SimpliSafe vs. Frontpoint: Home Security Comparison

Today, the home security landscape is remarkably different than it was just a few years ago. While security systems requiring professional installation are still around, the market is no longer theirs alone. Innovative companies like SimpliSafe and Frontpoint revolutionized the approach to home security by offering homeowners simple-to-setup, completely wireless home security systems that deliver the same level of protection as traditional systems.

Entering the home security space at similar times, the two have emerged as self-install market leaders and two of the most popular brands in home security today. That’s where their similarities end.

SimpliSafe Security

Dissatisfied with the options available to consumers, a Harvard Business School student founded SimpliSafe as an alternative to the prevalent home security model of hard wired systems and long term contracts.

With their own technology and proprietary equipment, SimpliSafe delivers an affordable, no-contract security solution to meet the expectations of more tech-savvy consumers unwilling to tie themselves into long-term financial commitments or systems with out-dated technology.

Frontpoint Security

Founded by three security industry experts who recognized the growing trend in emerging technologies and existing security companies’ failure – or refusal – to leverage these technologies and strong customer service to provide safer, more secure and flexible solution for homeowners.

Using a best-of-breed approach, Frontpoint developed strategic partnerships with the highest quality equipment manufacturer, software platform and monitoring service providers and integrated them into one single home security ecosystem. They then backed this with a mission of providing industry leading customer service and support.

Again, both companies have become leaders in the industry, but have vastly different approaches. Let’s look at some of the differences between them to see who delivers a better solution for today’s homeowner.

Key Differences: Frontpoint vs. SimpliSafe

Contracts

SimpliSafe offers consumers an affordable, no contract home security system. Consumers pay up-front for their home security system and then can add monitoring on a month-to-month basis. More traditionally, Frontpoint requires a standard 36-month contract and discounts their equipment steeply so consumers up-front cost can be minimized at the start of their home protection.

To look at it another way, SimpliSafe’s business model is based on transactions with their customers. Up-front purchase, month-by-month fee. Simple. Inexpensive. A take-it-then-leave-it approach to home security. Frontpoint’s business is based on establishing a positive, long-term relationship with their customers. They steeply discount their equipment, incurring cost to provide the system to the customer at a discount. Over the lifespan of the service contract, Frontpoint slowly recoups their initial costs, so they must maintain positive, long-term relationships with their customers in order to keep a profitable business.

When it comes to the security of your home and loved ones, what type of provider would you want? One that’s collected their money up-front and considers the monthly service fee extra gravy or one that’s committed to providing you service for many years and is invested in the relationship and your satisfaction?

Trial Period

SimpliSafe offers a 60-day warranty. That’s double what Frontpoint offers as a risk-free trial. But do you really need more than thirty days to evaluate the system? No. And SimpliSafe knows this. By extending the free return “deadline”, SimpliSafe makes returning the system a lower priority for consumers and that means fewer returns. Frontpoint’s 30-day policy is in place because they want you to activate, test and evaluate their system and service immediately. Again, they’re committed to your long-term satisfaction.

Technology & Platform

With completely different approaches, SimpliSafe has taken on the significant task to develop their own equipment while Frontpoint works with leading equipment providers, which affords them to offer an expansive and comprehensive security system which includes options like video cameras, touchscreen control panels and their newly released image sensor. Frontpoints partnership with Alarm.com also allows the system to integrate with 3rd party smart home devices like AppleTV and Amazon Echo (LINK)

SimpliSafe is still working to release their first video camera, which they were hoping to release last year. Recently, a security flaw in SimpliSafe’s wireless communication was discovered which they are unable to fix with their existing hardware.

Monitoring Fees & Service

SimpliSafe offers lower monthly monitoring fees than Frontpoint – that’s undisputable. But when you look at the level of monitoring service and capabilities, Frontpoint out-delivers. Frontpoint includes crash and smash protection keeping you safe even if the panel is smashed. Simplisafes system is susceptible to being disabled if the intruder finds the base station.

Frontpoint allows for multiple user access codes to track who is coming and going, support for automation, and additional 3rd party Zwave equipment, geo services and event triggers which can automate your system to, for example, turn on a light when the motion sensor is triggered.

Comparison Break Down

Company Reputation

Winner: Frontpoint Security

As we’ve discussed previously, Frontpoint’s business success depends on their ability to deliver a positive experience and maintain long-term relationships with their customers. By doing so, they’ve not grown into one of the largest wireless home security providers in the country. With a near-decade long track record of proven commitment to their customers and thousands of positive reviews and testimonials, Frontpoint is nearly untouchable when it comes to reputation.

Pricing

Winner: SimpliSafe

If we ignore everything else and look only at price point, SimpliSafe wins hands down. For some consumers, price may be the only real factor in their decisions, in which case SimpliSafe may be the best fit. For others, where price is a consideration but not the sole factor, Frontpoint remains our top recommendation.

Service

Winner: Frontpoint

Frontpoint long ago claimed their stake at the top of the industry when it comes to customer service and attention. By making customer satisfaction a core focus of their business, Frontpoint has been able to sustain significant growth over the past few years and maintain their reputation as a leader in maintaining long term positive relationships with their customers.

Ease of Installation

Winner: Frontpoint

One of the the closes categories when comparing these companies. Both offer simple to setup wireless security systems. However, the category goes to Frontpoint as they also lead when it comes to customer service and support and place a tremendous amount of internal resources to making the entire process of securing the home as easy as possible for the homeowner – from configuring the equipment package to activation.

Security Equipment & Technology

Winner: Frontpoint

This category highlights the difference between a company formed by a technology team versus one founded by home security industry veterans. Both offer wireless security solutions, but Frontpoint’s best-of-breed approach gives them a significant advantage over competitors like SimpliSafe that rely on their own ability to develop and release new equipment. Frontpoint’s system supports home automation and integrations with 3rd party smart home devices. SimpliSafe is still working to release a video solution and is dealing with negative press related to an unfixable security flaw.

Warranty

Winner: Draw

Both companies offer a three year warranty for their equipment. While the warranties are the same Frontpoint’s covers some equipment SimpliSafe doesn’t even offer, like video cameras, and image sensors. Additionally, we’ve heard that Frontpoint will often warranty equipment outside of the 3 year period to keep customers happy. This isn’t a publicly written policy though so we must call this section a draw.

The Overall Winner: Frontpoint

While we can appreciate SimpliSafe for their intent in offering consumers an inexpensive wireless home security system, the company’s decision to develop their own product line has significantly hindered their ability to keep pace with Frontpoint.

From the beginning, Frontpoint has focused on delivering at the highest level when it comes to their customers’ experience. And by doing so and leveraging the expertise of their partners like GE, QolSys and Alarm.com, they’ve been able to succeed in developing a home security platform that provides a stable infrastructure for future innovations, ensuring their ability to continue to deliver a positive experience for their current customers and meet the evolving needs of their customers in the future.
