Tech was amazing
After reading all these peoples comments I hope my husband did the right thing in changing our alarm system. I hope I don’t get a surprise in my bill when I receive it. As for the tech xxxxxxx he did a excellecnt job. He explained all details to my husband and myself. He was very proffessional. You have a great employee!!!
No problems here
We bought a system from Northstar 2 years ago. It has worked great and we have never had a problem with it. We used to have ADT and feel like Northstar has taken care of us better. We had a break-in a couple of nights ago and the system did its job. We were home, so it was kind of crazy. The alarm went off and scared the intruder away. The police showed up. We are really glad we bought the system. We definitely would recommend Northstar. Great company!
Helpful techs, lousy contract
There are a few issues that I would like to have resolved regarding Northstar. Generally speaking, the Riddoch brothers who did the installing were very courteous and though some technical problems emerged in the installation they worked them out even though it took working until nearly midnight. Nothing was ever mentioned about “length of contract”. I guess I had better look at what I signed.
Company will lie to you
This company has lied to us on several issues. I too had an issue with attempting to cancel after our 18 month enrollment. We continued to be billed for services we were not receiving as Northstar’s alarms were removed from our home after having poor service and due to military obligations. All attempts to terminate services were responded with comments of having a 5 yr. contact and we were stuck. Finally we got someone to say that we could terminate our contact with them if we provided copies of the military orders. Well, to make a long story short. they then denied being able to do this. We have been given false information many times by this company. This list would be too long to detail. Stay away from this company unless you have money to burn because that is exactly what you will be doing if you deal with this company.
The installer was very friendly. He explained everything and was very helpful. Wonderful job!!!
Great service tech
The Tech for Northstar Alarm T.J. Larson was polite and courteous. He fully explained all the details on how to work the alarm system. Before he left he walked me through everything again to make sure I understood fully how to work the keypad and keyfobs. Thanks TJ for all your help.
It's a scam
We were scammed into signing a contract with this company with the same methods seen in so many previous posts. We had the contract for over two years when the alarm went off and they called me at work. Incredibly they asked me if I wanted them to call the police.I said yes and they called me back HOURS LATER to inform me that the police would not come as we did not have a separate alarm permit on file with the city. This permit is $50 a month. I specifically asked the salesman at time of signing if such a permit was required and he said no. He lied to us. You wouldthink a person selling in a large city such as Houston would have to know these things.
I wrote a cancellation letter in March explaining that my wife’s was accruing health problems, this , combined with the increased cost of an alarm permit on top of what we pay Northstar was cost prohibitive. That the service is useless to us.They sent back a letter stating that our account would be continued until September of 2014 and gave no indication that our reasons were even taken into consideration. They could not even spell our name correctly ! Yesterday we received a message with a phone number to call”to make your payment”. These people are crooks. All they care about is the money. They are not interested in providing a service at all. Does anyone know if they have actually tried to pursue legal remedies if someone does not pay ? Our credit has already been decimated by medical bills so that is not an issue. Is there a facebook page for people that have been scammed by them ? If there isn’t I am going to start one.
No help at all
We had the misfortune to sign a contract with these people some time ago. We had the contract for a little over two years when the alarm went off and they called me at work instead of calling the police directly. They asked me if I wanted them to call the police and astonished I said yes of course. They called back hours later to inform me that the police would not respond without us having an alarm permit on file with the city of Houston. I asked the salesman at the time of signing if this was a requirement in our area and he lied to us when he said no. The permit is $50 and effectively doubles the cost of service. This plus my wife’s declining health and medical bills led me to send a letter of cancellation to Northstar last month. I carefully explained that the service is useless to us without a city required permit and outlined my wifes health problems. They sent back a letter stating that our account would be continued to the end of contract in 2014. There was no indication that they even took the reasons listed in my letter into consideration. They even spelled our name incorrectly. They are apparently used to receiving cancellation letters. All they care about is taking your money. Do not do business with these people.
Salesman said we could move alarm contract if we moved. Now northstar said we cannot move the alarm to the new house. We are out of northstar’s service area. We have been trying to cancel for 3.5 months. $700 to cancel the contract. This is absurd. We were lied to and we still have to pay. Never use this company. Complete crooks. I wish there was a way to shut them down.
This company is a scam
I was also scammed by this company and would like to warn everyone reading this to avoid NorthStar or you will be very, very unhappy. I have read the other posts and wish I would have read them two years ago, no you can learn from my mistake. NorthStar sales reps tell you anything to get you to sign up. Mine misrepresented so many parts of the “contract” that I feel I didn’t get anything he promised except the bill. Furthermore, their “customer service” is the exact opposite. They are quick to quote their complete lack of obligation to you and politely remind you that you owe them money until they say otherwise.
I’m not exagerating about that either, their contract is written so that they decide whether you can and when you can leave the cult. The apparent company rebuttal from Anais – that’s part of the show. They do the same thing through the BBB they so proudly parade in front of you. They have absolutely no intention of resolving your complaint or improving their service. They just want your money and to maintain an appearance to prospective customers that they’re leaders of the industry. They are most definitely the leading candidtate for alarm service scam artist. Don’t fear the fake alarm company that uses a sales opportunity to case your home nearly as much as you should fear and avoid these scammers. Through the guise of protection, they steal your money by misrepresenting and locking you into an obscenely bad contract.
Northstar is a ripoff
Well like many other people on here I too got scammed by North Star. My husband was convinced that it was a great deal. They promised free installation and to pay to cancel my other alarm service. When we got the system installed the tech said we could use our old sensors because they worked. That was fine with me because it was all free and if we had problems later we could get them replaced. Well here we are 6 months down the line and they want to charge us $75 for each new sensor plus a tech fee. My sensors are literally falling off but since it’s past the 90 days they won’t do anything. These sensors are 25 years old. I tried calling customer service and they just gave me the run around and then told me that the manager doesn’t take calls. How convenient. So now we are paying for an alarm system that we are unable to use. Don’t be fooled. Tell your family, friends and neighbors not to use this company!!!!!!
Auto renewed the contract
After I had fulfilled my contract with Northstar my service continued without resigning a contract. I recently moved and called and sent a letter requesting my service be discontinued, two months later I noticed that my bank account was still being debited. When I called I was informed that the contract automatically renews for 18 months. I was never informed about this when signing the contract. Now I am being ripped off by the company who was supposed to be protecting me!!! Beware when doing business with this company!!!!!
I also got ripped off by this company. The ADVERTISING DIRECTOR xxxxxx from Indianapolis came to my home and said he would REIMBURSE the fee to break my contract with my current alarm and change to Northstar. He gave me a whole lecture on how his company gave him money to allocate to just about 10 houses as advertising. He wanted us to be one of those houses and he SWORE so many times in our faces that we will get reimbursed that money. As soon as I try to contact him thought email AND phone to get paperwork ready.
His Northstar email bounced and he is not returning my calls. I have just had to pay almost $700 to get out of my old contract which was almost ending and now I got sucked into a new 5 year with this low life company. Shame on all of them. They are supposed to protect you from thieves?but unfortunately they are the biggest THIEVES of all! Thank you Northstar, thanks to you ?I DO HAVE PIECE OF MIND?(for those not familiar with them; this is their freaking slogan) By the way… that sign that has to stay in the yard for 5 years? yep, it will have an additional one right next to it. It will be fun, look for it soon all over the internet. I?m working on it!
Duped by Northstar
I got “conned” into taking over the previous homeowners contract. I learned as I read throught the posts to the site, this happens all too often and the new person has to sign a 60 month contract, too!?!? We were told two days before closing on our house that we had to sign a contract with Northstar or they would come to rip out the equipment. Since a functioning alarm system was one of the reasons we were buying the house, I made the call. We’ve been in the house a year and a half. Not too many problems until just recently… we had a new front and patio door installed. I called NorthStar tech support to request someone to come and make the updates to the sensors. Sure they said, we’ll have the tech call you to set up the appointment.
He did and while he was not on time the first time he came, he did do reasonable work and did a good job on the second time he came out. The shock was the $80 fee that we were being charged for the service call – at no time when I was on the phone with tech support setting up this appointment was I told there would be a fee! I first learned of it when the accoutning office called to say that we hadn’t “paid” the fee – I questioned “what fee” and they said they would send an invoice with the details. That was in mid-October and I still haven’t seen an invoice. While on perpetual hold for tech support – the service person who was at my house last week was on hold for 1/2 hour before giving up – I heard that if you have monitoring contract, you have a “lifetime service protection agreement” and the trip fee is only $35. What they don’t do ANYWHERE on their lovely website is define “lifetime service protection agreement”. Makes it kinda hard to know what charges to expect when they send out a service person.
We have been having issues with our glass break detectors – we have 4 that are on the same “zone” so I had to get “elevated” to level 2 tech support. Our options are they can MAYBE rewire the boxes into separate zones – which would be a no cost – or they would have to replace them entirely – at $70 each – which is their “cost”. UGH – $280 to replace glass break detectors that aren’t working?!? Shouldn’t that be covered under my 5 year contract?!?!?!?!
No response to the complaint I emailed to service yesterday. Will see if ANYONE addresses my issues to a satisfactory level. I would NEVER renew my contract with them and if there were anyway to get out of it, I would. I would NEVER recommend them to ANYONE – even my worst enemy, as their customer service is NON-EXISTENT.
Very disappointing service
I was saitsfied with my alarm system and service from North Star for the first couple of years I had the service. However, I recently was re-budgeting and cutting costs where possible, and decided to switch my internet service to another company. When I did, I also disconnected my home phone service since we didn’t ever use the home phone, it was only there because our internet was through them. I never thought twice about it since the guys (and gal) who sold me the alarm promised I did NOT need to have a land line to have their service. Within a few days of the land line being removed, I started to get error messages and beeps from the alarm system. When I called, I was informed that North Star could no longer monitor my home because the land line had been removed. I explained I was told that the land line was not necessary and that was the only reason I agreed to sign a contract with them. At that point, and this was the first time I had heard this, I was told I had to have special equipment if I wanted to have the service. Now get this – I have to purchase the additional equipment – at the low low price of a few hundred dollars… (that’s a lot of money to most people, including me) AND my service was going to go up at least $5 per month.
Hold on a minute! When I was sold this equipment and contract, I was never told any of this – NOR is it in my contract anywhere. No one can prove that this information was told to me. NOR does it say specifically in my contract that I must have a land line connected and operational in order for the service to function properly.
So not only do I have to purchase more equipment, I have to pay another monthly bill (minimum $20-25/mo for a land line, I also have to pay more per month for my monthly service. That’s a whole lot more per month than the contract said I would be charged. Oh, and furthermore, they want to tell me I can’t cancel because I’m under a 5 year contract.
People, please – don’t sign a contract with this company. They are scamming people left and right. I should have known better when someone came knocking on my door… Remember – you get what you pay for. A reputable company will NOT come knocking on your door. Good, reputable companies don’t sell products that way anymore. I advise not to buy anything from a door to door salesperson!!
Oh, and I will make sure the contract is released since it was fraudulent from the beginning. If I can’t do it on my own, I’m sure I can get an attorney to take care of that. Ridiculous that it has to get to this level!
Contract is a joke
Renewed our contract with Northstar, what a mistake! One term of contract was for tech. to completely check out our system as we have had the service for 3 years prior. System may not even be working properly and have had some errors on the monitor panel. Tech has not shown up yet. Have been waiting for 4 months! Paying our monthly monitoring fee and our system may not even be working. Customer service is sooooo unprofessional. Have been waiting for the office supervisor for 3 days now to finish her meetings and call us back regarding the poor service. Office customer service personell are very rude and do not help resolve our concerns.
I checked with the Better Business Bureau and Northstar Alarm is (not) an accredited company in their system. Hmmmmm I wonder why? I will call the supervisor everday for 1000 years until my service concerns are resolved! Northstar Alarm customer service has proven to be very unprofessional and does not convey any indication that the company cares about its customers or is capable in providing the services its customers pays them for! I would strongly NOT rec. this company to anyone!
Very professional employees
Dale D. P. just finished a repair job on my alarm system. There have been several tries in the past 6 months to fix this problem. He took less than 30 minutes to fix and test the system. His knowledge of the system helped him to spot the problem immediately. He was extremely neat, buisiness like and answered all the questions I had. It is nice to know he is on guard here in Colorado. The NorthStar Alarm Company has one heck of an ambassador for the company
Very helpful tech
My technician, Hiram T., was punctual, competent, and knowledgable. He was able to diagnose the problem in a timely manner and fix it. Not only that but he was very courteous and understanding. I was very pleased with the service and outcome.
System was installed by Josh S. who was very professional and completed the job in a timely manner.
All questions were answered.
Pretty good overall
I have no experience with other companies but I have been with NS since 2007. The salesman was a young guy who told me what I needed to know, if he couldn’t answer a question he verified the answer immediately. I signed a 5 year contract, had a few false alarms (my fault) that were reported to me immediately by NS. I have a tech in today and I am adding about $600 worth of equipment (9 door/window sensors, 2 motion detectors, another smoke detector, a wall fob, and placing a few of the older sensors in different locations). I can’t compare NS to anyone else but they have been very satisfactory and I would never have added equipment if I didn’t feel they were doing their job. Are there occassional problems with CS doing their job? Sometimes there is, where is there 100% CS satisfaction. Last, I am a school janitor not a company rep but I think good things should be told about companies as well as the bad. On a scale of 1-10 I would rate my experience at least a 7.5 perhaps even an 8.5, that’s my review.
They are truly the worst
Northstar Alarm Services is a horrible company. The door to door salesperson did not disclose the 5 year contract requirement. We have spent the past 2 years fighting with the customer service dept. and paying for an alarm system that we don’t use. Does anyone know if there is any way out of this? This is such a deceitful company. Surely, someone can do something about this. There are way too many complaints that can be found by a simple web search. I offered to compromise and pay half of the contract (b/c I know I was a fool for not asking more questions). We thought half of the money would just make them go away. But, it is not. Any ideas???
Always the best service
We were very pleased with the service that we received from this company. Both the representative, Jay D. and the installer, Nate were very professional. They took the time to answer all of our questions and address our concerns. They demonstrated how to use the new keypad system. They also made sure that the whole system had new batteries and everything was working correctly. They even found a way to save us a little money each month. We would recommend this company to our neighbors and friends.
Great service techs
Just got my alarm system installed here in Okla. City. The Rep. Nate B. was very nice and polite, and answered all of my questions. He took the time to explain everything in detail. The installer Aaron M. did a great job on installation. His work was excellent, he was polite and a pleasure to be around. He too, took the time to insure I understood how my alarm system work and walked my thru each step of its function. I would gladly deal with these two fine young men again.
We had the Northstar alarm system sold to us by Jordan and installed by Clark S. and Mike S. All of these were very professional and carefully explained the system to us. All were very courteous and neat in appearance. We reside in North Little Rock, Arkansas.
Way to go
Michael M. S. did a great job !!!!!!!
