Got locked in paying for a product that doesn’t work
Because I don’t have a landline, I had few options for a security system.
GE’s wireless system seemed like it would do the trick and for about 3 months, it did. Then I started having problems with the sensors. They would say the door or window was open but it wasn’t (therefore I couldn’t arm the system). The first few times I tolerated it and after a few phone calls they sent me a replacement sensor. The problem is that it is nearly all the sensors…it eventually got so bad that I just disable the sensor on my front door altogether.
Eventually I just stopped using the worthless and unreliable system. I called customer service today to just be rid of this company once and for all BUT there is no early termination fee! That’s right–you CAN’T cancel once you’re in. Please beware and don’t bother with this company or at least stay away from the wireless system. I’ve had my system working for about 5 months…out of about 30. Not worth it in my opinion.
They really don’t care if you’re unhappy because once you sign up you’re locked in for 36 months.
Hope this helps someone avoid the costly mistake that I made.
For those of you complaining, use common sense
I just have a few comments to make. It’s funny how these “STAY AWAY FROM PROTECT AMERICA” rants are so intellectually shy of a real complaint it cracks me up. There’s simple reasoning behind these “flaming” complaints that go on for pages that people refuse to admit.
For instance, “They wouldn’t let me cancel and that’s PREPOSTEROUS”. Simple solution: Read your contract. in ANY situation. It’s a simple answer, written notice, 30 days prior to end of contract. Really, how hard is that to comply with. It’s the same with most top alarm companies. And you’re getting (in most cases) a FREE alarm system, why would a company not want to “finance” that cost to you over 3 years at an affordable rate? Sure, pay whatever you want for the system up-front if you want the lower monthly rate. But god forbid think of it economically.
Example two: “Hard to reach technical support or CS”. Answer: Mostly wrong for the sole fact that every dept contacts the customer multiple times a day or week for their benefit to be assertive.
The sales people ARE aggressive. But just like any other sales rep with any other company, no one has “made” you do anything and you have control of what you do, even reading the contract that’s right in front of you to verify what you get and your benefits. If you ask me, if someone is complaining about contract length, price, or not being able to cancel or return equipment or, any of the most common complaints as those, it’s completely naive of you to complain about your own shortcomings.Of course there are going to be bad customer service complaints and miscommunication errors, as with any company, you can’t please everyone. Go checkout how many unresolved complaints DELL or ADT or any other major brand has.
If you get a good price, and happy with what you’re being provided with, which is the piece of mind and security that you’re choosing to go for, and it makes sense, do it. If not, don’t complain about your own negligence.
Every day, a new problem
I had high hopes when getting an alarm system, but now I completely regret it. Every day a sensor dies. I go through hour long phone calls that fix the problem for the day then it’s back to not working the next. I wrote asking how much it would cost to cancel my contract. Their response “What’s your address.” Oh thank you, that answers my very simple question. I write again and they say I can either give my contract to someone else(like an enemy or ex-boyfriend) or pay the rest of the contract, aka $35 a month for the next two years all right now. This is so stupid. Unlike a normal and good company, they don’t have a fee so you can just cancel your membership. Please, don’t go with this company. I’ve wasted too much money and worry over this crap.
So many false alarms, cops said they were going to stop responding
Run away from this company as soon as you can.
I have been their customer for 2.5 years. Started having trouble with their unit sending false alarms since Dec 2008, I have had 8 false alarms so far and have had the cops come over on 4 of these occassions. The cops have told us that they will stop responding to alarms from our home in future or we will have to pay for their visit. I have tried to resolve the problem with this company all this while and none of their solutions worked, finally when I had one more false alarm triggered yesterday (9/14/09) and the cops came. I thought enough is enough and called PA to cancel the account.
They wouldn’t, all they keep talking about is the contract even after I told them repeatedly that I cannot pay for a faulty system, the guy from the cancellation department insists he knows what the problem is and that he can solve it but I have would not take it because that’s been the same promise I have been getting for the last 9 months with no solution but after more than 40 minutes of heated conversation, he offers me a buyout where I would pay for half of my remaining contract and he calls it more than a fair deal.. I say it is very unfair but I want them out of my house ASAP so take my money and cancel it.
Here is the summary,
– The system is great as long as it works
– If there are problems then GOD help you
– Cancellation policy sucks and they just won’t let you go no matter what
I am switching to a company with a better reputation and whole lot more concern for their customers than the contract.
Nothing positive to report. They took the negotiated contract cancellation money and disappeared. No calls from them after that to win me back.
Protect America helped out with NO extra charge
I just wanted to say that my door sensor wasn’t working properly and when I called the customer service they helped me fix it right away. Over the phone she helped me try to move the sensor and reset it, but it turns out the way I had the sensor on my front door the screen door was hitting it every time it closed. She express mailed a new sensor and I got it the next day .. at NO charge to me! I was so surprised. Sensor works great now that I put it in a place where the other door won’t hit it. Thanks for the speedy delivery!!
Worry free with Protect America
At the end of October my contract will expire, but I have every intention of staying with this company. I absolutely love my system because I just feel SO much safer now. You don’t even have to worry about your dog setting it off because they have some sot of thing in the system that lets it know it’s just a dog/cat and not an actual break-in. I had a problem with my sensor on the kitchen door, but turns out I just didn’t line it properly. When I called the customer service line they answered right away – which I was REALLY surprised about because usually you have to wait on hold foreverrrr! But not with this comany, I love them! They’re the best!!
Proud member of Protect America
We have had Protect America for over a year, with absolutely no problems. I actually got calls to check out my system and the woman was friendly and helpful. Once even when my husband forgot the code, i ran in to shut it off. They called anyway and said they wanted to check to ensure everything was good but since I used my code, they did not need a password verification. Even once when the power blipped and it sent the alarm off, they called. Not sure why folks are not getting their system monitored but we have had no issues but just great service and performance. Also, if your alarm is going off, check your batteries. That is your responsibility. If you read the book, I am sure it tells you that but also common sense should prevail. An alarm company we hired to wire our cameras, also reps the GE system so maybe it is a combination of mis-application and misuse is the problem.
Protect America lived up to expectations
I have been with three different alarm companies (Protect America being the third) and I have to say that their service is what I expected. The salesperson was friendly, kind of pushy, and helpful. The equipment was like all GE equipment; reliable, easy to work with, and user friendly. The only difference is that I installed this one myself, which was not rocket science. It was a standard three year agreement with no extra charge for the equipment warranty. I am satisfied thus far. (I have had an alarm for many years though and I know what to expect from alarm companies).
Protect America should be called Ripoff America
We use to have ADT and switched to Protect America, biggest mistake of my life!
The alarm didn’t work almost from day one. After repeated phone calls to try and get the alarm to work, put on hold forever and hung up on and stating we have to pay for a service call, I gave up. They continued to charge my credit card so I tried to cancel my service. Like eveyone else they said it had to be done in writing.
So I sent them a fax explaining for non service of contract. Then they said I had to cancel my contract 2 months prior to the expiration date. I canceled the monthly payment with my credit card company. Now I get a letter from a collection agency saying I owe over $500, to pay up or there will be a judgment against me. First off it’s been less than 10 months at $20 a month. The agency said it’s for the equipment. What equipment, it’s not even their equipment.
I refuse to pay them any more money. I’m being threatened with a judgment, for what? For equipment that’s not even theirs? For monitoring an alarm that hasn’t worked for over 4 year? Unbelievable!
I was not satisfied with my concern resolution. Protect America said if I paid them an additional $200 they will not proceed with a judgement against me. Just to get them off my back, I paid them the $200. I figured I paid them over $1,000 for absoluetly nothing. The equipment wasn’t theirs, they wouldn’t fix the alarm and it didn’t work for over 4 years. What a nightmare!
If you sign a contract, beware. It will be a nightmare trying to get out of it, even if the alarm doesn’t work. When you contact them, one person tells you something different then someone else and you don’t know which end is up when you try to cancel their service. Go with ADT, they will at least let you cancel a contract for non-performance. Instead of Protect America, it should be Ripoff America.
Stuck paying for another year for a product that doesn’t work
This company should be run out of business. I have never been such a dissatisfied customer in my entire life, and I’m a pretty easy going individual. I have the same story as most others who have been enduring agreements with Protect America for more than a year. Purchased equipment and signed 3 year commitment on 03/08/06. System was inoperable within a year (the alarm started going off randomly… couldn’t shut it off and had to unplug the entire thing). Tech support was no help and require ridiculous rates if a tech needs to be dispatched. Customer Service is not a part of their language. The reps are rude and not helpful. I dutifully paid my 3 years of non-existent service anyway. When I called to officially cancel my agreement yesterday, I was told I would have the pleasure of paying for another year because contracts are auto-renewed if notice isn’t given within 60 days of termination date. Run far, far away if you’re considering doing business with these jokers. For us that were suckered in can somebody say “Class Action?”
Don’t do business with these people

Whatever you do, DON’T get this system
This is the WORST alarm system. Not to mention the company itself. They are a total scam!! We have been paying for service for 2.5 years now. Our system only worked for a few months. We have had it serviced several times and it would work for a few days then stop again. Please don’t purchase this system. They make you sign a contract for 2 – 3 years….don’t do it.
This is just an update to my first post…The alarm system and the company is still a total scam!! Since my last post my contract with them has ended. It took me 4 phone calls and 3 emails to get my policy cancelled. Remember, when your contract ends you need to cancel it 60 days prior to your last month of service or else they will reistate your contract for another 3 years. In the 3 years we had our system it only worked for around 6 months. We had is serviced at least 3 times. Don’t get this system!
Protect America is not consumer friendly – BEWARE
This is a scam company. The provide cheap equipment that never really works, customer service is apalling, I have called numerous times to cancel, and everytime I call they say my contract date is another year out. Signed up for a 2 year contract, and now in my 4th year with NO equipment that has never worked. STAY AWAY from Protect America at all costs. This is not a consumer friendly company. They just want to railroad you into contracts that renew automatically and tell you just enough to keep you drug along for the ride.
They did eventually calling me back after I sent an email to their CEO via the web site. I ended up getting a call back and the only way out was to pay for half of the new term they had automatically renewed me for. I took their offer of like $120 buyout to basically get the problem to go away and make sure they could not do it again. The issue is resolved from that
perspective, but I still highly suggest people be very wary of the business practices of this company. I personally would suggest everyone stay away and go with a different company with a better reputation.
Watch out! You’ll be paying for a long time
I originally accepted Protect America when I purchased my home; three years later, I received a notice that I was to deploy to Iraq for duty. I did not contact the company until I was able to settle down, which was after the 60 day window had expired. I have written letters to the Corporate Office as well as the Business Office and no one will respond other than to insist that I pay the past due amount. I informed them that for three years, even though I stopped using their service after 14 months because they were no where to be found as far as Customer Service, I religiously paid my bill and do not intend to pay after the three year contract service period. I am still fighting and have informed them that I will begin paying $5 per month until the debt is paid off. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY IF YOU DO NOT INTEND TO PAY FOR A VERY LONG TIME!!!!!
Protect America is the BEST
Had my system for about a month now. Works fantastically! I couldn’t have found a better system. I love that it was free! Protect America is the way to go if you’re searching for an alarm.
I work for a DIFFERENT alarm company. I went with Protect America
Hello. I actually work for a different alarm company, but I have service from Protect America. I like the equipment (GE has great alarm products). I went with protect america because their price was better than what I was offered with my employee discount. I have never had any issues and I think their service is good.
Protect America was not pushy
Customer service has been excellent; questions were answered, expectations set. I contacted numerous security companies. Protect America sales rep was the most knowledgeable; he was influential without being ‘pushy’.
Protect America won’t stop asking for money … months before it’s due
I am an unfortunate customer of Protect America. I paid my monitoring bill for one year up-front. And lo-and behold, after 3 months they want another years payment – a full 9 months in advance! I wish I could cancel the service now. DO NOT go with Protect America.
There is no excuse for customer service’s attitude
The actual system seems good enough–it randomly beeps on occasion and the time doesn’t stay set correctly but otherwise, not too bad. However, Protect America has the worst customer service I’ve ever had. The representative actually said something to effect that if we wouldn’t do something they suggested, we might as well rip it off the wall and burn it. Poor form and inexcusable service. If you’re looking for good service, go somewhere else.
Protect America made deployment easier
Protect America made the purchase of our home security system a breeze! They were very professional and knowledgeable about the equipment we purchased. I am thankful they helped me give my family peace of my mind. I am an active duty Marine that spends quite a bit of time away from home and will now have one less thing to worry about while deployed!
Overwhelmingly satisfied with their customer service
I purchased one of Protect America’s alarm systems yesterday morning. I was totally satisfied with the service that ***** provided…I have already sent emails to two of my friends suggesting they call and have Protect America alarms installed. Big thank you to Protect America. ***** was great…he provided info on all the systems and I chose the one that benefits me the best…I felt very enlightened when we rang off…being satisfied with a product that one can be “stuck” with for three years is extremely important to me…and customer service is the most important service that can be provided…so many companies have forgotten what CS means…glad Protect America hasn’t.
After break-in, cops recommended Protect America
My wife and I got back from the movies this afternoon to find our backdoor smashed in and our place trashed. Not much missing but everything was destroyed. Probably a few punk kids. The officer recommended Protect America. I called and signed up for a free bundle that covers most of our entrance points. I paid for overnight delivery and should be here tomorrow morning. I am impressed with their price and service so far . . . still angry about the punk kids though. My tip for everyone . . . if you do not have an alarm you should get one.
Salesman made his money then never held up his end
This is a true and accurate statement; I called Protect America to purchase an alarm for my home, talked with a Sales Manager, agreed on a system with numerous window and door sensors along with motion detectors and was promised free installation since I refused to install all of the equipment myself, then together we went through the contract online and I paid that same day.
I was also given a date for a technician to come to my home and install the system. It cost me over $500 up front and I was promised free installation, but the date for installation was set for a timeframe past the 5 to 7 business days to cancel the contract.
The date came for the technician to arrive and install the system and he never showed up. I called the company and they told me I never paid for a technician and that they could see on their computer that a date was set but it got cancelled somehow. They intentionally set a date for a technician to install the alarm past the date for cancellation. The salesman made his money and I got screwed in the process.
I wrote to the President of this company and all I get is numerous phone calls wanting to reschedule a date for installation, but this company can not be trusted to provide the service I need after the initial mistrust I will always have with them. I have an upopened box of alarm equipment they sent to me and I’m out over $500. They told me I have to pay for monitoring for 2 years and I will not pay them another dime and had to inform my bank of this situation to prevent Protect America from taking any monies from my account. They will never recieve another dime from me and I could care less if they turn the account over to a collection agency since I have never recieved any service from these people.
BEWARE of this company. they have untrustworthy sales people. I never got to the level of having them monitor my alarm and never will, so please do your homework before signing any contract with this company. It cost me over $500.
Happy with service
I just signed a contract with Protect America. I was pleased with the offer and the rapid delivery. I hope their service remains as great as it has been thus far.
No complaints with Protect America
I liked the people and I loved the price. They were very clear about the terms of the contract and **** waited on the line while I read through the whole thing. No complaints from me.
