30 Safest Places To Live In Maine – 2016

Maine ranked as the 7th Safest State in the US. See what towns and cities are it's safest.

About the State of Maine

The northernmost state in the country, Maine or Vacationland as it’s also known, is also considered the easternmost state in the contiguous United States. One of the smaller and least populated states, Maine’s only shared American border is with New Hampshire. To the east and north, it is bordered by the Canadian provinces of New Brunswick and Quebec. While the state is known for its coastline, rolling mountains and densely forested interior, it is most famous for its seafood – most specifically, its clams and lobster which are sold all over the world.

In 2016, our researchers placed Maine as the 7thSafest Place to Live In The United States for 2016. To get a better understanding of the Pine Tree State, we looked at the towns and communities of Maine to determine which ones were the safest places to live and contributed to Maine’s overall high safety rating.

How We Pick the Safest Places to Live

Compiling and analyzing data from several data sources including the latest crime statistics as reported by the FBI in their annual Uniform Crime Report, our research team established ranking criteria to determine the safest places to live in the United States. The team looked at the total number of both violent and property crimes compared to the total population to calculate an overall crime rate based on a population of 1,000 residents. They then narrowed their ranking to include only those cities and towns with complete data reported and a population minimum of 2,500 residents. Our rankings only include cities and towns that meet our criteria. It is possible that there are cities or towns with lower crime statistics, but we could not include them in our final rankings.
