system installed in my house. The sales and installation folks were very friendly and professional. The activation and monthly service fees were explained clearly and were double-confirmed over the phone. I am very happy with the system. I use my smartphone to control the alarm. Very cool.
Understand their sales model – take it or leave it
We’ve recently installed a APX alarm system I can’t say that I have anything really horribly awful to say about it. The hardware is top rate material and although the door to door sales pitch and install isn’t for everyone it is what it is. It’s the companies business model and you either like or you don’t.
They work like this. They show up after supper and tell you they are in the area installing this system and are looking for a few houses to setup free systems minus the monthy service charge. They try and convince you “only today” once you’ve signed the installers show up and install asap. Again it’s the business model. No question it’s pushy but atleast it’s done with within 2 hours. Not for everyone.
You’ll then be signed into a long contract and yes it’s about $15 more a month than the other guys but remember they didn’t charge for any hardware or install fees so it almost evens out. Plus the system has a internal cell phone back system in the event your land line goes down. Now yes we could all argue this does or doesn’t ever happen but then again you have the backup option there so this also a reason the montly fee is higher.
I will say this too. When the “techs” showed up to install the system and I say “techs” lightly I was a little scared. The guys looked like they walked out of school yesterday and I wouldn’t be surprised if they did but I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt and this is why. I’ve moved many times over the last few years and everytime I call our very respectible local cable company that has been around since I was a child I always expect professional installers to show up. When they do with their fancy truck and all the gear they haven’t got a clue and keep telling me, sorry we can’t drill into that or we can do this. I wonder, why the truck and gear? Everyone is the same. They all hire guys with zero training and basically off the street so if you go with APX be advised the installers might look a little wet under the ears but remember the last phone/cable guy who came to your house. Wasn’t he the same?
At the end of the day, the system works great my family feels safer at home and really all that matters. If you can look past the pushy sales pitch and the monthly fee you’ll be fine and won’t have any complaints.
The whole neighborhood got a good deal
These guys were great. The came to the door offering free alarm systems with a monitoring contract and the advertisement for them of the solar-lighted APX sign in the front yard. My house had a built-in alarm that wasn’t subscribed to a monitoring service. They were able to tap into that system with no problem, replacing only the control panel with an awesome touch screen one. No scams, all fees and charges were shown to me in advance, and they were all kiss-butt friendly. Myself and quite a few of my neighbors all signed up.
We got a knock at our door last night around 6pm.
Salesman was a nicely dressed younger man and he very unagressively offered a few fliers about the alarm system, and said that they were trying to promote in the area and were offering a free system with free installation. The main point that he brought was the fact that the alarm system didn’t require a home phone, as my wife and I are cell phone only users. I was also sold on the internet access abilities, and cell phone enabled functionality.
I invited him in (to get out of the 90+F heat) and he continued to provoke a sale. He never got pushy or aggressive. One hour later, I was signing paperwork. One hour after that, an installer was at the house, ready to put it all together. We ended up getting the touch screen main panel, a 2nd smaller control panel, smoke/fire detector, motion detector, 3 doors, and 6 window sensors.
We’ve had the system for 24 hours now, and are satisfied so far. It is around $15/month cheaper than any other monitored alarm system, and even cheaper considering I don’t need to pay around $25-30 a month for a home phone line. I even got a text message from the salesman this morning, following up and making sure I was satisfied with the installation.
I’ve read many reviews about how this company is bad and messes up the financial aspect, so I’ve got my fingers crossed.
Speaking from personal experience … this company is the best around!
If you don’t take anyone’s word for it. Take mine… I’ve done the trials, I’ve done the checks and the research. APX IS THE BEST!
Ryan Keil showed up at my door LATE. I’m a former Marine and now a Federal Officer, my wife is Army Active Duty and we have 3 small children and really don’t have time or patience for Door-to-Door sales. But, this was one of the best things I could have done for myself and my family.
I’m very technologically advanced and love new tech. Ryan really wasn’t a Salesman per say. I’m a salesmen. He just believed in his product and was very sincere. That’s what sold me(Which is VERY hard to do). I didn’t even let him in my house until his installation tech showed up(After only 30 minutes of saying YES)and I was able to inspect the quality of the panel. The equipment and technology of the system is astounding and even though it was somewhat of a inconvenience for them to install it that night. I was very impressed with the time frame in which the installation took place and the workmanship. The tech was also a Ryan (Fredrickson I believe). He was like a little machine running all around the house doing all kinds of different stuff. I know cause I followed him everywhere.
I messed with the system a little and made some mistakes on it. I called that night and in not even 1 ring I got a VERY knowledgeable and friendly customer rep. who helped me fix the system over the phone and I didn’t even need to do anything. Since, I’ve called several additional times, spoke to all different reps. and all have been exactly what the first rep was. Professional, courteous and VERY knowledgeable and informative. I’ve since done additional research after the fact and have come across more pro’s then Con’s about everything. NO ONE has the technology in their basic system like APX, for just a little extra a month.
Here’s how I look at it. They put in more then $2,000 worth of equipment, I priced it all in comparison. For $50. a month. $50. a month, $600. a year X 3 years is only $1,800. toward paying the system. Making the Monitoring Free. I see the value in it considering the equipment is high quality.
This company has come a long way and I would recommend them to anyone. Overall. APX earns a 5 out of 5 from me and my family and I’ll sell their systems for them to all my family and neighbors. However. My checking account has not been charged yet. I already received monies for referrals. We’ll see if they charge the proper amount or not. With that, they would be flawless in my book. I’ll keep you posted, because I feel you have a right to know.
Now have complete peace of mind
I live in an area that has since become a haven for “out of town” and deadbeat landlords. What was once a nice area has become dotted with slumlords who dont care about their properties or who the rent to.
Not too long ago, someone attempted to break into the house across the street – a young couple live there with their infant son. Thankfully their stormdoor window didnt yield to the brick that was bashed against it. The intruder ran off however it opened my eyes to my own vulnerability. I gave the idea of an alarm system a great deal of thought – even asking other neighbors who had systems what they thought.
I had the chance to speak with several agents from other companies and went with APX. I was impressed right from the start with the professional and courteous sales people who took the time to work with me – instead of forcing me into a contract. I never felt that I was being coerced into a sale. Ultimately, the day came for the installation and again – I am completely satisfied with the job done by their technician. He went about his business, explaining step by step what he was doing and showed me, top to bottom, how to use my new system. I even decided that I needed to add-on to my sensors (an oversight on my part) and contacted the installer who came by the next day. This system is completely expandable to meet my needs as my household changes.
On the few instances where I inadvertently set off the alarm, the response was immediate and the monitoring rep was considerate and polite. My sincerest thank to APX and their reps for giving me back my peace of mind. I proudly display their sign on my front lawn.
APX has continued their excellent record of top notch service and completely fabulous customer contact. I could not be more happy with my system.
Company is great with helpful updates and communication
I have had Apx for 3 years now and I love it! I really did my research on this company and have been very pleased, the reps were kind and clear. I was even contacted to be informed that a battery was low on one of my sensors. I cant say enough about how happy i have been. I had ADT before. My home was broken into and by the time the police showed up, all the police had left to do was take finger prints. Lol. Honestly I’m sure some people may have had a bad experience here and there. But there is always a sour apple in every bunch. I have been very happy.
Happy to recommend
We have been very happy with the service and follow up from this company. There were items promised after the inital install and APX was here at the scheduled time to install them as promised. The system works as expected and I believe it is state of the art. I would have no problem recommending this company to family or friends.
Very respectful and professional
After checking with all of the local and national companies that offer security systems, we decided to go with APX after a visit from one of the salesmen. I normally do not like the door-to-door type, but we had received visits from all the major companies. The salesman was (unlike the other companies) completely helpful, not pushy at all, very informative, courteous and professional (a big selling point for us). After seeing the features (iphone/computer monitoring, etc) we decided to have a system installed thinking probably set up an appointment, wrong, they were there in 20 minutes, and the system was installed in an hour. The control panel looks great, does what I need it to do and the service has been top notch so far. The contract was for 39 months and pretty self expanatory, also around the same price I was quoted from ADT and others. I will update this posting good or bad based upon any further experience.
Love having remote access
My wife and I had talked about getting an alarm system in the past, and finally got one. We had heard a lot of good things about APX, so we decided to go through them for our service. They technician did a very good job installing our system and was very professional. We absolutely love having the cellular system and the touch screen keypad. It all works and looks great, and we don’t have to purchase a home phone to run it. Very satisfied with the alarm and the company so far. Would recommend their service to anyone and products.
After comparing all of the companies, picked APX
I did a lot of research of various alarm companies. This website had a lot of horror stories for all of the companies that I looked at.
After awhile I just figured that reps from other companies were posting bad reviews. I also looked at the BBB website and found ratings for the companies. APX was a B rating compared to some A and A- ratings. I was concerned about this but I dug deeper. It seems the lower BBB rating was due to some of the sales people. They would knock on doors, sell the product then move on. Seems that they didn’t have to provide state licensing information. So that got them in trouble in a few states. But this is not a reflection on the system. So I upped their rating since I did not deal with someone going door-to-door.
I talked with reps at ADT Broadview/Brinks, Frontpoint (a small company, but impressed) and Protect America. Frontpoint had a very good system but they and Protect America would ship me the system for my installation. Not going to happen. I could probably do it but the cost was still in the range of the others so why should I do it. Broadview/Brinks was a good company but I did not like the system and the price was still similar to APX. I was not impressed with ADT since I required a lot of information from all the companies, I was surprised that after an hour on the phone with ADT rep when I refused to give him credit card information or agree to the system he HUNG UP ON ME. Isn’t that a laugh :). But I dealt with ***** at APX and he was never pushy. We had at least 3 phone conversations and ultimately he gave me a deal he said I could not repeat. But it is not in writing. So I got 13 points for free and he threw in 2 key fobs. The system has been installed and no problems. Although the installation could have been better, the smoke detector on the ceiling is not exactly centered. The two installers had their ID’s and they took their time to install, test and explain in great detail how the system worked. I especially liked the cellular communication that the system provides. No cut phone or cable lines. Well for now I am completely happy but if anything arises I will be back. L. Wilcox
Great response time
Hi!! Just a couple of minutes ago I enter the wrong code and 5-8 minutes later, police arrived at my home. It seems like I enter the Panic code and where the police can hear everything that happens in the house, of course my son was playing Call of Duty on his playstation and it sounded like something bad was going on inside the house. The response was IMMEDIATE!
(Note from admin: The police are never directly connected to your home. The reviewer above is most likely referring to the monitoring station and its staff.)
Got stuck paying for two contracts
While I have been happy with APX, I too got scammed by the salesman assuring me I could “get out” of my ADT contract. I didn’t realize I still had several years on my ADT contract, so now I am stuck paying for double monitoring service. I am on the brink of bankruptcy after losing my job and not sure what will happen.
Work with a good sales rep
Ok, there are a lot of bad reviews on this company, but it is mostly on the side of the salesmen and technicians. So after a little research I found the problem. This company recruits people to sell and such but isn’t able to do ethic control on them when they are out in the field. So my suggestion is to call the company if you are thinking of buying and ask the customer service (which is amazing by the way) and see if you’re being lied to or not. Don’t buy from the liars, buy from the sales that are honest because they will get you the right technician and do the paperwork correctly and make your life a whole lot easier.
System worked just as it should
I had my APX alarm system installed in January of this year, 2010. My friend, who was recently coming over to borrow a tool from me, entered into my home and didn’t know the alarm code. I forgot to give it to him being that the alarm is new in my home. He called me worried as an operator asked him for his name and password over the intercom system on the keypad. I rushed home, I was two minutes away, and found the cops had already arrived. My friend told me that it wasn’t longer then five minutes before the police arrived. I showed my ID and thanked the officer for the fast response as well as apologized for the false call. My friend was very satisfied with the response time and is a firm believer in the assistance alarm systems could provide in a time of need. The system worked exactly as I hoped it would.
Great first experience
I’ve had APX for almost a year now and am very happy with my service. I can’t compare it to any other services, because this is the first alarm company I’ve ever used. I’m in a 3 year contract, but I’ve never been one to shy away from the contracts (cell phone, satellite, etc.). The way I see it, it locks in the price so I don’t have to worry about it going up and I’m not moving anywhere any time soon. Even if I did move, they’ll move/reinstall the service for free. Every interaction I’ve had with them has been professional and courteous, so no complaints there. I know they monitor the service well, because I’ve accidentally set it off a couple times and within the minute they were calling my cell to check if everything was ok. The equipment runs great, never had any problems there besides user error. All in all, I’m very satisfied with the entire experience and would definitely recommend them to friends and family.
Company is on top of their game
After much research my wife and I decided to go with APX. During our research we discovered many negative reviews from this company, however most of the other companies were rude and pushy. We compiled bids from many companies and APX was by far the best. The installer showed up at his appointed time, installed the alarm system and when he completed we decided that the spot originally picked for the control panel (i.e. keypad) was not where we wanted it. The installer was eager to please us and relocated the panel without any problem. We were promised a second control panel which the installer said was back ordered. I contacted APX today, they set up an appointment time and will install the panel next week. What was impressive was that after I talked to them from work, my wife was contacted by APX to schedule the install. She was not aware I had already accomplished this until the lady on the phone went into my account and discovered I had already done so. They provided all they said they would including what I consider very good customer service. They seem to be on top of their game.
Saved customer’s life
I placed my alarm in in August 09. I live in San Juan Puerto Rico. I found the USA representative very helpful and the techs that work on staff great. On Jan 29, 2010 an intruder attempted to enter my house. The alarm went off, and Apx called me right away to tell me the sensor went off in the kitchen. They called the police and they were at my house within 5 minutes. They saved my life. So many complaints here on this board, but let me tell you, this alarm company saved my life. Yes, it is expensive, but it is worth every single penny. They are professional and a great company. I think they are a great company! Thanks APX!
Don’t like door to door sales, but really happy with the product
Overall a great experience. I got a knock on the door, but everything was explained very clearly and I read the contract thoroughly before signing. APX monthly monitoring was actually LESS expensive than others in my area. I knew I had made the right decision when I actually bumped one of the sensors…and had a call within 10 seconds asking for the password. Going door to door may not be the best way of doing it, but the service is worth it.
Paying more but saving money
I signed up with APX several months ago and have been very pleased. Although the monthly monitoring fees are about double what I was paying before, I was able to cancel my telephone landline because the APX monitoring is all cellular and not through the telephone landline as was my previous monitoring company. I was thinking of cancelling the landline anyways and just use a cell phone. So, at the end of the day I am actually saving money. Also, APX provides excellent service. I have had a few false alarms and they have responded instantly. I also recently constructed a detached garage which I wanted alarmed also. APX supplied me with the necessary hardware at a very reasonable price. I don’t normally sign contracts with door to door salespeople but in this case I’m glad I did.
Took a while, but the reps handled the problem
Although I wish it had not taken so long, a representative from APX Alarm’s own consumer advocacy division recently contacted us about an ongoing unresolved contract dispute. After reviewing our circumstances, APX called us and offered a fully satisfactory resolution. This is a large and growing company and I hope this is indicative of improved attention to consumer issues. If so, look for complaints to lower (there will always be some) and their BBB rating to move up.
No complaints yet
I just had my alarm installed today. I called and ordered the service, so no door to door stuff. Installation was fine, but took longer the expected. They told me the install would take about 3 hours, but it took 4. The rep on the phone was great, and the installer was nice too and did a professional job. No complaints so far.
Read your contract
I read with some regret the review posted on 9/18/09 about the poor experience someone had with APX and that they strongly recommended against using them. They also were unsure if it was a real company.
My advice, read the contract, by law he had 3 days to change his mind and have the system uninstalled without a penalty. The contract would state if there is a cancellation fee and how long the contract would run for. Had he read the contract he would have known all the information he was complaining about and gotten out of it within the 3 day grace period. Buyer beware, read the contract!
We were also approached late one afternoon regarding an alarm installation. The sales representative was very knowledgeable and we agreed to the install. It was also done in the evening but it only took a few hours. We do not have small children so the noise was not an issue. We even had a small problem and the tech came back very promptly and fixed it. Our alarm has been in for a year now and I am glad we have it.
They are a real company and are legitimate. We had a few instances where a door was not closed properly and came open and set the alarm off. The system worked as advertised and we were able to speak with the monitoring service over the alarm panel and get everything taken care of. Had we not had the alarm our family room door would have been standing open in the middle of the night in January for anyone to come in.
We also just had a battery die in one of the key fobs, not too long ago. The alarm panel knew the battery was low and notified the monitoring service who in turn notified us. We got new batteries for the fob and it was reset in no time. The customer service was very helpful about silencing the alarm panel reminder until the key fob was reset and told us how to replace the batteries.
I think we got a great deal, 3 door sensors, a motion sensor, two smoke detectors – didn’t cost anything except the monitoring fee. We had always wanted an alarm and now we have one at a very affordable cost.
