Protect America was no help
Protect America sucks! Customer service sucks!
Costs you $150.00 for a technician to come out to fix their own problem. I had a “communication failure” message and called them and was on the phone with them for over an hour, running around trying to find a telephone extension, opening up the panel, unplugging this and that and they couldn’t even solve anything. I had to call them twice!! The first time after unplugging my phone for them to test the communication, they never called me back. After a week, they didn’t even do a follow up to see if I got it to work or not? What happens if my house was on fire or my house was burglarized during this week?!
After not hearing from them I had to call again and they walked me through the same **** and it didn’t work again so I said get a tech out here and they said if a tech comes out they will charge me $150. They wanted a pregnant woman to climb up to the attic to check on how they wired their own system! So now, I am paying for an alarm that doesn’t work, cause canceling would cost me $598!!!
I hope to God nothing happens to my family during this contract!!! I will definitely cancel my contract with Protect America when it’s over!
3 Month Update:
They still suck. I had to fix it by myself. I had to climb up the attick to find out where they installed the telephone line and found out it was cut so I basically had to go out and purchase a new phone line and replaced the severed one. I will not be renewing my contract with Protect America again once it has expired. They never called back or do any follow-ups after my initial complaint.
Loyal customers unimpressed by Protect America’s services
My husband and I began this began our service with Protect America because my car had been recently broken into and my purse was stolen from it.
My husband leaves for work at 4am and I have a 2 year old and a 2 month; needless to say I wanted a way to feel more secure. We started our service and the first time it was experimented on (by my 2 year old who decided to hit the panic button) I recieved a phone call about five minutes later and the cops showed up about 25 minutes after that. Needless to say that if there were actual cause for panic, the reaction time was not impressive.
Also recently, my husband and I are recently unable to use them system due to relocation arrangements. I Called PA to see if it would be at all possible to defer payments for a year until we were living somewhere where the system was f use to us again and “no,” has been the response across the board. I understand wanting to cancell a policy eing unacceptable, but a deferment? Come on… It’s just good business. My husband and I most likely would have enhanced our service and purchased a larger package in about a year, but if they can’t be more acommodating to their (loyal, on time) paying customers I think they are going to lose out in the end. I wish I would have found this site before I just signed up, but live and learn.
My next service– since I WILL NOT stay with PA– I’ll do more research on first.
Read the rules carefully
Read the contract closely. If, after the initial 3 year contract period, you want to cancel the service the contract stipulates that you must submit a written cancellation notice at least 60 days in advance of the annual renewal date or else the contract is automatically renewed for another year, and you have to pay for the whole year whether you use the service or not. This reflects what others have said about this company. Suggest contacting the Federal Consumer Commission (877-382-4357), Better Business Bureau, and/or local consumer protection offices to file your complaints. Good luck!!
No problems here
I was looking at the reviews on this site as well as some other sites and noticed that people only take the time to post comments about a company if they have something go really bad or if something really good happens. I don’t have a really bad or a really good story. I just have a simple observation. I don’t know if Protect America is the best security company on the planet or not, I have nothing to compare them to. This is my first alarm system. But, I can say that I that I received everything that I expected and the system seems to be working just fine.
Be very careful about when you send a letter of cancellation
Unethical company. Will not let me out of my contract with 45 day lead time from the renewal point. I moved and do not need the service anymore, this is after the 3 year initial contract. The rip the customer off by requiring a written letter 60 days before the renewal date, even though you committed to the 3 years. They are not for the customer, but for themselves.
Protect America makes you finally feel safe in your own home
My house was broken into in April 08 and I immediately put in a system with Protect America. I think the system works great. I never had any problems and right now I am asking them to ship 4 more window sensors. I called them today and I was on hold for only a few minutes, but that happens any time you are contacting a company. I have added additional sensors to my unit since April and every time the technician will walk me through installing them over the phone. Its so easy. I noticed all the bad reviews here are about getting out of the contract. I will probably never cancel my contract with them. Finally, I can sleep at night or take a shower in peace. I finally feel safe.
This company has ZERO customer service
Don’t sign up with this company. Very bad customer service! Very hard to deal with and the hold time on the phone just to get to an agent to ask questions is over the top. Just all around bad customer service. Customer service is key to having a good set up, but this company could not offer that at all!
System NEVER worked the way it should
Please don’t use this company! My equipment never worked correctly, customer service was terrible, and I got caught by their 60 day deadline for cancellation. So, after I paid 3 years for a service that didn’t work, I missed the deadline and now have to pay for another year of service that doesn’t work.
Expected more from Protect America
Terrible service, terrible customer service.
The monitoring station was OK but the sensors that stick to the doors and windows all eventually fell off more than once after being stuck back and eventually I gave up.
Also I dropped off the radar and was not being monitored for a LONG time… yes, due to a phone/internet error – but they will not know, dont care, as long as they are getting their money every month. Yes, they do state that you have to check it every week, and they mean it, which means you have to run around opening doors, windows, etc. every week which I dont have time for. I guess I expected better.
BEWARE! If you sign a contract, be sure to read the fine print! They have an automatic renewal of one year AFTER you have filled your initial agreement. They automatically renew your contract withOUT written notification and it is binding. They require a written letter of cancellation, which is understandable for protection, if you do NOT send this written letter in time, they automatically renew for another year and will NOT let0 you out of the contract!
BAD, desperate business practice. I understand breach of contract but I more than fulfilled my original contact – this is deceiving business practices.
Very unhappy dissatisfied with Protect America. I am looking into legal options and plan to fight this.
Communicating with Protect America was extremely frustrating
I cancelled my contract with Protect America by letter in March 2008 as requested by the company. I never received a bill but imagine my surprise when I found out that they sent me to a Collection Agency in May 2008. I tried to get it off of my credit report but they would not remove it.
When I called **** at Protect America she said they never received my letter and could I fax them a copy, which I did right away. Today, August 11, 2008, I receive a bill from them for July & August 2008. We have moved and have not had their service since March 2008. I called them and spoke with ******. She said they have no record of my cancelling my account. She said I will have to re-fax everything. I asked to speak to ****. I was told she is no longer there. I was transferred to a supervisor named, *****. ***** said there is no record of my cancelling and that I would have to re-send my letter or pay the bill. I refused to do either one. Rudely, she said “That is your decision but the bill will still stand.”
She than had the brilliant idea to check my “paper” file. She found the letter and stated that she will reverse the charge and make sure the account is closed. I hope to never hear from them again but I won’t be surprised if I do.
Protect America is equal to or better than any other system
I am very happy with the service and the equipment I received from Protect America. I saved money (got the free system), and only pay for monitoring, and the alarm system is as good (if not better) as any other system I have had in the past. Thank You PA.
Protect America tries to trick you – just lost a good customer
Protect America has hidden contract clauses that are misleading.
I have two Protect America systems in two separate homes. One home is a rental property to which according to Protect America that I have had for over three years. My current tenents in this home use their cell phones. I attempted to disconnect this service due to no use–and was informed by several representives, Jessica and Bradley that my policy automatically renewed itself after three years due to my failure to notify them 60 days prior to policy expiration. Therefore I must wait until the year completion to cancel policy. After getting no where I decided to cancel both my policies giving then more than enough notice.
Ultimately it is their loss of a good customer.
Unsatisfied from the start
We started our service with Protect America on September 2, 2005 and had nothing but problems from the start. Sensors constantly had to be replaced, communication error messages have to be cancelled at least once or twice a month, and we’ve been completely dissatisfied with Protect America.
We were so unhappy with Protect America’s product and grew so tired of constantly having to deal with this inferior product that we tried to cancel our service in January of 2006. We were told then that we had to wait the full 3 year contract term to cancel. We told the service representative then that we’d fulfill our 3 year contract, but were sure to state how unhappy we were with the product and that we were only continuing the service to satisfy the terms of our contract.
On August 1, 2008, 30 days in advance of our 3-year contract term, we called to cancel our service again. However, we were told that because we didn’t notify Protect America in writing 60 days in advance of our contract term that Protect America will be taking our money for another year for a service we’re not happy with and for a service we told Protect America that we wanted to cancel only 4 months into this contract. WE HAVE NEVER BEEN SATISFIED WITH PROTECT AMERICA’S PRODUCT! I’ve emailed them several times, mailed a cancellation request via certified mail, and faxed a cancellation request after reading so many online complaints that are almost identical to our own.
Lie after lie …
DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH THIS COMPANY. They are liars, as well as a greedy company that does not care about customer service.
We purchased a security system from Protect America in January 2008. It was shipped to our house on Jan. 28th. By this point, we knew that this Security System was not appropriate for our needs. First, the service representative, (Chris?) told me that the security system would be appropriate for my needs without having seen my house. Next, when I said I had two dogs who are allowed on the furniture, he told me that the motion sensors would not activate to them. (This is untrue.) Finally, the service representative told me that having sound detectors would also not be a problem with dogs, which is also untrue. Essentially, the original sales man lied to me.
When Protect America started calling me on the 29th of January and throughout Feburary to install my system, I repeatedly told them that I would like to return my security system and requested information on how to do so. Each time, I was either essentially hung up on after stating that I needed help or told that someone else would call me. On Feb. 5th, I called Protect America requesting help on returning their product and cancelling my contract, but again received no help. I attempted to return the security system by mailing it back, but for some reason it was returned to me. Now Protect America will not refund my money nor help me to cancel my contract because the 7 day cancellation period has passed.
To cancel my contract, it will end up costing approximately $1,000 for a security system that is still sitting unopened in its original box.
They would only cancel services if you were deployed to Iraq
I have a Protect America system which we thought we would use religiously. After a year we moved to a new house and never unpacked the system. We contacted Protect America to cancel the service, but was told we had a 3 year contract.
Nothing was said about a 60 day written notification of cancellation. I recently called, knowing I was about 45 days or so from the end of the contract, to cancel the service. That’s when they threw the “60 day written” in my face. It took me me a couple of tries to get someone that even spoke English.
I did find out that if I was deployed to Iraq, they would cancel the service. They do not care that you are not using or wanting the service.
There are other services that are cheaper and better.
Contact the Federal Consumer Commission
For all of you who have experienced problems with cancellation from Protect America, I highly suggest you contact the Federal Consumer Commission at 1.877.382.4357 followed up with a call to your local consumer protection office as well. I too have am having the same problem getting out of my contract.
No hesitation is recommending Protect America to friends and family
Very pleased with their overall support, equipment, and security response.
There has never been a time when the security station did not call the house within 30 seconds of a tripped alarm. Their technicians are courteous, and knowledgeable. I recently had a new system installed in my home. Sean, the field service technician, was extremely professional, and friendly.
I would recommend Protect America to my friends, and family without reservation. They stand by their products, and service.
Tricked by a sales rep
The Customer Representative tricked me into getting this alarm system by saying that I did not need a phone line. I didn’t have one because I had a cell phone and that’s all I need. Well, because I had signed I was stuck for three years. Now I’m trying to cancel again, and because I missed the 60 day window, I’m stuck for another year.
Had a bad experience with Protect America too?

Using Protect America for years to come
Protect America is the best Home Security Company that I have ever in my 9 years of being a home owner dealt with.
I am a Protect America customer and have been since 2005. Prior to Protect America I was a BRINKS customer and believe me being with BRINKS was a night mare. PROTECT AMERICA is the best thing that has ever happend to me. Since I have had Protect America I have been worry free because I know that they are protecting my home. Sure, I have had 1 or 2 minor issues, but each time I have reported an issue Protect America has immediately resolved the issues. To this date I absolutely no complaints about Protect America.
I plan to continue to allow Protect America to provide me Monitoring Service for years to come.
I ran into this web site looking up my security company’s website to order additional equipment and was shocked to see bad reviews. After reading the bad reviews I realized that most of the bad reviews I see about Protect America are clearly because people don’t read what they sign.
To all those people that have given Protect America a bad review because they failed to read what they signed BE AN ADULT AND TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOUR ACTIONS, NEXT TIME READ YOUR CONTRACT BEFORE YOU SIGN. If you don’t understand it, don’t sign it until you find a disinterested third party, preferably a lawyer or paralegal, who can read it and explain it to you.
It took two death certificates and the Attorney General to cancel the contract
Don’t do business with these people. We waited until our contract ran out and called and were told we hadn’t submitted a letter with 60 day advance notice. It took the attorney general to get them to cancel our service. Mother in law just died and we called to cancel her contract, were told we had to have 60 day notice and when I reiterated she was dead, requested death certificates from her and father in law who has been dead three years. Once you get established with them it takes an act of congress to get rid of them.
Had unbeatable service
My installation involved many hard wire connections, wireless connections, and zones. I had many choices when it came to selecting a Security Company. I’m very glad I chose Protect America. I had the pleasure of working with Hoss, Marcus, and David for technical support and installation. They battled snow storms, hail, and may difficulties to get it done right. Their major concern was to get it done right and make the customer happy. In the end, I got an awesome system at a very affordable price. These guys are the best! Thanks.
Repair guy didn’t understand system
Several months ago (so long that I do not remember) I purchased a “do-it-yourself” alarm system from ProtectAmerica,Inc; Round Rock TX 78681.
I never could get the stick-on sensors to operate, so they finally started sending some nx 650 sensors that they said would fix my problem. They didn’t. I arranged to have a tec guy come out for $150 to fix my system; found out that he was a contractor and didn’t any more about the system than I did. As soon as he left, the system stopped working. There goes $150 bucks because his services were already deducted from my account. After almost a year of hassleing With PA Inc.I decided to bite the bullet. My credit card got lost, so I sent a certified check, return receipt requested, to pay off the balance of my account. There are no loopholes in their contract, so that is the only way I could find to close the contract.
Never never sign a contract before all of the details are explained and agreed to. I learned my lesson the hard way, and I will never ever have anything to do with ProtectAmerica. Their do-it yourself kits are of very poor quality; having to go through many procedures on the phone with a multitasker is enough to stress out anyone.
Just don’t go there; believe me it’s not worth it.
Watch for hidden fees
This company salesman talks you through an online agreement and tells you that you have a five-day grace period and a “seven-day” familiarization period to change your mind on the system. What he does not tell you and is not noticed on the agreement is that a $79.99 “restocking” fee will be charged. So I was charged first and last month monitoring at &45 a month (my service was more due to not having a land-line phone or internet)at $90 plus $19.85 shipping for a total of $109.85. (Yes, I feel foolish) Now I’m told about the restocking fee so I’ll only be refunded $29.99. COST OF TRYING THIS GE PRODUCT THROUGH PROTECT AMERICA $80!!!!
I plan to dispute the charge through my Visa company. Just want to warn others.
