Recent Customer Review For X-10 Security:
This X-10 Security review has been submitted by a former or present X-10 customer.  Although X-10 does not offer central station monitoring, they do offer wireless security systems that you can install and monitor yourself.  That is, you can program the equipment to dial a certain number (your cell phone or pager, for example) in the event of an alarm.  Keep in mind that the home security systems X-10 sells cannot be monitored by a regular alarm company.  Camera systems are also available.

If you have had a good or bad experience with X-10 security equipment, please submit your review!  Reviews are only edited for spam and/or vulgar language. Thanks for submitting!

I have installed five X-10 Powerhouse security systems so far.

I buy and sell houses. I install these systems when a house will be unoccupied for a while. I have also self-installed an Ademco Vista-21ip hybrid.

The X10 is dirt-cheap. Most of the houses required only $80 of equipment, shipping included. When I sell a house, I abandon the system in-place, using it as a selling point. Typically I install a door/window sensor at each door and window, one infrared, and a Powerhorn siren in the garage. I buy the optional wall mount and install the main unit UPSIDE DOWN under a kitchen cabinet at eye level. This is so the main unit is less visible.

I originally tried to use the flashing light feature but X10 only sells dimmable wall switches and the smooth turn-on and turn-off transition did not seem like something that would scare burglars. The main unit is highly vulernable. A intruder only needs to follow the siren and smash the unit to disable. That's why I install two sirens: for indirection. And that's why I install the unit upside down.

One system has already paid for itself. At one of the houses in a bad neighborhood, someone broke in through the door. They turned on some lights and unplugged the main unit but did not destroy it. I did not have the phone line hooked up so it did not dial me. When I next visited the house, I found the backup batteries dead but very little damage to the house. Later the locals smashed a window which did not set off the alarm.

Overall the X10 is great for the price.

Update:
My experience has been over the course of a year with five systems. No change in opinion here.
