Frontpoint vs. Vivint: Home Security Comparison

The home security industry is quickly evolving as more and more homeowners look for a solution that will not only help them secure and protect their home but automate it as well. Two alarm companies who recognized the growing interest adopted radically different approaches to achieve the same goal: a safe home security and automation system that is at the cutting edge today – and will remain relevant and functional well into the future.

Vivint Security

Originally known as APX Alarm Security Solutions when it was started in 1999 and quickly grew to national prominence (and infamy) for their use of an aggressive door-to-door sales force to market their professionally-installed systems. Today, the company still relies on face-to-face sales to help expand their customer base but they’re more well-known for their innovative and award-winning proprietary equipment. Designed and developed by their own R&D division, these products have pushed the limits of what a home security system can do, including integrations with many 3rd party devices.

Frontpoint

Began much more recently but has also grown to be recognized nationally as one of the best home security system options available. Unlike traditional alarm companies, Frontpoint has refined and brought DIY home security very near to perfection. Frontpoint developed a best-of-breed security solution with equipment from GE and QolSys supported by software from Alarm.com. Frontpoint delivers a flexible and expandable home security system capable of supporting both current and future security and automation equipment and functions.

Below we take an in-depth look at these two well-regarded companies to understand their differences, their similarities and ultimately which one emerges as the winner in this head-to-head comparison.

Key Differences: Vivint vs Frontpoint Security

Contracts

With but a few notable exceptions, homeowners who add a professionally monitored home security system to their house will need to sign a service contract. Many of the conditions and terms included in these contracts are standard across the home security industry. But when comparing Frontpoint and Vivint’s agreements, the length of the contract is one important difference worth noting. Frontpoint’s contract length is for 36 months which is typical of most in long-term contracts in the alarm space. Vivint’s contract length(s) are some of the longest in the industry and can run from 42 months up to 60 months. We cannot stress the importance of reading and thoroughly understanding your home security agreement –especially with a professionally installed system that doesn’t include a trial period like Vivint.

Reputation/ Sales

Vivint has had to weather a storm of negativity as a result of their door-to-door approach to marketing and sales. Complaints from customers detail issues with overly aggressive or poorly trained representatives to outright and deliberately deceitful tactics. Despite this blemish on an otherwise well respected provider, the company continues to utilize this marketing force. Comparatively, Frontpoint’s sales philosophy is markedly different. Opting to maintain tight controls over the sales experience, Frontpoint employs a team of highly trained security consultants in their corporate office. With no 3rd party salesmen or dealers, Frontpoint is able to consistently provide a more positive and healthy relationship with consumers and customers alike.

Installation

A major difference between these two providers is their approach to the implementation of their security system. Both companies use wireless equipment for their systems, but Vivint has opted for the more traditional approach of professional installation while Frontpoint has adopted the increasingly more common self-setup model. Vivint customers must schedule an appointment to have a Vivint technician setup their security and automation system. While many homeowners may feel more confident their system is setup properly by having a professional on site, they may be losing more than they gain. Frontpoint has made home security incredibly simple, more convenient and more customer-friendly with their DIY approach. With their self-setup model, Frontpoint is able to offer customers several advantages over traditional systems. First, customers don’t have to wait for an available slot for their install appointment, they can set the system up the moment it arrives at their home – or at any time that’s convenient for them. Second, and perhaps most important, because Frontpoint doesn’t have the added cost burden of sending personnel to the home, they can afford to give customers a full 30-day risk free trial – a huge advantage for consumers who like to try before they buy.

Technology

With their own in-house Research and Development group, Vivint has been able to design and release some of the most innovative equipment in the home security industry over the past few years. Most recently, the company has earned awards and industry accolades for their doorbell camera and cloud service capabilities. Beyond equipment, Vivint’s platform has evolved to integrate with popular 3rd party smart home devices like the Nest Learning Thermostat and Amazon Echo. All of this showing a clear indication the company is intent on maintaining their position at the forefront of the convergence between home security and automation

Frontpoint adopted a different approach by establishing strategic partnerships with leading equipment and technology providers rather than internalizing these specializations. As a result, Frontpoint is able to leverage the expertise of their partners in providing cutting-edge technologies and equipment while maintaining their primary focus on customer experience. Recent additions to their product lineup such as their image sensor and new touch-screen control panel as well as newly announced compatibilities with Amazon Echo and Apple TV through their Alarm.com demonstrate Frontpoint’s desire to continue to evolve with consumer interests while maintaining focused on delivering better, smarter security options.

Frontpoint vs Vivint Comparison Break Down

Company Reputation

Winner: Frontpoint

Frontpoint continues to dominate this category regardless of who we compare them to – and for good reason. Take a look at any review or community site that covers home security and you’ll see a very clear and consistent trend among Frontpoint customers. They’re either heaping praise on the company or, if they do have an issue or complaint, Frontpoint representatives are quick to reach out to the customer and do whatever they can to help resolve the issue to the customer’s satisfaction. Vivint’s reputation has seemed to improve over the past year, but they still have a lot of ground to recover in order to challenge the number one spot, a position which Frontpoint seems unwilling to relinquish to any challenger.

Pricing

Winner: Frontpoint

Setting comparable packages side-by-side as we’ve done above shows the relative parity between Vivint and Frontpoint when it comes to pricing. However when you consider the monthly monitoring rate required, Frontpoint manages to pull into the lead. Factor in the length of the contract and Vivint’s additional 12 – 24 month requirement leaves little doubt that they’re a more costly option for home security and automation.

Service

Winner: Frontpoint

Vivint’s ability to deliver face-to-face service should give them an edge in this category. Unfortunately, as we’ve mentioned previously, ongoing consumer and customer complaints stemming from their door-to-door marketing representatives continues to be a blemish on an otherwise stellar provider. Frontpoint, by design and action, continues to set the standard when it comes to customer experience and service. Since inception, the company has made trust and excellence core values.

Ease of Installation

Winner: Draw

Frontpoint has made setting up a home security system as simple as possible – more so than any other DIY provider we’ve seen. But, it’s also hard to argue against the ease of setup with VIvint’s professional technicians taking on the task.  But, professional installation also requires scheduling an appointment and being home for the technician – a completely avoidable situation with a system you can setup on your own.

Equipment & Technology

Winner: Vivint

We’ve made no secret of our appreciation for Frontpoint’s best-of-breed approach when it comes to their systems, but Vivint wins this category for obvious reasons. From their industry-leading and award-winning proprietary equipment to their platform’s ever expanding list of compatible and integrated 3rd party smart devices, Vivint is leading the charge into the connected home world for the entire home security industry.

The Overall Winner: Frontpoint

Vivint has been instrumental in helping push the home security industry forward toward being the primary platform and entrance point for homeowners seeking a connected home. With award-winning technology and expanding integration and compatibility we have no doubt that Vivint is and will continue to be a leader in both home security and home automation. That being said, Frontpoint continues to impress by maintaining their zealous focus on their customers experience.

As Vivint continues to improve where they fell short and Frontpoint’s technology partners continue to evolve, we expect these two companies to continually challenge one another to do better. We look forward to comparing them again head to head next year. No matter who comes out on top, we’re certain customers of either company will come out as winners.
