Long time customer
I have had an alarm system with APX now Vivint since 2/10. Since then with the the upgraded energy management package I have saved money monthly with my utility bill. Though I have not had any issues with service or product I can not give my opinion on that sense. I can tell you that every time I have talked to a Vivint representative it has been a positive experience for me. Each time my alarm has gone of (most times my fault) a vivint representative contacted immediately and everything was resolved. I would definitely recommend vivint to anyone. They do have a contract, so I recommend you read through it, our salesmen explained it in detail to me and I knew what I was getting in to. I can’t express how much the new system they gave me has made my life simpler and gave me peace of mind with the ability to set me alarm with my phone and adjust the temperature in my house.
House was protected from burglars
I’ve had a Vivint alarm system now for 3 months. At first I didn’t care to ever get an alarm but figured why not because the Vivint rep said the equipment was free and it’s $58/month with the thermostat. He said I would save $50/month on my utility bill. I was probably an easy sell for him cause I was like whatever, I’ll do it. I’m not saving $50/month like he said I would, BUT, I am saving about $25-$30 each month I’ve had it so far. Also I did have a break-in a few weeks ago and pretty much the alarm did the job. I was notified on my cell while at the grocery store that police were heading to my house due to the alarm being triggered from my side door and the monitoring people heard some kind of commotion going on inside. I was pretty freaked out at first but as far as I know, my door frame was busted up a little but I haven’t found that anything was taken from my house probably cause the siren and Vivint talking through the panel scared the person out of my house. Anyway, the alarm works and of course I’m glad I was easily persuaded to get the Vivint alarm. I made fun of my brother cause I told him to get one too but he thought alarm systems were preposterous! Especially from a door-to-door salesman! Literally 3 days later he had a break-in and lost about $10,000+ worth of belongings, jewelry, iPad, money, etc. all cause he didn’t want to spend an extra $50/month.
Only positive things to say
Have nothing bad to say about this company-great customer service, was not pressured to make purchase and system working great!
Honesty goes a long way
I had a vivint guy come to my door 2 weeks ago. He asked if we wanted to update our alarm and I asked him what the update was. We invited him in after admitting we didn’t really have an alarm but just a sign. He was upfront about the price to have it monitored and to activate the system. I’m not really comfortable with long term contracts so when the vivint rep told me about the conditions I was impressed with how honest he was about it, which gained my trust. I read the whole thing and asked questions for about 30 mins. In the end I had it installed and am very happy I did. It was obviously a sales presentation but we had wanted a system anyway and this was the best deal for our money had we found. We had a good experience with the technician that put it in as well. I love the app for my phone too!
Overall good experience
I thought the sales tactics were exceptionally high-pressure — take this deal now or forget it. The only thing that made me go with them is I had been thinking about adding a smoke alarm to my alarm system, but my current system wanted to much for it. With Apx, since I was already wired, they used all my existing plus threw in the smoke alarm, a glass breaker, and a panic necklace free. After signing with them and coming on line to read the reviews I got a sick feeling in my stomach.
After being with them for 3 years, I must honestly say that I have no complaints. Even though the system has gone off, there was always a reason (picture fell down in living room causing glass breaker to go off, sensor fell down because patio door). I was always called, and so were the police. I had always wondered how well my smoke detector worked, and I got to test it on Thanksgiving Day, no less! Grease spilled in my oven and smoke was everywhere. I was called, they asked if they should call the fire department, and gave me some tips for getting the grease cleaned up so I could go back to cooking!
Another time that I was impressed with them was when credit card was changed from master card to American Express, and because I ONLY use that card to pay Apx/Vivint, I did not monitor it closely except to pay the bill. I got all from them after they were unable to bill me for 2 months, and I told them what happened. It caused me to be 3 months behind, and they offered to have me catch up in installments instead of paying all at once.
While I believe everything that I have read about them, I just have to say that I have had no problems whatsoever with them. I just called to ask if the system was compaitible with digital phones. They said no and told me about the new system. They encouraged me to read it on line and call back with any questions. I did, they answered my questions and said please just think about it and let us know if you want to change.
Fine product – terrible billing practice
I would not recommend this company to anyone. Although the service has been good, it works fine, the billing department is a joke. I have been with this company for 3 years. I guess I did not read the fine print, because when I went to cancel my service with 26 days left on the contract they told me they needed 30 days and that I would be forced to be with them for another year. Four days late cost me $600 dollars and I didn’t even know I was late. Ive never heard of a 1 year renewal, Month to month understandable. They offered to lower my bill 10% for the next year. What a joke. Buyer beware
Bad billing practices
I got Vivint system installed on Feb-21-2010. I am happy with the way system is working, and the facilities like the ability to control the system from a computer or mobile device. However, I had an issue with their billing. During the initial setup process, I requested them to bill me on 1st of every month, because thats when I take care of all my bills at home. I had paid one month’s bill in advance during installation. However, I came to know on Feb-27th when I talked to their customer service, that I was going to be charged one month’s service charge on 1st. Basically, I was being charged 1 month’s charge for just a week of usage. I tried talking to them, but their response was “Thats how we bill”. Finally, I was forced to change my billing date from 1st of every month to 21st of every month, so that I wont be charged that extra.
Happy to stay with the company
I have my alarm for little over a year, my experiences have all been good. On the rare occassion that the alarm has been activated or power failure I have been contacted in minutes by the monitoring staff. I have not had cause to contact customer services regarding billing. I didn’t feel pressured into signing the contract and was happy with the amount for the monthly service that was guarenteed not to increase for three years. Installation was fast and up and running on the same day as signing the contract. I have no complaints and no plans to change my provider.
Good service and common sense
I’ve had APX since July, 2010. I have had nothing but positive experiences with functionality of the ‘GO’ System, response time and customer service. As far as cancelling contracts, I haven’t had to deal with this yet, but anytime you want to end a contract, do it in writing, at least 30 days prior and send a letter return receipt requested.
System saved customer’s home
We’ve had this system 3 years, nothing but good to say. Chimes are great with a teenager and foster kid. One attempted break in stopped when alarm sounded, another while we were gone APX called police and my son, within a minutes, son responded, police took about 4 hours, private security may not be too bad. Due to faulty oven going into self clean for hours, a fire started on towel hanging on door, fire alarm went off, fire department responded, APX called us, my son and neighbor. Fireman said without the alarm the house would have been a loss. I doing some rewiring, moving panel etc. Managed to loose all settings, the sent tech to re-configure for only a $35 trip charge. The support lady, who was excellent offered to step me through, but with 4 wireless door sensors, 2 motion detectors, and fire, I decided it was well worth the money, I didn’t want to punch in all that information, but from previous experience I know they would have done it if I asked.
I have been a customer for over three years and have been very happy with the service I have received. APX has called and checked on us during power outages, police have been sent promptly for an alarm, customer service has been great. I am upgrading to their new GO! Control panel which supports cell phones, and I’m interested to see how that goes. We have had an alarm in our home(s) for the past thirty years, and APX’s quality has been as consistently high as the other companies we have dealt with.
Good until you have to move
Good company UNTIL you want to cancel. I’m in the military and was reassigned overseas so naturally since they don’t have service in Germany I wanted to cancel. When I told them over the phone and in writing I wanted to cancel they constantly told me they’d call me back or the departments who I needed to talk to weren’t working that day. I specifically told the sales representative 2 years earlier when I signed the contract I was in the military and he said there would be no problem should I get reassigned for me to cancel. Needless to say I’m still calling after weeks of dealing with them to try and cancel and they’re still automatically taking my money out of my account.
Good product, terrible service
I really like the security system but their billing department is totally incompetent. I advise you to never give them your bank account number. They just took $377.98 more than was owed out of my checking account. Thank God that I had the fund in the account to cover but it is the principle. Then they tell me it could be 30 days before I get my money back. I of course immediately switched my billing to a credit card. If they screw it up again I will just dispute the entire charge and let them chase me.
Only compliant is the customer service
The only complaint I have about APX is their customer service sucks. The whole billing department sucks. You can neever get a direct answer for yor question. I tried three time over a period of 70+ days to find out what my bill was for the upgrade no one could tell me. So one day I get the whole bill deducted from my account. It was suspose to be on a 3 moths payment plan + my nornal monthly service bill. I even told them each time I called 3 month plan, 3 month plan, yes Mr *****. I DO NOT like that auto-deduction crap because they take your money and you are screwed unless you take legal action against them. The installers were great people knew what they were doing and polite and patient. The best thing is a local security company. So that is what I plan to do. I can’t drive to Utah to complain and as I said customer service sucks, no help there.
Service helped protect daughter
I have loved my alarm. I was not going to get one when I moved to the new neighborhood because I have never had one even in a very large city and then when I lived in the woods. I was sold on it when the man told me that the alarm chimes and tells you what door has been opened. At the time my daughter with Down Syndrome was 6 and was a flight risk. She wore a GPS monitor from the sheriff’s department just in case she was to wonder off and get lost. Prior to getting the alarm actually the very first day in our new house… she ran off and was found 30 mins later 3 streets over. So… when the chime was mentioned I was sold. I set off the alarm several times by accident and they called very quickly. The police were even sent bc I couldn’t get to my phone fast enough and they could not get a hold of my husband. The first time it was set off the same officer came that helped find my daughter. I felt very humilated but safe at the same time. I also like all of the functions of the device. It has so much that I didn’t ever use it all. They gave me a DVD to watch to help understand all the functions and how to use them. I hope you enjoy your APX alarm.
Happy to recommend this company
The APX salesman was knowledgeable in sales tactics, but factual. I intially dismissed his sales talk as the usual high pressure presentation with some exagerations, but after about 30 minutes of explaining the system and it’s features, in addition to the 42 month contract..we signed up. The system is everything represented. It is so easy and intuitive to use, it’s a pleasure. It tells you specifically if there’s a problem and can’t be armed, “front door open” for example. There is almost no learning curve whatsoever with this system. My wife was skeptical, but now loves it. It also comes with a warranty for the full 42 months. Service calls are free for the first 120 days and a flat fee of $35 thereafter…a relative bargain in the alarm industry. I would recommend them at this point.
Pushy sales, but good product
I got this alarm system installed by a very pushy door-to-door salesman who said the installation would be free and he could use my existing system with a few upgrades.
Since I already had sensors on every access point and a motion detector and key fob, he said I could get 3 additional options for free. I chose fire alarm, the medic chain that you take everywhere in the house with you (mostly for seniors) and a glass breaker by my patio door. I then found out while he was there (glad I thought to do this) that I had 3 more months under contract with Protection One, so I told the salesman no deal. He offered to pay for the 3 months right there on the spot after calling his company. He paid me in cash! I’m really suspicious now, don’t know why I didn’t stop there. They installed the system, tested everything, reprogrammed my key fob, and installed a new updated panel.
The next day at work, I googled APX alarm and got a very sick feeling in my stomach reading all the reviews. I thought that this is horrible, how could I, who prided myself in doing homework before any purchase, be so stupid? Well, nothing I could now but just go with it.
I must say, after 3 years, that I am very satisfied with the company. I have had absolutely no concerns. My alarm has gone off once, and they called me at home, at work, then on my cell until they reached me. The police had come to my home and left after seeing that there didn’t seem to be an intrusion. I actually called the police and got the report from the responding officer. I decided to go home anyway to see what had caused the alarm, and there was a picture that had fallen off my wall, the glass broke, and of course, the glass breaker went off just as it should!
I have also set off the medical alarm alert by mistake and someone always responded. Once I couldn’t think of my code and they said they were going to have to send someone out if I couldn’t think of it and I quickly looked it up in my cell phone and could give it to them.
So in short, even though their sales tactics might be strong-armed, I have had no complaints from the monitoring and response.
Product works, but billing and services are junk
APX Alarms, where to start….find another provider. Does the APX Alarms system work? In short, yes. Does APX Alarms provide immediate support to customers when the alarm is set off? Yes. Does APX Alarms provide superior customer support for billing and customer satisfaction? In short, no. If you are even considering this company, I warn you find another provider. I had been a customer for 2 years. Always paid my bill on time, always received great response from APX Alarms. Then, I tried to cancel my service to look for a lower rate and try a different provider. After two solicitation calls from APX Alarms, 4 calls attempting to cancel, speaking with “a manager”, and two additional call backs from APX Alarms represtatives, I still was not able to cancel my service.
Completely happy with the service and system
APX is my security provider, and I am a 100% satisfied with their service.
I do not believe for one moment that half of the negative reviews on here are from real customers of apx, because I would like to believe that if these people have the clear ability to write, they would have enough brain power to read a ONE PAGE contract and decide for themselves if they want the PAID CONTRACTED SERVICE, they have been offered, key word OFFERED. I have 7 properties, 4 residential and 3 comercial. ALL have APX alarm systems. I was approached by one of their young men, last year and went through the same thing you all, so bitterly complain about, let me delineate:
– The salesmen are just that, salesmen, they WILL want you to make a decision on the spot (THEY DO NOT WORK FOR FREE, as I am sure none of you bitter people do). So make up your mind.
– They are ALWAYS, knowledgeable about the product, and they explain everything included, and I even talked to the company on the phone before they left my house.
-I find it hard to believe ANYONE CAN BE FORCED to acquire something like that, unless they tie you down and point a gun at you (in which case you should call the police).
-As it was with me, you all have SEVERAL chances to say no, several, if you get the product is because you want it.
– The proposal is actually very simple, even kids should understand: They have a service, it costs this much, there’s a promotion today, it’ll cost this much, for this long a contract. DO YOU WANT IT?
-They are not a charity, you greedy people, they have top of the line service and gear. PAY FOR IT. OR SAY NO.
-They don’t target seniors, they target anyone that owns a home. (If your senior can’t make decisions by themselves, shouldn’t be living by themselves, be responsible).
SUMMARY: I recommend APX, it costs more, yes, it does more, and it’s more reliable I give it 4.5/5 stars.
I worked with sales when I was younger, So I know most these negative reviews are from bitter people who sit in their homes all day waiting for a chance to be mean to someone at the door. Most these young men are honest trying to make money for college, to break the cycle of ignorance so many of us are a part of. Don’t ruin their job, BE INFORMED.
System is fine – dishonesty is not.
I was happy with the APX alarm system for about 4 hours after they installed the system, then I took a look at the reviews and the BBB rating and I decided to return the system.
I read most of the reviews and there were more negative reviews than I expected. There were warnings of scams, so I took a look at the contract I signed and found that I had been scammed. The salesmen told me that the fee per month was $44.99, when I took a look at the contract I saw that he had changed the second 4 to a 9 making it $49.99 a month. He said he was going to give me a deal and waive the $99.00 activation and installation fee, but I realized that he had crossed out the $99.00 on the contract and put a zero and had me initial it, but it was written in ink on my copy of the contract and probably wouldn’t be valid. I’m not sure yet if they charged my account $99.00, but I’m sure they will.
When I looked up the BBB report to find their rating was a C- and in my opinion that is too low, especially if I’m in a 42 month contract with the business. I was told that I could cancel the contract anytime, but when I looked in the folder I found the cancellation slip stating that you have 3 days to cancel your order.
I think the system is very nice and I wouldn’t have had a problem with the system if they hadn’t lied to me. I’m not happy with that and I would not recommend it to anyone.
I would rather myself, friends and family only deal with honest people.
Very good sales representative – honest and informed
I just purchased an APX alarm system from a young man doing door to door sales. Historically, I would not opt to buy anything from a door to door salesman. On his first contact he spoke with my wife, who told him I would have to be consulted/involved and could he return the following evening. Yes, he could, and yes he did.
I won’t re-iterate the sales pitch, you can read it re-told all over the place. I will say this about it, and this is MY opinion:
- The sales pitch and method is SMART.
- I am not home during the day, so coming in the evening is the ONLY time they could contact me directly.
- I hate telephone solicitations, deeming them invasive of my privacy, and respond to them accordingly. Paper flyers are more unlikely to be read by me. I want to be face to face.
- The salesman was well trained– No high pressure, no scare tactics, best of all, no exaggeration or hyperbole, just the facts about their system –both equpiment, monitoring, and cost.
- His sales pitch, identification representations made are the verified by telephone by YOU, the customer, with another company rep, who confirms that you have not been given any other representations than those the salesman is authorized, and required by the company obviously, to make. Also verified is that he told you what he is supposed to have told you.
- The young salesman did not know at the time that I am a lawyer of 28 years experience in contract law and litigation.
- I questioned him about parts of the contract and he demonstrated that he in fact knew what his company’s contract meant, what the terms were for, and wasn’t just making a rote pitch. Yes, the pitch contains a whole lot of “free” goodies to entice you to purchase. This however, is a very AMERICAN, marketing tactic because the US marketing culture has been developed such that (it is believed to be) best if the buyer thinks he is getting a good deal or a freebie in order to sell product. The reality however is, that nothing is free. SOMEBODY has to pay for this equipment or else the manufacturer and suppliers would go out of business very soon. They need to make a profit to stay in business. If you want your monitoring and/or equipment warranty to be of any value to you, you want this company to make money so that your service can continue. SO,you have to pay for what you get. The question really is, are the products and services what you want at a price you are willing to pay?
- I have had and used alarm systems at my places of business for years. They do not hold a candle to the APX system. It is SLICK, full featured and easy to use. Being wireless and utilizing cellular and internet technology, it is light years ahead of anything I have used before. Installation was immediate–same evening– and took about 2 hours. The installer’s work (and training of you, the buyer) was also verified over the telephone with another APX employee.
- The short evaluation of their sales system by me, appears to be that, because this electronic equipment can be mass produced so cheaply, effectively, your $200 installation fee probably pays the salesman and the installer; and your equipment cost is amortized over the contract term in the monthly monitoring fee. Because this stuff is electronic, for the most part the company’s downstream cost is really negligible, so it is VERY profitably for them. EXCELLENT — I want them to be around for the next 3 and 1/2 years to fulfill their end of the bargain!
- AFTER this was all done, I reviewed APX on the internet. YES, it looks like they have had some problems in the southern states a couple of years ago with salesman making misrepresentations. I can certainly say however that their present sales and service system is obviously designed to prevent that AT THE OUTSET. It is a VERY well designed sales/quality assurance/verification system.
- I’m impressed! There are some real brains behind this business model and in the result this company is going places.
- THE BOTTOM LINE– remember folks, you only get what you pay for; NOTHING IN THIS WORLD IS FREE. You should expect to pay a reasonable price for what you get.
- I am located in BC Canada. The quality of YOUR local state/provincial laws will affect the quality of the companies, their business systems and the people working for them accordingly.
Know how to deal with the sales pitch
I work in sales in an IT company. I’m not a technicial but I like to think that I know enough to be dangerous. APX came to my door right when I got of work today. I loathe door to door salesmen.
When I opened the door I was met by ****. Within 30 seconds I knew the game was on. The whole sign in the yard for the free equipment and yada yada yada. I’m not sure what compelled me to keep listening to him when I knew how I was being played. Maybe I was impressed that he seemed to be doing it so well. Seriously. He was knowledgable about the equipment and I think he did a fine job of giving me every detail of information I needed. I had been throwing around the idea for a security system for awhile so I thought what the hell. I won’t repeat the process since it was pretty much identical to what everyone else has wrote but he said the installer would be right over.
Ryan was a personable guy. Easy to talk to. He for sure was “selling me” but I do think he believed in what he was selling. John the installer came over and he was very efficient. It’s always slightly alkward when there is a stranger in your house working on something and you are just sitting there in the same room waiting for them to get done. John was really cool and actually initated conversations and gabbed while he was working. He showed me how everything works and I like what I see. I think I’ll be happy with APX.
Here is what I want to say to all of the complainers. You did not get scammed, you got SOLD. That is what salesmen do and it’s their job to do it. I agree wholeheartedly that there are some slimey salepeople out there conning people all day long. I don’t agree with that sort of thing but if a salesperson can come to my house, treat me with respect, install a system that is affordable then why should I complain about how he got the sale. There are GOOD people out there in sales positions that are just doing their job. It’s their job to make you believe in their product and buy it.
My advice would be read the contract, make sure the equipment is what you need and sign on the bottom line. You’re keeping the service, not the salesguy.
Glad to have listened to the sales pitch
I am a customer with Apx alarm, I’m not sure if this comment is going to be posted or not, my last review was not for some reason. (Note from Admin: If your review has not been posted, it is for one or more of the reasons specified on the review submission page).
I have read a lot of complaints and honestly I laugh at most of them. Many of the complaints are about how the sales rep swindled his way into the door and convinced them to buy a system on false pretenses. Let me explain my experience. On June 5th 2010 at 830pm an Apx rep knocked at my door. I was a little upset that it was so late, and told the rep that, he said this is usually the best time to catch people home and that they worked till nine. He went on to tell me about how phone lines are being cut on the old systems, and assured me that it would probably never happen in my nice neighborhood. I laughed and told him my neighborhood is not all that nice, and he went on to agree with saying that he has done research and knows most of the names in the neighborhood and of some of the issues, but went on to say that its none of his business to share those things with the neighbors. I commended him for not using scare tactics, and for knowing my name.
He went on to say how they were doing some advertising in the area for the new touch screen cellular keypad, and covering the $700 cost for a few people that were willing to put signs in there yards, and that he couldn’t give everyone a system for free. At this point he has caught my interest. By the time i agreed to get the system and the rep left, i looked on-line. I realized that I had been had! The reps tell everyone that there doing a few for free. At this point i had 2 choices I could be mad I was sold, or just keep the alarm systems which seemed to be a great system. I decided to keep the system, only because I know me, and honestly I would not have let the guy in my house unless he had made me feel special. Even if everyone can get this for free, I had to admit it was a good tactic only because i have had other alarm guys at my door and I always quickly shewed them away. So to me I wasn’t mad I had been sold such a great system even if I was made to feel special by the rep.
The main reason I am posting a review again is because I was recently broken into, and the police were at my home in an instance. You can look up the police report if you want, they caught the guy and thankfully my system worked, even after he had cut my phone line. Thank You Apx Sales Rep for Swindling me to listen to you a little longer, to understand that your system was so much better than the rest!
Company is helpful, glad to support the summer jobs
Last night an APX Salesman interrupted my wife’s cooking and my laziness after work one night and wanted to put a sign in my yard and give a free system and install to my wife and I. I have read a lot of reviews that bash their nice young college age kids that go door to door attempting to make a summer living sale/installing … nice kids from the area of UT. Problem… Not everything they say is exactly true! Beware! However you do have 3 days to cancel, but after speaking to their CSR dept. they attempt to do everything they can do to make it right! It is a great company and on the second day they have made all the promises needed for me to keep their system. We were in the market anyways. Top notch equipment, quick install, GREAT customer service, easy to use, and comparable to all the other company’s service for a home without a phone the monthly fee (44.99) is not far off target for privately operated company. At this point I am a happy APX customer and do feel my Home, Family and Puppies are safer with their system (providing they comeback and fix the issues they promised to!).
The service is definitely worth it
I want to add a bit of positive as most of these reviews that I’m reading are not. We had our system installed 8/2009. Just like so many others, yes the salesman came ot our door and used the same tactic, put a sign in the yard for advertising etc….your neighbors are jumping on the band wagon etc…We were thinking about an alarm so we listened and signed the contract.
Most are complaining they were offered free equipment but had to pay an activation fee and monthly fee…..get over it already people…You pay an activation fee when you bought your phone or upgrade and don’t complain about that…yes it’s higher but then alarms system is much more thne a phone yes??? Monthly fee, well come on, you are paying for a monitoring service…and let me tell you…I’ve had two false alarms and the police were there in minutes….worth the fee….and if you want to look at it another way…you are really just paying for the equipment over a period of time….so if you cancel…yes you have to pay a fee but then you are just paying off the equipment and it’s yours…it still works you just don’t have the monitoring service…but it still might be enough to scare off an intruder.
This year my son just bought a house and had APX installed with the touch panel and smoke detector..so yes for an additional amount, I’m upgrading to the touch screen and they are giving me 2 free smoke detectors, a solor light for my sign and including two new remote controls. I also had a faulty sensor, guess what…no hassel, they came and replaced it FREE… I’ve called to get help changing a password and again…no hassel…
I suppose if people want to think it’s a scam then nothing can change their mind but I’m a happy customer to date. In all honesty though, I do wonder what the cost of monitoring will be when my contract is up but again, I’m sure they will be willing to negotiate to keep me in the same pay range as I am… Taking my money out of my account automatically monthly was a bit unsettling but that was a chance but so far also proved to not be as worrisome as most are making it…
Ok, end of my review and I give APX a thumbs up…
