30 Safest Places To Live In New York – 2016

We analyzed FBI data to bring you The 30 Safest Places to Live in New York for 2016. Did your city rank as one of the safest in the Empire State?

About the State of New York

The fourth most populated state in the country, New York is also the seventh-most densely populated thanks in no small part to New York City. The city so nice they had to name it twice, New York City (or the Big Apple as it’s also known) is the most populous city in the United States. Considered a global city, it is home to the Statue of Liberty, the United Nations headquarters and is often referred to as the cultural and financial capital of the world.

While the Big Apple may cast a large shadow over the state of New York as a whole, we were more impressed to see that the state – despite being so densely populated – ranked 16th on the Safest Places to Live in the United States list for 2016.

To learn more about the cities, villages, and towns that helped the Empire State rank so remarkably high on our annual list, we looked at the data to identify the safest communities. Below are the 30 safest places to live in New York.

How We Pick the Safest Places to Live

Utilizing data from several national sources including the most recent FBI Uniform Crime Report, our research team compiled and established safety profiles for every reported community in the state of New York. Limiting their findings to those cities and towns with at least 2,500 residents. They totaled the number of violent and property crimes and calculated that total against the reported population to assign an overall crime rate per 1,000 residents. Communities with incomplete data were also excluded from the final rankings.
