But if not, don’t worry – you can still participate by using this handy resource guide to check your own emergency preparedness plan and make sure you’re ready to act to keep yourself, your home and your family safe during an emergency.

1. The Basics of Emergency Preparedness

These are the foundations of your emergency preparedness plan and are absolutely essential to you and your family’s safety. Be sure you’ve got the following in place right now. Once you’ve got the basics in place, you can augment and supplement to make sure you’re ready to handle specific emergencies and natural disasters.

Emergency Kit

Make sure you’ve got everything you’ll need for yourself and your family when disaster strikes. Read our extensive guide to building an emergency kit for your family. And don’t forget your pets! Communication Plan

Essential to your ability to stay in touch with family, make sure to download and complete the family emergency plan form from Ready.gov. Print several copies. Complete them and store them in a safe location.
