Seriously, pay more attention when signing a contract
Oh my god the whining!! From the customers who never bothered to read their contracts and the term 5 YEARS does appear several times on the contract in bold letters. What happened to entering into a contact in good faith. Those customers who ask all sorts of odd questions are the type of people who are always looking for an “out”. You write a check for 3 months of monitoring-oh and it is NOT $100 a month. It’s less than a $100 a quarter…Slomin’s sends in an highly trained installer in an expensive to operate van, filled with expensive equipment to install security in your home. And what has Slomin’s got for their work? $100 and the good faith that their bills will be paid! Liens??? A customer is asked for proof of ownership on the home to make sure that Slomin’s is not locking the rightful owner out of his own home. So stop whining and grow up you people and the guy with all the inside info on the family and how they do not own the business…check your sources.
Ghost alarm keeps going off
We had Slomins install our security system about 7 years ago. Due to no one in the house actually setting the alarm we decided to terminate our business with them once our contract reached it’s term. Here’s where the problem began. Whenever we had a power outage, usually due to storms…the alarm system would go off. Despite us ending the contract with Slomin, the alarm system would still work as an alarm system, without being hooked into a security network. Later we began having weird episodes with the system going off. We called Slomin and they would not help us deal with our situation. After all, we are no longer their customer. I’ve also recently tried to have someone from their office pay a service call, to dismantling the system, because we are now unable to stop the siren from going off, without it being provoked by a power outage. Slomin would not help, because we no longer have a contract with us. We are now stuck with our circuit breaker off in order to shut off the system. Unfortunately, we are also shutting off all the downstairs lights in the process. We are doing this until we get an electrician over to remedy our problem. Before anyone hires a security company, they need to find out what happens after they terminate their service with the company. Otherwise they can be listening to sirens going off three in the morning from their brief power outage. That was something that never occured in our mind to ask.
Not happy with Slomin’s
I am displeased with Slomin’s service, the person that signed me up on 8/11 or 12th informed me that I would be signing up for a 1 yr trial basis to see if I liked the system. Even though the contract stated 5 yrs and he marked all this equipment that I needed to have installed in my house, however, the equipment was already in my house when I purchased it.
The technician came out and installed a wire in my bathroom downstairs, my sliding door (which was the wrong one) and put a box in my coat closet, removed my coats laid them on the floor and left them there, plus plugged something in my laundry room socket. However, he claims it took hours to install equipment that was already there. This clearly makes this contract invalid due to false information on my contract installation. The technician had a nerve to ask for another check for 131.47 which had already been cashed. These things were not done so this contract is (voided) and I feel I should not be binded to a falsified contract.
The system went off on 8/20, 21 and 22 and police was dispatched for nothing and I am sure I will be sent a bill if this continues to dispatch policeman and there is not a problem. Another technician had to come out 8/23 to correct the problem, he stated the wrong wiring was put on my sliding door and he put a nail in the door to make it connect to the signal but did not change the wiring to the correct one. This second technician fixed the problem yet on 8/31 I disarmed the alarm system and the #5 was on the key pad and no one was upstairs. Lastly, I just received a bill for the amount of 131.47 yet the bill states I only paid 23.86 which is incorrect I wrote a check for 131.47 and it was cashed. When I called to find out what was going on Patrick informed me that he did not know why the #5 was on the key pad, it could have been a bug or something plus he was rude. So I asked to cancel the plan and he told me it would be 1700 dollars to cancel and I will get me a lawyer first before I give Slomin’s 1700 dollars for poor service that I am not pleased with. How can this be possible and I only had the system for 2 weeks he claimed you all have to pay the technician for his many hours of work. He was not working all hours he reported so that was falsified as well.
So I asked to speak with a supervisor and talked with ***** which told me the same information, so I asked for the corporate office stating there has to be something in this contract that protects the customers otherwise this is just a money issue with this company and I know don’t any customers renew their contracts because of this. ***** told me I was contacting the corporate office based out of NY and there is no way I can get out of this contract. Yes there has to be away and I hope you all will assist me with this because I am unpleased with the entire process from beginning to now. So I am asking can someone have a heart and let me out of this contract. I am not a happy customer and very displeased with this process. This system has me nervous wreck and a prisoner in my own house. If I move too much the alarm goes off it’s unreal.
Stay away from Slomin’s
Do not choose Slomin’s! They are a rip-off and don’t fall for thier false advertising. When you have a problem, they are not there to help. I have been paying ~$90 per month for about fifteen years and the company still wants to charge me $1200 to discontinue service since they insist that the damage to their system is result of some sort of electrical storm (although I’ve had no other problems with electrical in my home). They insisted that I needed to upgrade the system and sign a new agreement. The “new” system that I signed on for is just as worthless as the old one. That was the mistake I made with this company. When you have faulty equipment installed in your home, it can be really annoying. The new system alarm sounds beeped for no reason and so most of the time I could not use it so most of the time I left it off. The maintenance agreement is a the scam here–they will make you pay for the defective parts and continue to expect you to pay for monitoring service even if it doesn’t work. Defects in the system or the way the installer put it in caused problematic/annoying beeping that was no result of an intrusion.
Old alarm won’t stop going off
I’ve had a reasonable relationship with Slomins, but deactivated the system after losing my job and fulfilling my contract requirements. The other night at 4:30AM, the alarm went off and we were able to silence it. The outside strobe is still flashing and I can’t get Slomins to explain how to turn it off. Their reply was to look in our owners manual which we don’t have. I can’t find a manual and they won’t explain how to turn the strobe off unless we sign a new contract. Can anyone out there help please.
Slomins will not keep you safe
Do not use Slomins Shield if you actually want security!! I’m locked into a 3yr contract with a company who failed at least 3times to call me when alarm was activated. (and I mean alarm goes off for at least 3minutes-they require 30-60sec) I had the alarm installed because my ex is prime suspect for muti murders, I fear for my life, not from burglars!….how safe do I feel when my alarm company FAILS to do their job?! When I call & complain they say “we sent a test signal and all is fine” guess it’s all a figment of my imagination!
Slomins salesmen are liars
Slomin’s salemen lie about the 5 year clause in their contract! When you ask what if you move or die are you responsible for the rest of the contract they tell you no problem just give them the name of the new owners by certified mail. Not so! They send you bills, then they get a collection attorney to get a summary judgement against you. Do not sign any contract with Slomin Security, you will not even get an opportunity to to go to court and have your case heard. New Jersey.
They are not free, way too expensive
Do not choose Slomin’s! They advertise FREE security system with a five year contract but it’s not free. I have been paying $100 per month for two and a half years and the company still wants to charge me $1100 to discontinue service since unforeseen and unfortunate circumstances have caused us to have to move. They told me that the situation does not matter and they need the $1100 (or $595 settlement fee) to cover the cost of the equipment that does not even work. The alarm sounds for no reason and causes the police to show up and have us drop whatever we are doing to rush home for no reason. The first time they attemped to fix the problem, they found nothing wrong with it. The second time they came to fix the problem, they said they fixed it but they didn’t because it’s still malfunctioning. The police then tell us that if they come by one more time for a false alarm, we will be fined. And now Slomin’s wants us “to cover the cost of the equipment”.
Slomin’s has not resolved the issue.
Company is a big ripoff
Slomin’s is one big rip off from the sales representative to the customer service. I have never dealt with a company like this that gives out so much misinformation, they have you pay for a service and cash your check even before they’ve made an appointment, then they finally give you an appointment that nobody shows up to or even call you about. The company doesn’t have a clue as to what they are doing. They had me pay for a permit to do the work and they refused to give me a refund for a job that they never did, and then tell me that I’ll have to go back to the permit company for a refund even though their sales rep had me go and get it in the first place. I would never ever recommend this company to anyone. They are terrible and so are their customer service reps and their sale representatives. To all out there beware of Slomin’s. Very very unsatisfied customer.
(Added June 1/10) Read the fine print. Free installation means you are stuck w/them for several years – making monthly payments. Whole house alarms are not easy/convenient to use. If you have a big home w/several occupants coming and going – things like kids coming home late, people walking around at nite trip motion sensors when raiding the fridge or going potty etc. They are truly more trouble than they are worth. While alarms systems may give peace of mind in practiccal terms, not sure how much they really protect you. After 5 long years – we were finally able to terminate contract! Now, the alarm constantly trips and they will not speak to us or help us AT ALL because we are no longer a customer! I told them its their equip – just tell us how to turn it off. I may as well have been asking for a refund – NO CHANCE. Just bad business. We won’t do business w/them again and would not recommend them. Save your money – get a dog!
Slomins are the absolute best
So I read and read and read all of the negative (comments) on Slomin’s Shield and say to myself “why? why O why O why?”. Has any one ever worked with these guys? Let me tell you something, this is a class A organization. These guys do everything in house and when I mean in house I mean in house. Alarms are installed by Slomin’s Shield techs and thei vp ***** is a 25 yr plus vet. They are family owned for like 100 yrs. They hire their own salespeople, train them send them out to custom design an alarm to your home. I worked with them in the Philadelphia market several years ago on their media buy and got to know these guys 1st hand. They protect my home and they should be your 1st choice in home security. A++ slomins.
Service is always top notch
Do Your Research! Slomins is the best. Their sales people are the most knowledgeable. They don’t say what you just want to hear. They are honest! The service technicians are professional. There are no gimmicks. I am renewing my contract for another 5-years, and as a result, Slomins is giving me a free upgrade, which includes doing 6 bedroom windows and remotes For free! Whenever I have called in the past, their customer service is so helpful. When I needed a service call, they arrived promptly and did what needed to be done!
Zero confidence in Slomin’s
It’s been almost 6 months since I signed up with Slomin’s and paid for a radio freq transmitter (I don’t have a land line). I’m still waiting to receive the transmitter. They’ve scheduled and cancelled multiple times saying its on back order. If this is how they’re handling installation then I have no confidence in their monitoring. Take your business elsewhere.
Great deal on 5 year contract
Slomins is A++. Gave me a free system and installation, (the charge is) $25.15/month for police being called. Did everything online and was installed in 2 days. Contract is for 5 yrs but they really are a good deal.
Slomins is worse than useless
We have had Slomins now for two years on our new home. I do not even want to talk about the craziness that went on with our oil contract. This company is a bunch of B.S. artists. Now onto the Alarm system…we have had it for two years and have had nothing but trouble with the (motion) sensor inside the house. We cannot even set it because of our cats. They said there is a pet friendly zone. That is bull****. Everytime I ask to get someone to come to the house to fix it they say it will be 98.00 for a call. I am not paying this freaking money anymore. They come and nothing gets fixed…More problems. You think they would be apologetic but no. Our oil contract is cancelled with them and when the 5 years is up so will our alarm company. They are a bunch of scam artists who just want your money and they do not care that the economy is struggling. Do not go with this company. Slomins does not care about the everyday person just the money in their pocket.
Shame on Slomin’s
I sold my house and moved to another state that is not serviced by Slomin’s. I provided the name of the new owners, sent a letter registered to cancel the account, after all they are supplying security at a house with a new owner and… am now being harassed for $945.00 termination fee. This company needs to be investigated for unethical practices! I filed a complaint with the BBB and feel they should be investigated by the New York attorney general because they are perpatrating a scam, as once they are in the door you can’t get rid of them. SHAME ON YOU SLOMIN’S. I’m not playing!
NOT happy with Slomin’s
When I originally moved into my house in Brick, NJ, It was set up with a Slomin’s security system. I decided to activate it and called Slomin’s who sent a salesman out to talk with us. He explained that we had most of the equipment, but added that we should have a security panel (i.e. keypad) in the bedroom and three key chain alarm switches. I also told me it would be a two-year contract and that the extra equipment was part of the contract quarterly payments. I recently acquired about monitoring without a home phone line since we are not using it, we use cell phones now only. I was told that the system doesn’t work without a land line and I would still have to make payments. I also found out it is a 5-year contract and that canceling it would cost more then the five years of payments. I am VERY upset with the conflictions of what I was told by their salesman and what the actual contract was. I was lied too, and I feel this was intentional and part of a deceiving sales pitch. The only positive relation I have had with this company was the technician who set up the bedroom keypad and showed us how to use the system.
Absurd penalty for moving
I signed a 5 year contract, but moved 3-1/2 years into it. I moved within the Slomins monitoring area and requested that they just change the number on my acct. and continue the current contract. They want to charge me a ridiculous fee and sign on for another 5 years. Or cancel the contract for $800. In this economy they can afford to just lose customers like that? Terrible customer service! Stay away from Slomins!!!
Not so sure about Slomins
I can’t wait to get rid of Slomins alarm system. The d*** alarm has been going off every half hour since Friday night. A call to the company is useless. They keep telling me that their technicians don’t work on weekends! We have to wait until Tuesday. They did let slip that if I had a previously scheduled appt. for Saturday someone would come. But since that is not the case no one is available. What kind of company is this? They are supposed to provide service 24/7. This was the little detail that they hid during their sales pitch. The only service that Slomins did offer was a walkthrough. I should get a Philips screwdriver and power down the system. How helpful. You have been forwarned.
The problem was resolved. However, this incident shows a real defect in customer service. Fortunately, I was able to disable the alarm until help came. Customers should get immediate service, not a wait over a long weekend. We will carefully review if we want to keep this service.
Slomin’s has done a good job
I’ve had this system for 6 months and must say I am impressed.
The salesman was curtious, patient, and did not pressure us at all. The installer was prompt, knowledgeable and honest. The system’s keypad and siren are hardwired to a hidden control panel. The window and door sensors are not hardwired which to me is a relief. Hardwiring window and door sensors would have made such an unbearable mess! The only concern that I have is that my phone lines (coaxial cable) are easily accessable from the side of the house. A burglar just has to cut them to keep the system from sending a signal to the central monitoring station. The alarm does sound, but thats it. I need to secure (and hide) those cable wires better.
The system does not cost me anything upfront, but I did have to pay for an extra window sensor and two remote controls for the alarm. Good thing is that all I had to do is grease the palms of a alarm installer I know from the neighborhood and got the extra sensor and two remotes for under $100.00….God bless America! (Slomins wanted $450.00!) He also makes service calls for $20.00!(Slomins wants $80.00 to send one of their techs over).
The system does deter. I am in law enforcement and can say that most confirmed burglaries take place in homes with poor doorlocks (and old doors/windows) and homes without activated home security systems. Unless you live in a secluded multimillion dollar mansion like the one out in Long Island, chances are the burglar won’t waste his time… especially in the Cities where most burglars are crackheads looking for a fix or unemployed day laborers looking for a quick and easy score.
Pair up your Slomins system with a good doorlock like Multilock or Medeco and you in good shape.
Slomins will LIE to you
Slomins is one lie after another. Slomins is not family owned. Slomins is owned by investors and is ran by a guy with a different last name because he married into it. Then the other management is a bunch of his pals that have zero knowledge or experience in the industry. The guy that said they have legit management is an idiot. I have had experiences with all the Slomins offices and I know this for a fact. Nobody cares about anything except for you to sign the contract. Then they don’t care because they will sue you.
SLOMINS supposedly works on a VOIP LINE????? SLOMINS IS CUTTING EDGE????!?!??!?!??! This is the same napco system that you could buy 20 years ago. The voip stipulations are stated in the contract. You lose power or internet and your system is gone!!! Most of Slomins management doesn’t even have Slomins. Most of their salesman don’t either. They offer no deals for employees and all of this just makes sense- IT IS A BOGUS DEAL. Yes slomins does a lot of business but they go after the lower income people and offer low credit scores. The only they care about is getting someone to sign a contract. ANYONE THAT SAYS ANYTHING DIFFERENT DOES NOT HAVE A CLUE. I am sitting here looking at changing my filter on furnace and to do this every couple months I have to take down the el cheapo siren from Slomins because the donkey tech put it directly under the vent door. All of my wiring in my garage is down the wall they didn’t even snake the drywall so it is all eye sores. Not to mention anyone that every comes to my house can easily see where the power plug and everything is. THIS IS PATHETIC WORKMANSHIP and they get away with it because management can’t directly talk to the techs because they are union.
So get this, I know a guy in DC who had a slomins system and someone kicked his door in and ripped the key pad off the wall. NOTHING HAPPENED. His home was robbed and Slomins Shield said the only thing they can do is sell him a new keypad so he can fulfill his contract. The system is old school. If you spend a couple thousand dollars with slomins and get the updated new stuff and then you had someone else install it other than their techs you might be alright- but then why do thru slomins for that? You have a 5 year contract still??? That will put a lien on your home. Here is the deal. It is 2009- If any of you have a little bit of common sense you will shop around. I can personally name 4 companies off the top of my head from experience that are better. I won’t because I am not pitching for anyone- I am simply telling you that you would be better off getting robbed than going with SLOMINS SHIELD.
Avoid the same mistake
We have had a very bad experience with Slomins.
A technician came to install the security system. He was in my home for over 8 hours, and he spent much of that time on the phone, taking breaks, or using the bathroom. When he finished, the equipment did not operate properly. He drilled holes in my hardwood floors and walls without asking my permission, and worst of all, he did not want to go through the effort of putting the hardwired fire detector on the first or second floor, so he put it up under the basement steps. When we complained, the company sent another technician to install the fire detector properly, which was good.
The system continually went off without provocation. So, in the middle of the night, they system would go off, waking us up… it would go off when we weren’t home and the police were sent to our home. This made it inconvenient and too much trouble to use. After Slomins was unable to correct this problem, we stopped activating the system.
We attempted to cancel the contract, but like other people on this site, we were told we’d have to pay something like $2000 for the “free” equipment we were given. Right now, we are literally paying a monthly fee on a system that we don’t use to ride out the contract. It’s a complete waste of money.
We were new homeowners when we signed the contract, but now I know better.
Slomins is just terrible
Do not buy Slomins. It is impossible to cancel once you have met your contract terms. They send you to their “cancellation department” which ironically has no direct dial and never answers the phone. Once you do get thru to someone, they require “their form” to cancel, which of course they don’t send out for weeks. When I mailed in their cancellation form they said they never received it and have continued billing me, despite the fact that I am owed a refund. Slomins is a typical scam of a company; you’ve been warned.
I researched this company on the internet and found they had numerous complaints with the Better Business Bureau. I too filed a complaint with the BBB and, thru the use of one of their mediators, was able to resolve this matter to my satisfaction. My distrust of this company remains and I do not think I would have seen any resolution but for this company not wanting any further complaints to be lodged and remain unresolved with the BBB.
Beware of Slomin’s
Slomin’s is the worst alarm company I have encountered. 5 year contracts that cost more to cancel than to live out the life of the contract. BUYER BEWARE!!! Customer Service told me I could cancel on Jan. 2, 2009 (a few years back) so I just called and they said that I can’t cancel without paying over $800. They say it’s due to the free equipment they installed. Free? I had a sizable bill after they finished installation. PLEASE people read the contract before going with Slomin’s. I don’t even live in this house anymore and I have to provide alarm service for my tenants or pay this ridiculous cancelation fee.
Still paying for an alarm I don’t want.
Slomin’s seems to be the best around
I just signed the 5 year contract with Slomin’s.
My wife and I researched ADT and Brinks along with Slomin’s. We had all three company’s to our house to hear the pitch (all were from their respective corporate company’s and not 3rd party vendors). We were fortunate, all three sales people were pleasant, attentive, and far from pushy (as many have complained about here). All three also knew there product, however, most did not know what their own contract read in the details. Thanks to this site and other avenues we were able to ask questions and follow it up with a line-by-line review of the contracts.
It was in our best interest to choose Slomin’s for our home but what it comes down to is READ THE CONTRACT. In any business, a signed contract is the final legal say, regardless of a sales promise. You need to weigh the pluses and minuses and decide what best fits your situation.
I may in the future have an issue with Slomin’s and will write back to inform the readers, but, for now we are happy with our decision.
Don’t just badmouth Slomin’s
Some of these reviews are ridiculous! First of all, Fact:Slomin’s IS family owned, and has been since 1923!! Fact: the equipment used by Slomins is cutting edge and up to all industry standards. Fact: Slomin’s employees are thoroughly trained and experienced in all aspects of their jobs. Ive had a slomins system for 12 years and have never had a single problem. Installation was neat and clean, service extremely efficient and their customer service is extraordinary!
