Do your research and know your options
We signed up for a Protect America system 2 years ago. We signed up for the 36 month contract with no cost for the system. I really wish that I had done some more research at the time. We signed up with Protect America and have actually had good customer service, but the product that we received is subpar to the other products on the market and the contract sticks you with the system for 36 months. I have now signed up with a no contract EMC plan in the area that is far superior to what we had with Protect America. For those asking for a way out of the contract, there is one way that I have found and used. You have to get someone else to take over the contract and the obligation for the remainder of the term. Protect America was very helpful in helping me to do this from providing all of the paper work to making sure everything was ready to go to bill the new owner of the system. There are people out there that would like to have an alarm, without a long term contract and by aquiring someone else’s contract with a year or so remaining is not a bad deal. At least the Protect America system can be transfered to someone else since it is wireless and not hardwired into the house.
Watch out for the contract and early termination fees
I have used their service for 3 years 6 months. I thought I will be out of contract after 3 years but what I heard is that mine is renewed every year if I don’t tell them not to after 3 years. Now I moved to different state and I wanted to cancel the service and they charge me early termination fee. I know I didn’t remember I have signed that part, “the contract is renewed every year after 3 years’ contract”. But the term doesn’t sound right. Because if I am paying lower monthly price because of the yearly contract, I would be responsible for early termination but I heard that they do not simply allow monthly subscription. With one year’s contract I don’t get anything from them but do I have to pay early termination fee? I don’t understand the early termination fee at all. I think there are many people who paid this kind of early termination fee without doubt. Anyway be careful!!!
HB 1702 will get you out of automatic contract renewal
I signed up in July 08 for a 2-year contract.
I initially had some billing problems (we were supposed to have the first 2 months free but they charged us anyway) but PA was immediately responsive in fixing this. The issue came, as does everyone’s issue, when it was time to cancel the contract with Protect America. I called a month in advance to cancel with PA, and the representative referred me to the contract which specified that they needed to send in writing my intent to cancel the contract at least 60 days before the renewal, or I would be locked into an additional year of service.
HOWEVER – after months of annoyances dealing with this company I found the magic formula to deal with them. There is a piece of legislature in Texas law called HB 1702 passed in September 2007. This law requires companies like PA to send IN WRITING a notice at least 15 days before your cancellation letter is due, detailing what will happen and the methods you need to go about in order to cancel your account properly. PA never sent us a letter and I’m betting they generally don’t send those letters. This Texas law considers this as engaging in a Deceptive Business Practice and the consequence is, basically, that your contract is void, and you are owed money from the minute you called them and gave them your intent to not renew the contract. They are required within a “reasonable time” to amend the error and refund your money.
After dealing with them for 5 months and being charged the whole time, I submitted my issue to the BBB and mentioned this law. Within 2 days PA contacted me, and on the 3rd day they agreed to refund me the money they had taken and to close my account. I hope it works as nicely for everyone as it finally did for me, but if not I would suggest calling around for a lawyer who may be interested in pursuing a Class Action lawsuit against PA because this company obviously uses this renewal tactic intentionally, which is legally considered a Deceptive Business Practice.
Protect America is a terrible company
We have been under contract with our PA wireless system for almost 3 years now, and I am thrilled that we will soon be done with this horrible system and company. Our system has NEVER functioned properly and PA has done NOTHING about it. They just keep referring to the 3 year contract that we signed. I have used Brinks and ADT in the past, which at the the time did not offer a wireless system. I would have been much better off NOT HAVING A SECURITY SYSTEM at all. It would have saved me about $2000.00! Now that ADT is offering a wireless system now, I will be making the switch. DO NOT GO WITH PROTECT AMERICA if you are considering it. Once they get you in contract they could care less about if the system is working or not.
There is nothing good about this company
Terrible system, terrible service, locks you into a three year contract. NOT Military Friendly. Every time a thunder storm came it would nock the system off line. You’ll have to spend hours on the phone getting help to set it up again. They won’t call to inform you of system malfunctions but they’ll continue to charge! Sometimes the representatives aren’t knowledgeable about the system. I had the mobile system which always feel off if doors were slammed or dogs brushed up against them. The “glass smash” sensing device did not work at all and costs over $300. Do not use Protect America.
Protect America only cares about money, not service
I signed up for and got home security alarm from Protect America in Feb. 2008. We had to install the alarm system ourselves and everything worked really good until last Feb. 2010. That is when we found out just the kind of people we were dealing with.
The system showed low battery, they so called “checked” the system on line and said it was the window & door sensors, but they did not sell the batteries. So we found the batteries from another company on line and bought and installed all these. The system still showed low batteries, so called them again, they said it was the battery in main system and they had those and would send us one and put on bill. So got that they said to call and let them direct installation of battery so did.
Still no system over a three week period, (in which there were break ins throughout our community) so we told them to just disconnect our service. They said they could not do that, even though our two yr. contract was up that month, that we would have had to have given them a sixty day written notice, since we did not that was automatic renewal. So we stopped the bank from letting them draw automatic on acct., had to pay bank $35.00 for that. Now they have threatened us with law suit unless we pay for those months.
We are paying these thieves, but please do not get involved with them. They are only interested in getting your money whether you are getting service or not. There are home security units you can buy from sellers on eBay or lots of other sites that you outright buy, and can get a good unit with several window and door sensors for around $125.00 one time charge. You monitor the system yourself, it calls whatever phone numbers you want called first, yours, your cell phone, sheriff’s office, closest neighbor and can handle several that calls right on down your list until it gets an answer.
We have a small dog inside and are way happier with these units, you can cut the alarm off from anywhere by your cell phone and you can re-arm system from anywhere. Way beats Protect America from calling you when you are 100’s of miles from home, tell you your alarm is going off, have to tell them your security word, last four numbers of social security no. and then they ask you what to do. How in the h*** would we know? That is another advantage to the unit you buy outright, you can listen in on your home over cell phone and know whether, in our case they are killing your dog, or what is really going on.
Do not pay these people money the own right outs offer so much more, without the headaches.
Protect America does not support the troops
This company, and many like it, make me sick. 1.5 extra years of service payments after I no longer had the system. I was told by customer service reps several times that it would be done and cancelled after our phone conversation(conveniently not documented properly). I just payed the “cancellation” fee and feel sick. I serve and defend this country and have for years. But NOT so our people can screw our own people.
PAID FOR YEARS WITHOUT ANY MONITORING WHATSOEVER
At first, my experience with PA was positive – they monitored my home as expected and alarm events were handled well. However, when I moved the company’s priorities and customer service became apparent. They would not let me out of the contract when I moved and I was forced to either pay for the entire duration of the contract (although I’d have no monitoring) or rollover into an additional 3 year contract at my new location at a slightly lower monthly rate.
I opted for the rollover contract which was a terrible choice. They shipped DEFECTIVE equipment (and billed me for new equipment), multiple calls to resolve were not answered and they failed to ever give me a working system. Phone calls and written requests to cancel were unheeded.
As a result I have PAID FOR YEARS WITHOUT ANY MONITORING WHATSOVER. Customer service runs round and round emphasizing that customers sign a contract but takes no responsibility for providing the service that the customer is paying for! Had Protect America promptly addressed the issue with defective equipment and gotten my service up and running this would be one thing, but $898 for 3 years of non-service?
Protect America stole from customer
Do not do business with Protect America, they are thieves. In fact, I am about to file criminal charges against them for making unauthorized charges on my credit card. My system has not been monitored for almost 2 years (22 months) yet they continue to take money from me for alarm monitoring service. The alarm quit working at least 18 months ago and I unplugged it from the wall to stop it from beeping. They never once called to tell me they were not getting a signal, to make sure a thief hadn’t broken in and cut my phone and power lines.
Every time I tried to call them to report the faulty alarm equipment, I was placed on perpetual hold until I just hung up. When I finally got a hold of someone last week, they promised to send me a working alarm panel, for an additional $479, but since their monthly rates were low, I agreed to take it and continue out their contract. It was not delivered until 2 days after it was promised, and when it came it was missing parts. The tech could not get it to work, and said he would send me the missing parts overnight.
That package didn’t come for 5 days later, after I cancelled (or tried to cancel) their service and went with ADT instead. Just today, I noticed they (Protect America) charged an additional $109 to my credit card, apparently for the “missing parts” which I never received. They are crooks and someone should sue the crap out of them and put them under.
Protect America is a complete scam
Buyer beware! This is a scam. They are more interested in shady contracts that are next to impossible to cancel than they are maintaining good customer service. Their monitoring of the alarm system is horrible. This company should be forced out of business. They just skirt on the gray shady side of legit business with their “Automatic Contract Renewal” policy. It is a shame people are allowed to operate business like that. To hire legal advice is to costly to fight the harrassment so people just pay the bill. Do some research before contracting any alarm security firm especially over the internet. We live in scam society. BEWARE!!!
Protect America doesn’t even know how to work with local authorities
Forget ProtectAmerica – they have no idea what is required if you need a security system registration in your area. They told me my system can be activated immediately but when I checked with my local police dept. I learned it would take over 10 days to get paperwork through and that legally there can be no police or fire response until Protect America takes care of this paperwork. I trust them to know how to work with the police and fire dept. in my area since that is who I am counting on to respond to an emergency.
Protect America should be ashamed of themselves
Absolutely the worst company ever!! I have had nothing but horrible customer service from them and they are nothing but scam artist! After learning that I can’t cancel my contract for another 2 years I decided to dismiss their lack of customer service and give them another shot after not connecting my alarm for 6 months. I called to order more sensors for my now larger home just to find out that its going to cost $459!!! When I first bought my alarm system I told them that I would eventrually be moving into a larger home and they assured me it was no problem to send me more sensors… yeah, no problem for them!!! They never mentioned how expensive it would be. Thanks to their lies and scams I have an alarm that I can’t afford. Perhaps I should have stuck with the old fashioned way… buy a dog! Do not use this company!!
Great experience with Protect America
I called and reviewed several major security companies.I then chose Protect America.Everyone I spoke to was courteous and professional. Their prices were in similar ranges as the major security companies. I was pleased with the G.E Simon XT security control panel sent to me as well as the window/door and motion sensors.I had many questions, called often and each time was treated courteously and professionally. I am not sure why all the negative reviews. I even reviewed my experience on their website and made a suggestion. I got an email response as well as a telephone call!!!
Protect America LIED to customer
In July I called to cancel our service and request that the equipment be picked up. The phone rep advised that the equipment was ours to keep, and confirmed cancellation of service. On Sept 3, Protect America debited my checking account for a mothly service charge and mailed me a bill for service in August. In a phone call today to the billing center, I was advised that my cancellation request was less than the 60 days prior to contract renewal, so I am stuck for another 13 months of payments for service in our home from which we are moving. When I switched from annual to monthly payments, I was given to believe that our contract was a month-to-month contract. Never again will we use Protect America, and we will read reviews carefully before signing up for service in our new home.
Hands-down the worst experience with Protect America
This is the worst company I have ever dealt with, their customer service is the worst, I had them for 5 long years and the alarm never worked properly… I had a local company come in to take over, but certain codes are needed to reprogram the call center number, Protect America will not give you those codes on the equipment you bought from them… The people are rude now, and un-helpfull, say to shove it and buy a new system from someone else, my system was a 1500.00 sham!
Read the contract, if you did, you would never agree to their terms. Like another reviewer said, it is like signing yourself (your house) away to the devil. They “are not responsible for notifying police/dispatch” if your alarm goes off. So basically I paid for a service and when my house was broken into (granted, not their fault), nothing happened. Why spend the money on the alarm system then? It is impossible to get out of the contract, the fine print is ridiculous. They don’t troubleshoot when the system fails but rather find ways to get you to spend more money and be further obligated to their company. Terrible. Terrible. Terrible.
Pick ANYONE over Protect America
Do not use Protect America. It’s signing your life away to the devil. Like many other reviews here it is virtually impossible to cancel the service. First they claimed to have “lost” my cancellation letter and now they claim I can only cancel on the anniversary date of my contract (which is months away). Do yourself a favor and go with a different company. ANY other company.
Getting an attorney
I counted the months down until the end of my agreement with this AWFUL company and now I am fighting for my deposit. Protect America stated the wording should have been Non Refundable Dposit but it does not state NRD, it stated deposit. Then they stated we can hold the deposit for an adidiitonal 12 mos even though you do not have service with us. I am now filing a complaint with BBB and then seeking an attorney. If you are thinking about receiving services with this company, please BEWARE and if you decide to obtain their services, “God Bless You”, you will definitely need it. This is the worst form of any business and they should nto be allowed to continue any services in any form or matter.
Protect America does NOT protect you
Horrible. Please, anybody who reads this, do yourself and your family a favor and DO NOT use Protect America as your alarm system provider or monitoring service. They are horrible. The person who “walked” me through the installation sounded like a street thug and I could barely understand him. He also was laughing and joking with somebody when he was on the phone with me. He also forgot to tell me about several features of the system.
Most importantly, if a burglar breaks in while you and your family are home, you will be hog tied and dead on the floor before your phone ever rings. I have the wireless system, and a battery in one of the sensors went out in the middle of the night. I grabbed my gun and checked the entire house BEFORE turning the alarm off. I then turned off the alarm, and waited for the phone call to tell them I couldn’t find anything wrong. The phone call never came. The next day I called and asked why, and I was told they don’t call until the alarm has gone off for 90 seconds. Well I got news for you. My alarm went off for well over 90 seconds!! But even 90 seconds is a lifetime if a intruder is in your home in the middle of the night. Their lame excuse was, if we contact the police right away they might charge me for a false alarm. I was baffled. I told the woman, how about you just call ME right away, and if I don’t answer, or if I say something is wrong, THEN you can contact the police. She said that isn’t their policy.
Their policy has not changed, and neither has my decision to cancel their service the day my contract is expired.
Learned lesson after 5 long years
I am cancelling service with Protect America after having 2 properties, and 5 years of loyalty with them. First, when you call to cancel they “transfer” you to the dept that handles cancellations but really they’re transferring you to someone who tries to get you to stay. That’s when they offer to match any price you’ve seen out there. Only when I’ve decided to leave will they offer me a competitive price. Onec the rep has finished their sales pitch to keep you as a customer, that’s when they tell you have must write a letter to cancel service. I’ve been paying $30-$35 a month, and found several reputable companies who will do monthly monitoring for only $8.95 with internet tracking capabilities and so many other features. I do not recommend Protect America to anyone, for price, quality, and service reasons.
Protect America is a fraud
I had e-mailed a cancel letter to Protect America in April 2010 as my contract was up in July. I never heard anything from them so on July 7th I wanted to make sure this is the last month, they said they never received a e-mail and I am stuck with another year’s service. This is fraud at it best. The key pad never worked from the first, and it was a nightmare trying to get things working right, worst security system I have ever seen. Larry Taylor
Protect America doesn’t call when alarm goes off
Been unfortunately tied into this disaster of a company through 3 year contract which renewed “automatically” for a 4th year without my approval. Alarm has gone off repeatedly (thank god not for a real robbery) over the past 3 years…never have I received a call. When I called about this, they said they don’t call if the alarm is cancelled within a few minutes…so I let it go off for 10 minutes…still no call. It is a joke…you are paying for nothing…terrible product, beyond horrible customer service, contracts with small print to rip you off…
Protect America doesn’t care when times are tough
I had a Protect America alarm system for 2 years when I decided to cancel it because I lost my job 8 months before. The contract was up to October 1, 2009. I tried to cancel on October 5 but they said I had to stay for another year as they had extended the contract automatically. I finally paid 1/2 year penalty to get rid of it. On the positive side,it was easy to install and change sensor locations. I had several alarms but I never got a call from them or a police visit , so I don’t know if they actually inform the police or if it is all bogus. I would never recommend them as they are no flexible and I don’t trust their monitoring.
Protect America never responded to customer
Terrible customer service. I tried to cancel my contract and payoff the rest of the contract by phone, email, fax, and letter, and the company never got back to me. What a nightmare!
Protect America tricked customer into a binding renewed contract
I also had problems with them canceling my contract. I called them 8 months before it expired and they said to call them back in May. I called them back and was informed that It was to late to cancel, it had been automatically renewed. I had to pay a six month penatly to cancel. What makes their service even more pathetic is that they did not know what they were monitoring. I canceled the phone they were apparently monitoring 8 months prior to the original end date of the contract. Their entry contact points were also all pasted to the walls and doors. Most of them fell off within the first year. I will never recommend Protect America, Inc. to anyone that wants security in their home. They are a complete joke and a waste of money.
