The 15 Safest Places to Live in Virginia, 2016

About the State of Virginia

Virginia is for lovers of many different things. From those who enjoy trekking along the Appalachian trail and hiking the Blue Ridge Mountains and camping in the Shenandoah Valley to those that prefer the miles of beaches along Virginia’s coast to American History buffs and everything in between, Virginia has something to offer everyone. The “gateway to the South” is located midway between New York and Florida and bordered by Washington D.C. and Maryland to the north and North Carolina and Tennessee to the south. Considered the “mother of presidents”, eight U.S. Presidents were born in the state, including George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and James Madison.

Firmly stitched into the fabric of our great nation’s history, Virginia has become an essential hub to our future. Dubbed the “Internet Capital” by Wired magazine in 1999, it’s estimated that more than half of all Internet traffic flows through data centers located in Northern Virginia.

Historic, immersed in technology and with both metropolitan and rural communities, Virginia ranks as the 2nd Safest Place to Live in the U.S. These are the 15 safest places to live in Virginia.

How We Picked the Safest Places to Live in Virginia

We used the latest complete statistics from the FBI’s Uniform Crime Report as well as other verified data sources and narrowed our focus to towns and cities with a minimum of 2,500 residents. We compared the numbers of reported crimes – both violent and property – to determine the overall total of reported crimes for each location. We then calculated the rate of crimes to occur in a locale for every 1,000 residents to identify the safest places to live in Virginia.

If you’re a resident in Virginia and don’t see your town in our top fifteen, it may be because we were unable to find enough verifiable information to include in our assessments. Not every local law enforcement agency may have reported their statistics to the FBI and, as such, AlarmSystemReviews.com would not be able to include your town in this year’s ranking.
