Reviews For Slomin's Shield Home Security:
(Added Jan 10/12) Do not sign a 5 year term contract with SLOMINS as they will sue at the drop of hat. Their contract is not clear and they will easily sue for any money they feel are owed and will make your life miserable.  Stay Away from this company at all costs! Lost job but still made payment until last two periods. Offered to finally pay monitor and lawyer fee...still suing for that amount plus all equipment that was installed in 1998. 13 years ago!. There are many much better alarm companies out there. S T A Y A W A Y!!!
(Added Dec 19/11) I am very pleased with Slomins. Anytime I had any issues they were here in days. When my contract ended, they did not harass me with calls to re-new. I just recently decided to renew for another 5 years and they gave me great upgrades FREE. no gimics. Their representatives are so profesional that come to your house. The installers are very porfessional as well.
(Added Dec 16/11) Beware of signing any 5 year term contracts, unless you have an attorney available to sift through all the B.S. Slomins will nail you to the wall if you are unable to pay due to a job loss or whatever.  Even if you were a customer for 12 years, does not matter.  Beware!
(Added Nov 2/11) Have had slomin's for over 10 years. Very little problems until lately.  Over the last year we have had several (8) false alarms and are now being fined by our local police for them, $50 each.  Slomin's says it is not there problem, and that there is nothing wrong with our system and refuse to look into the matter.  We have asked that they add at least two contacts to our phone list before contacting the police. They refused.  The alarm hasn't been working very well for the last couple of years, we always have to shunt out something to get it to work at all. We understand there are much better alarm systems that can be monitored by personal computers and mobile devises. Our contract runs out this year and will not be renewed unless problem resolved.  I would rather call the police myself after I have checked the home monitors, cameras, sound detectors and motion detectors by my phone or computer, whether I am home or away.
(Added Oct 27/11) Slomin's have the worse customer service policy. They got me to sign in for their services, and they told me I had to pay 3 months advanced services. They also mentioned that the State will send me a bill for Police services in case of a buglary. I never heard from them for an entire month for installation and I had to call almost every day to try to get an appointment for installation. After almost 2 months they came to my house and informed me that I needed to pay more and change my contract because they cannot provide me the services I had initially signed for since my house what not designed for their services. I did not want to go ahead with them any longer so I asked to cancel the contract for a refund. They did not was to give me the refund and stated that it was used to get me a State permit "which I never received" and is non-refundable unless the State refunds them. Their contract is nothing to go by. RUN FAR AWAY from their services. In my opinion they need a change of management or the business needs to be shut down.
(Added Sep 1/11) Description of Complaint: Call in to ask a question nicely. 1) Before completing the question. The male employee just answer "no" with a attitude. and He continues to argue and not listening to my question. Then he refuges to give his last name. 2) Call back again to see if I can talk to any employee. This times is a female employee. After answering my question with an attitude, she hangs up. Never seen an company with such bad customer service.
(Added Aug 14/11) We have had Slomin's over 5 years and plan to remain a customer. We have only had 1 problem and that was with the smoke alarm, it went off for no reason. Slomin's came out with 3 days and fixed it. They are great. I have no complaints at all.
(Added July 4/11) I have been a slomans home alarm customer for a few months. The service I receive is absolutly deplorable.  If you need a repair appointment it takes a week or more. we had a nappointment for work that was scheduled for eight days from the request. The day before the appointment we got a call that it would be yet another week for the service call. In my opinion they really are below par.
The 5 year contract is a real ploy and should be avoided at all cost.
Sloamins responses here I feel lack factual rebuttals for the customer complaints submitted.
(Added Jan 26/11) I have Slomins for almost 8 months now. I haven't had any problems with them. My alarm went off twice when we weren't home, both times cops came to the house. I am ok with them so far. No Equipment problems either. Hope it stays this way.
(Added Jan 12/11) (Slomin's Employee) Slomin's Central Station Monitoring center is staffed by trained Slomin's personnel to respond to your home security system's signal 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Your safety comes first. Unlike some home security companies, we provide our Central Station Monitoring Service ONLY for Slomin's customers, not for customers of other home security companies. Slomin's personnel are carefully trained and experienced in appropriate home security procedures, and know exactly how to respond to any home security situation. Our Central Station Monitoring has been certified and is listed by Underwriters Laboratories. UL has developed more than 800 Standards for Safety.
(Added Jan 12/11) Here's an interesting complaint.  When the salesman came to my house and I signed my contract, he gave me a "contact" sheet to complete.  This was for the numbers I wanted contacted for my local police, fire and ambulance.  My village is 3 square miles.  We have a 24/7 police department, which I'm employed in.  Of course I filled out this form with my police department phone number.  The first time my alarm went off and I wasn't home, I received a prompt phone call from Slomin's stating that my alarm was activated and that they notified the police.  I then called my police department to advise them that I was almost home.  They never received a call.  I then called back to Slomin's.  Slomin's told me that they notified the State Police.  The closest State Police barracks at the time was 10 miles away.  When asked why they didn't notify my local PD, they explained that "It's Slomin's corporate policy to notify the closest State Police, not a local PD".  It took three "Supervisors" and numerous attempts to cancel my service, to get this changed.  I have since come across other residents in my little village who have had the same problem.  Why would you not want the closest PD to respond?  Is someone in Slomin's an ex-State Police member?  As soon as my contract is up, they're gone.
(Added Dec 30/10) I found out that Slomins does not provide emergency service for its alarms during holiday weeks.  So I have no coverage. Company will not honor request until next week.  That's no peace of mind for security services. Looks like the equipment they supply can be faulty and needs maintenance constantly. When I call in I find the reps are rude, defensive and could care less about your problem (they have their own to worry about.) Don't bet your life on Slomins.  They do not deserve consideration and certainly not a five year contract.
(Added Nov 15/10) I have had the Slomins Sheild for 6 years and my Mom for 4 years and we have never had a problem with the system or the service at Slomins.  They are a great family owned business and take pride in customer service.  As for getting a dog for home sercurity not a good idea as I read mentioned !!  Slomins charges 28.45 for monitoring for a basic package not 100.00.  After 5 years you own your equipment and you qualify for a whole bunch of upgrades.  Stop whinning.. Try ADT and pay for 1500.00 of equipment and 49.99 a month for monitoring that they outsoruce where slomins has their own central station.
(Added Oct 13/10) Oh my god the whining!! From the customers who never bothered to read their contracts and the term 5 YEARS does appear several times on the contract in bold letters. What happened to entering into a contact in good faith. Those customers who ask all sorts of odd questions are the type of people who are always looking for an "out". You write a check for 3 months of monitoring-oh and it is NOT $100 a month. It's less than a $100 a quarter...Slomin's sends in an highly trained installer in an expensive to operate van, filled with expensive equipment to install security in your home. And what has Slomin's got for their work? $100 and the good faith that their bills will be paid! Liens??? A customer is asked for proof of ownership on the home to make sure that Slomin's is not locking the rightful owner out of his own home.  So stop whining and grow up you people and the guy with all the inside info on the family and how they do not own the business...check your sources.
(Added Sept 26/10) We had Slomins install our security system about 7 years ago.  Due to no one in the house actually setting the alarm we decided to terminate our business with them once our contract reached it's term.  Here's where the problem began.  Whenever we had a power outage, usually due to storms...the alarm system would go off.  Despite us ending the contract with Slomin,  the alarm system would still work as an alarm system, without being hooked into a security network.  Later we began having weird episodes with the system going off.  We called Slomin and they would not help us deal with our situation.  After all, we are no longer their customer.  I've also recently tried to have someone from their office pay a service call, to dismantling the system, because we are now unable to stop the siren from going off, without it being provoked by a power outage. Slomin would not help, because we no longer have a contract with us.  We are now stuck with our circuit breaker off in order to shut off the system.  Unfortunately, we are also shutting off all the downstairs lights in the process.  We are doing this until we get an electrician over to remedy our problem.  Before anyone hires a security company, they need to find out what happens after they terminate their service with the company.  Otherwise they can be listening to sirens going off three in the morning from their brief power outage.  That was something that never occured in our mind to ask.

(Added Aug 25/10) Do not choose Slomin's!  They are a rip-off and don't fall for thier false advertising.  When you have a problem, they are not there to help.  I have been paying ~$90 per month for about fifteen years and the company still wants to charge me $1200 to discontinue service since they insist that the damage to their system is result of some sort of electrical storm (although I've had no other problems with electrical in my home). They insisted that I needed to upgrade the system and sign a new agreement. The "new" system that I signed on for is just as worthless as the old one.  That was the mistake I made with this company.  When you have faulty equipment installed in your home, it can be really annoying.  The new system alarm sounds beeped for no reason and so most of the time I could not use it so most of the time I left it off. The maintenance agreement is a the scam here--they will make you pay for the defective parts and continue to expect you to pay for monitoring service even if it doesn't work.  Defects in the system or the way the installer put it in caused problematic/annoying beeping that was no result of an intrusion.
(Added Aug 17/10) I've had a reasonable relationship with Slomins, but deactivated the system after losing my job and fulfilling my contract requirements.  The other night at 4:30AM, the alarm went off and we were able to silence it.  The outside strobe is still flashing and I can't get Slomins to explain how to turn it off. Their reply was to look in our owners manual which we don't have.  I can't find a manual and they won't explain how to turn the strobe off unless we sign a new contract.  Can anyone out there help please.
(Added July 11/10) Do not use Slomins Shield if you actually want security!!  I'm locked into a 3yr contract with a company who failed at least 3times to call me when alarm was activated.  (and I mean alarm goes off for at least 3minutes-they require 30-60sec) I had the alarm installed because my ex is prime suspect for muti murders, I fear for my life, not from burglars!....how safe do I feel when my alarm company FAILS to do their job?!  When I call & complain they say "we sent a test signal and all is fine" guess it's all a figment of my imagination!
(Added June 24/10) Slomin's salemen lie about the 5 year clause in their contract! When you ask what if you move or die are you responsible for the rest of the contract they tell you no problem just give them the name of the new owners by certified mail. Not so! They send you bills, then they get a collection attorney to get a summary judgement against you. Do not sign any contract with Slomin Security, you will not even get an opportunity to to go to court and have your case heard. New Jersey.
(Added June 2/10) Slomin's is one big rip off from the sales representative to the customer service.  I have never dealt with a company like this that gives out so much misinformation, they have you pay for a service and cash your check even before they've made an appointment, then they finally give you an appointment that nobody shows up to or even call you about. The company doesn't have a clue as to what they are doing.  They had me pay for a permit to do the work and they refused to give me a refund for a job that they never did, and then tell me that I'll have to go back to the permit company for a refund even though their sales rep had me go and get it in the first place.  I would never ever recommend this company to anyone. They are terrible and so are their customer service reps and their sale representatives.  To all out there beware of Slomin's.  Very very unsatisfied customer.
(Added June 1/10) Read the fine print. Free installation means you are stuck w/them for several years - making monthly payments.  Whole house alarms are not easy/convenient to use. If you have a big home w/several occupants coming and going - things like kids coming home late, people walking around at nite trip motion sensors when raiding the fridge or going potty etc. They are truly more trouble than they are worth. While alarms systems may give peace of mind in practiccal terms, not sure how much they really protect you.  After 5 long years - we were finally able to terminate contract! Now, the alarm constantly trips and they will not speak to us or help us AT ALL because we are no longer a customer! I told them its their equip - just tell us how to turn it off.  I may as well have been asking for a refund - NO CHANCE.  Just bad business.  We won't do business w/them again and would not recommend them.  Save your money - get a dog!
(Added May 18/10) (Updated Sept 10/10) Do not choose Slomin's!  They advertise FREE security system with a five year contract but it's not free.  I have been paying $100 per month for two and a half years and the company still wants to charge me $1100 to discontinue service since unforeseen and unfortunate circumstances have caused us to have to move.  They told me that the situation does not matter and they need the $1100 (or $595 settlement fee) to cover the cost of the equipment that does not even work.  The alarm sounds for no reason and causes the police to show up and have us drop whatever we are doing to rush home for no reason.  The first time they attemped to fix the problem, they found nothing wrong with it.  The second time they came to fix the problem, they said they fixed it but they didn't because it's still malfunctioning.  The police then tell us that if they come by one more time for a false alarm, we will be fined.  And now Slomin's wants us "to cover the cost of the equipment".
Update:
Slomin's has not resolved the issue.
(Added Apr 30/10) So I read and read and read all of the negative (comments) on Slomin's Shield and say to myself "why? why O why O why?".   Has any one ever worked with these guys? Let me tell you something, this is a class A organization. These guys do everything in house and when I mean in house I mean in house. Alarms are installed by Slomin's Shield techs and thei vp ***** is a 25 yr plus vet. They are family owned for like 100 yrs.  They hire their own salespeople, train them send them out to custom design an alarm to your home.  I worked with them in the Philadelphia market several years ago on their media buy and got to know these guys 1st hand. They protect my home and they should be your 1st choice in home security. A++ slomins.
(Added Mar 4/10) Do Your Research! Slomins is the best. Their sales people are the most knowledgeable. They don't say what you just want to hear. They are honest! The service technicians are professional. There are no gimmicks. I am renewing my contract for another 5-years, and as a result, Slomins is giving me a free upgrade, which includes doing 6 bedroom windows and remotes For free!  Whenever I have called in the past, their customer service is so helpful. When I needed a service call, they arrived promptly and did what needed to be done!
(Added Feb 16/10) It's been almost 6 months since I signed up with Slomin's and paid for a radio freq transmitter (I don't have a land line). I'm still waiting to receive the transmitter. They've scheduled and cancelled multiple times saying its on back order. If this is how they're handling installation then I have no confidence in their monitoring. Take your business elsewhere.
(Added Feb 13/10) Slomins is A++. Gave me a free system and installation, (the charge is) $25.15/month for police being called. Did everything online and was installed in 2 days. Contract is for 5 yrs but they really are a good deal.
(Added Nov 24/09) We have had Slomins now for two years on our new home.  I do not even want to talk about the craziness that went on with our oil contract.  This company is a bunch of B.S. artists.  Now onto the Alarm system...we have had it for two years and have had nothing but trouble with the (motion) sensor inside the house.  We cannot even set it because of our cats.  They said there is a pet friendly zone.  That is bull****.  Everytime I ask to get someone to come to the house to fix it they say it will be 98.00 for a call.  I am not paying this freaking money anymore.  They come and nothing gets fixed...More problems.  You think they would be apologetic but no.  Our oil contract is cancelled with them and when the 5 years is up so will our alarm company.  They are a bunch of scam artists who just want your money and they do not care that the economy is struggling.   Do not go with this company.  Slomins does not care about the everyday person just the money in their pocket.
(Added July 17/09) I sold my house and moved to another state that is not serviced by Slomin's. I provided the name of the new owners, sent a letter registered to cancel the account, after all they are supplying security at a house with a new owner and... am now being harassed for $945.00 termination fee. This company needs to be investigated for unethical practices! I filed a complaint with the BBB and feel they should be investigated by the New York attorney general because they are perpatrating a scam, as once they are in the door you can't get rid of them. SHAME ON YOU SLOMIN'S.  I'm not playing!
(Added June 10/09) When I originally moved into my house in Brick, NJ, It was set up with a Slomin's security system. I decided to activate it and called Slomin's who sent a salesman out to talk with us. He explained that we had most of the equipment, but added that we should have a security panel (i.e. keypad) in the bedroom and three key chain alarm switches. I also told me it would be a two-year contract and that the extra equipment was part of the contract quarterly payments. I recently acquired about monitoring without a home phone line since we are not using it, we use cell phones now only. I was told that the system doesn't work without a land line and I would still have to make payments. I also found out it is a 5-year contract and that canceling it would cost more then the five years of payments. I am VERY upset with the conflictions of what I was told by their salesman and what the actual contract was. I was lied too, and I feel this was intentional and part of a deceiving sales pitch. The only positive relation I have had with this company was the technician who set up the bedroom keypad and showed us how to use the system.
(Added May 27/09) I signed a 5 year contract, but moved 3-1/2 years into it.  I moved within the Slomins monitoring area and requested that they just change the number on my acct. and continue the current contract.  They want to charge me a ridiculous fee and sign on for another 5 years.  Or cancel the contract for $800.  In this economy they can afford to just lose customers like that?  Terrible customer service! Stay away from Slomins!!!

(Added ApriI 24/09) (Updated Aug 5/09) I can't wait to get rid of Slomins alarm system.  The d*** alarm has been going off every half hour since Friday night.  A call to the company is useless.  They keep telling me that their technicians don't work on weekends!  We have to wait until Tuesday.  They did let slip that if I had a previously scheduled appt. for Saturday someone would come.   But since that is not the case no one is available.  What kind of company is this?  They are supposed to provide service 24/7.  This was the little detail that they hid during their sales pitch.  The only service that Slomins did offer was a walkthrough.  I should get a Philips screwdriver and power down the system.  How helpful.  You have been forwarned.
Update:
The problem was resolved.  However, this incident shows a real defect in customer service.  Fortunately, I was able to disable the alarm until help came.  Customers should get immediate service, not a wait over a long weekend. We will carefully review if we want to keep this service.

(Added Jan 11/09) (Updated May 27/09) Do not buy Slomins. It is impossible to cancel once you have met your contract terms. They send you to their "cancellation department" which ironically has no direct dial and never answers the phone. Once you do get thru to someone, they require "their form" to cancel, which of course they don't send out for weeks. When I mailed in their cancellation form they said they never received it and have continued billing me, despite the fact that I am owed a refund. Slomins is a typical scam of a company; you've been warned.
Update:
I researched this company on the internet and found they had numerous complaints with the Better Business Bureau. I too filed a complaint with the BBB and, thru the use of one of their mediators, was able to resolve this matter to my satisfaction. My distrust of this company remains and I do not think I would have seen any resolution but for this company not wanting any further complaints to be lodged and remain unresolved with the BBB.
(Added Jan 6/09) (Updated Mar 2/09) Slomin's is the worst alarm company I have encountered. 5 year contracts that cost more to cancel than to live out the life of the contract. BUYER BEWARE!!! Customer Service told me I could cancel on Jan. 2, 2009 (a few years back) so I just called and they said that I can't cancel without paying over $800. They say it's due to the free equipment they installed. Free? I had a sizable bill after they finished installation. PLEASE people read the contract before going with Slomin's. I don't even live in this house anymore and I have to provide alarm service for my tenants or pay this ridiculous cancelation fee.
Update:
Still paying for an alarm I don't want.
(Added Jan 1/09) I'm not sure why some of the reviews on this site say that Slomins alarm systems don't work over cable phones or other voip providers, but they do. I also am not sure why anyone would complain about signing a five year contract you're told it's a five year contract and at the end of your contract the system is yours unlike some other companies. If you have a problem with your system or your installation you should ask to speak with a manager or have one come out to your home they will do everything possible to correct your problem. I know this because I used to be a manager for this company, and it was our policy.

(Added Nov 22/08) Some of these reviews are ridiculous! First of all, Fact:Slomin's IS family owned, and has been since 1923!! Fact: the equipment used by Slomins is cutting edge and up to all industry standards. Fact: Slomin's employees are thoroughly trained and experienced in all aspects of their jobs. Ive had a slomins system for 12 years and have never had a single problem. Installation was neat and clean, service extremely efficient and their customer service is extraordinary!

(Added Oct 6/08) The Slomin's alarm that I had installed last year really paid off last week when someone tried to break in to my house, and apparently ran away when the alarm went off.  They broke my door but thankfully didn't take anything.  Thank you Slomin's for everything.
