The day after Halloween is like a hangover for your house. Chocolate has melted on the couch, candle wax has dripped onto the carpet, gum has stuck to floors. What’s a homeowner to do?
First, don’t let Halloween filth last until Thanksgiving. The sooner you wipe and scrape messes the less they will stain. Here are more tips on how to clean up after Halloween.
Chocolate Stains on Carpet:
Gently scrape or brush off the dried chocolate your child dropped, taking care not to push chocolate deeper into carpet fibers. Dilute the stain with cold water, blotting not rubbing with a microfiber cleaning cloth; then gently scrub with a little laundry detergent. If that fails, while the carpet is still wet place two paper towels over the stain, then top with a tray weighed down with books. In an hour or so, the towels will suck up the stain. Repeat the process until the stain is completely gone.
Melted Wax on Floors:
When wax dries on wood floors, scrape it up with the edge of a credit card or plastic spatula, then remove the residue with floor polish. To remove wax on carpets, freeze it with a cold pack or ice, shatter the frozen wax and vacuum up pieces. If wax remains, place a clean, lint-free cloth over the wax, and press a medium-hot iron onto the cloth. The wax will melt and adhere to the cloth.
Eggs on Siding:
Before the sun bakes the eggs that neighborhood kids threw at your house, gently wet with a garden hose, then spray below and above the mess, which will wash the egg away in sheets.
If your Halloween stickers won’t pull off easily, soak them with rubbing alcohol (vodka works too!), then scrape with a plastic spatula.
Pumpkin Guts on Counters:
Separate the seeds from the guts, then wipe stringy, slippery pumpkin guts with a paper towel, and spray and wipe counters with equal parts white vinegar and water. Wash the seeds, toss with a little melted butter and pinch of salt, and roast in a 300-degree oven for about 45 minutes or until they turn golden brown.
Vacuum glitter, then press masking tape over the spot to pick up stray sparkles.
