Terrible, terrible company. The reps actually ARGUE with you. God awful. |
(Added Jan 10/12) Most customers who complain are those who did not read the contract all the way through. Unfortounately, and cant take the responsiblity for not doing so. The very First line in the contract states its an initial 3 yr term that renews by the successive one year there after. Further in the contract it also states you should test your system monthly. So if your having issues with your system but your not following what it states in the contract you cant be mad at anyone other than yourself. You know about when you signed your contract. The second you decide to cancel and your close to your contract date then send in your cancel letter. I had service with them its in black in white and those complaining i guess never learned to read. What can you expect? |
(Added Jan 10/12) I would not recommend that anyone deal with protect america. I started out with a land line and it appeared to work alright at first. I set the alarm off several times over the course of three months to see if they would call me to see if it was a true alarm. Good thing it was not because no one called me. When I called to ask why,the rep was very rude to me.Later I switched to wireless with a camera, that was a big mistake. I called the company many times and they could not tell me how to make it work. When I called to cancel they threated to turn me into a collection agengy. They even asked if I wanted them to send someone over to my house. I kind of felt like they were trying to intimanate me. Sorry for the spelling.Every rep I talked to was either stupid or ignorant . Report them to BBB. They need a class action lawsuit. They suck out loud. |
(Added Dec 16/11) This company is a SCAM!!!!!!!! like a lot of other reviews, I agree..I got the system from them 2 years back..Within 2 months, I had the cops show up 4 times (which cost me 400 dollars more from the city for false alarms)...These scammers wouldn't help me, or cancel the contract..I actually switched off the system for almost the whole time..Now at time of cancellation, they're giving the story about having to pay an extra month etc..I'll get out of it however now, but BE AWARE!! Write to BBB..These guys need to be stopped!!!!! |
(Added Dec 13/11) PROTECT AMERICA RIPPED ME OFF! I strongly agree with all irate customers who have had pretty much the same UNFORTUNATE experience as I did. This is a VERY BAD company with profoundly unethical business practices. They make you pay for service that you don't use and make you pay additional "buy-out" fee EVEN after your contract expired just to be be able to get rid of them. Beware of this company! |
(Added Nov 30/11) I've had pretty much the exact same experience as others on this list. This is a very bad company with profoundly unethical business practices. I had to pay an additional $60 "buy-out" fee after my contract expired just to be rid of them. Beware of this company! |
(Added Nov 29/11) BEWARE!!! I wish we had read these reviews before getting messed up with Protect America. NOTHING worked, the window alarms kept falling off, after two days of working on the phone with them no one could get the alarm to work, so we sent it back. It was within the days to cancel but they still charged us $71.94 and a month later got a bill for $30.00 more. That's when the real problems began. They say we never sent it back and they are going to charge us the monthly fee every month for 3 YEARS or they will turn us into a collection agency. We've called and called and can get no one to answer the customer service number. We're senior citizens and had no idea of what we got ourselves into or what we can do now, we don't have money to waste every month for 3 years. When you order the people are so very nice but WATCH OUT if you have a problem, they're not so nice! I guess we'll try the BBB to report them; we don't know what else we can do... :( |
(Added Nov 17/11) Protect America has been great! You can save a bunch of money with installing the wireless system yourself where other companies charge you several hundred dollars. There is nothing hidden as far as term dates and service charges they tell you all that when you sign up. My kids set off my alarm and they were calling me within minutes to see if they wanted me to dispatch the police. They also tell you to test your alarm system monthly to make sure everything is working properly. I would recommend this alarm company to anyone. |
(Added Nov 16/11) I am reading all of these horror stories but I can say with complete honesty that I have had nothing short of a great experience with this company ....so far. I spoke to a sales rep on Monday, he provided me with every single piece of information that I asked him for, he customized every piece of equipment the way I asked and did his absolute best to provide me with what I wanted. After customizing my alarm and going over the price, I ordered my alarm system with him. My alarm system arrived yesterday(Thursday of the same week), I received one phone call asking me if I was available to install it, I told her that I was at work and that I wouldn't be available until that night and I asked her to call me at 7:30. At 7:32, I received a call from her and we proceeded to install my alarm. I don't know what kind of system all of these other people have, but mine took approx an hour and was extremely easy to install. The only reason it took that long was due to testing and my own stupidity of installing one of the sensors backwards. The lady helping with my system was extremely nice and would not get off the phone until she had answered every question that I had. She even rushed her boss to provide me with my mobile app user name and password so that we could check it before we got off the phone. Obviously the future of my system is unknown until certain circumstances take place, but if the rest of my contract goes like my first four days I will be very pleased. |
(Added Nov 2/11) BEWARE! I paid my contract off in 08 and was contacted by a collection agency last week 10/2011! I hadn't received any bills or anything that would have alerted me otherwise. We sold our home w/alarm system in 08 and much to my chigrin we still had to pay off the contract. I sent them a letter stating to cancel with the payoff check. That was December of 08 and the contract renewel was 1/24/09. We were never received anymore bills or letters. Last week 10/20/11, out of the blue, we get a threatening call from a collections agency for $299.00 to Protect America. I called Protect America upset that almost 3 years have past. She stated they didn't receive the payoff so it went to collections. I asked her if it auto renewed and she said no. She said if I could provide proof of payment they would take care of it. Well of course I got a copy of the check from the bank and called to fax it to them. I spoke with another lady there and she stated that the payment was received but the contract auto renewed and I was responsible for it.That I needed proof of cancellation. Well I will have to let you know how this ends but I will not give them another red cent! |
(Added Oct 27/11) I called customer service and selected the existing customer choice; there are only two choices: existing and someone wanting to purchase an alarm system (I am a former customer), about an issue and was on hold for a very long time. I hung up and called back and selected the new customer and an agent answered on the very first ring. When I explained I was a former customer, the agent transferred me, where I was promptly placed back on hold and an agent didn't answer for nearly an hour. This is not the first time I called and each and every time I have called, the hold wait is excessively long. And there is no customer service email address to write to. Bottom line: Protect America's customer service SUCKS!!! |
| (Added Oct 14/11) I have this company alarm system since 8/20/09, with an original 2 year contract. On 8/25/11, I called PA to make sure my contract was cancelled. To my surprised I was told that I have a 3 year contract!! That I needed to continue to paid for a service contract of an automatic extra year. I was unsatisfied for the lack of service and issues with the system during the last 2 years. However I had a contract I needed to fulfill, prior to requesting cancellation. The staff was unprofessional and treated me with sending a collection agency after me and bad credit report if I did not agree to pay for the extra year contract. I was informed that only California State has 2 year contract. Every other state has to deal with a 3 year contract. I live in North Carolina so I'm stuck with PA for an extra year. I want people to know & be aware of this company bad business practices. |
(Added Sep 20/11) This company is so bad there are no words. They are also breaking the law with their automatic renewal contracts. There are many states that have this law on the books including Texas and Illinois. Texas law HB1702 & Illinois law 815Ilcs601 state that in order to renew a contract the customer must be given not more than 90 days and not less than 15 days written notification from the company(PA) and if the customer does not sign and send this back then the company can renew the contract. Not the other way around as to how PA is using it. PA says that the customer has to contact the company within 60 days??????? WT? Look up the law in your state and see what applies. Good luck to you all, and lets get these guys!! |

(Added Sep 20/11) What a nightmare, bought the system 2/09, with a 3 year contract automatic withdrawl from checking account. They sent the panel, and after several hours on the phone system did not work. They sent out another system and the same thing it didn't work as well, in 2010 I tryed to cancel service, or lack therof and they said no, it a 3 year contract working or not, they said I need a broadband setup for 160.00 which I could have had for 5.00 a month at the beginning of the contract, but being time has passed he graciously offered it for 120.00. I spoke to the Customer Service Manager(after 4 people and 2 hours on the phone) who was only interested in selling more product but would not release me from my contract. He said the customer is not right anymore. So first thing in the morning I will report to BBB, and set up small claim court, or lets set this up for class action lawsuit. |
(Added Sep 20/11) I purchased this system in August, only to find that it wouldn't fit my windows, (I couldn't raise my windows if it were installed due to the way the handle on the windows are made). I was assured on 8/16/2011 by Craig and Brittany that I would not be billed for the service if it was sent back. Protect America recieved their system back on 8/18/2011, shipped by Lone Star Overnight, tracking number ZL732210. On September 2nd, 2011, they drafted money from my account for $44.99 for services for the month of September for a system that was never installed and had been back in their possession for 3 weeks. I have talked to numerous people without a resolution, I have never received my money back. I have filed with the Better Business Bureau. It would be my recommendation that you not even consider this company for protection services, because if you have any sort of problem it will take you forever to get them to do their job and refund you your money, they will steal from you without legal authorization if you make the mistake of giving them your account number! |
(Added Sep 20/11) Protect America is horrible. I strongly recommend that you do not use this company. We signed a 3-year contract for monitoring. Within the first three months, our alarm went off at 11 p.m. on a school night...(read the whole review) |
(Added Sep 17/11) (Protect America Employee) I have worked for Protect America for a good while now. enough to know every part of this company unfortuanlly. only because i can not find another job i assure you. anyway the last review of protect america was clearly by upper management still trying to get sales. the simple fact is this system doesn't work 80% of the time. the sales team is contantly lying to get sales because they know our contract is solid that there is no way to cancel past 3 days. so the will gladly promise the world to you because they know you won't get it and there is nothing you can to about it. To customers that do decide to get out system. even though they pay for brand new equipment,(which is marked up an average of 400%) are generally given returned equipment to save the company even more money... Please understand that this is not the ravings of someone that had a bad day. this is the outcome of day after day after day of having to listen to people lie about this companies intensions and morals. please save yourself the time and money and go somewhere else for your security system. you may end up paying more. i honestly don't know.. all i can say is it would be worth it. with how often this system malfunctions it wont and can't protect you. thank you for reading this and i hope you consider it when you purchase your security system (hopefully not from here). if i get fired so that people stop getting riped off. i have to say i am ok with it. |
(Added Aug 28/11) I feel compelled to warn potential Protect America customers on two fronts. First, the wireless alarm system, as a "self-installation" product, is hopelessly complex to install, requiring hours on the telephone with the service center personnel. I had to enlist a friend to help translate the instructions and deal with the call center personnel. Secondly, to add insult to injury, within one year of the 2-year contract, my job terminated and I had to leave the home where the system was installed to move across the country. I moved in with my son, who has his own security system. When I informed the company that I no longer needed the service I was told that the contract could not be terminated without paying the full price of the remaining contract term. This is an unethical and unfair business practice which I have reported to the Better Business Bureau. Please take this as a warning to avoid this company -- or at least negotiate an early exit clause which might contain a small penalty amount for early termination but which is more favorable to you, the consumer. In this uncertain financial time, I recommend that you maintain maximum flexibility in all long-term contracts like this one. Protect America does not protect America! |
(Added Aug 24/11) This company operates with a questionable ethics code and skirts within grey areas of the law with their contract language. I have never had a company make me feel as though I’m held hostage like this one does. In 2007 I signed a 3 year contract with ‘Protect America, Inc”. In 2010 I moved and no longer needed the system and attempted to cancel the contract. At that time I was told that my contract would not expire for 6 more months. Early in 2011 I requested to cancel the service again I was told that I had to honor the terms of the contact and that it had not expired. In late August 2011 I changed banks and did not provide Protect America, Inc with a new form of payment. This time they were very quick to call me, again we went through the supervisor and “special” cancellation department and requested a manager. I am told that their contract has an automatic roll over clause in it and they are within their rights to bill me, take me to collections etc. . The only way to cancel this service once you have it is to cancel with a very small window of dates. Oddly they did offer to cancel my contract if I would pay them through the end of the year. Funny that feels a lot like blackmail to me. Now it’s worth noting that the alarm system has not been hooked up for two years and not once did they contact me to find out why the system was not reporting in. Two years of service that I didn’t use and didn’t sign up for equates to roughly $800 this company has taken from me for service that was not provided. Do yourself a favor if you are considering a purchase from this company please do your research first and type “Protect America, Inc. complaints” into your favorite search engine. |

(Added Aug 16/11) I decided to install an alarm system at my house, I chose Protect America and so far regret my choice. I ordered the equipment with the overnight shipping, however, instead of receiving the equipment the next business day, I received it only in two days. It turned out that my representative did not bother to place my order on time. When I finally received the equipment, many parts of my order were missing. I called the company for the installation help. Turned out that one and the most important piece of equipment did not work. I spent literally an hour on the phone with the representative, trying to make it work, however, it still didn't. The operator told me that she would send me another one and it will take 3 to 4 business days. Well, this doesn't look like receiving my alarm system overnight, like I ordered. Anyways, at my opinion this is not a customer service. That is a hassle, that I would recommend to avoid. |
(Added Aug 15/11) (Protect America Employee) Protect America is the best alarm company out there. Not only do they have an easy upfront cost, but they are one of the few companies out there that gaurantee a LOCKED IN RATE as well as a LIFETIME WARRANTY. They have a+ custmer service and the best sales team. We have full perimeter packaging that insures your peace of mind knowing that an intruder wont even have a chance to step foot into the home. I am proud to say that I work for this company. |
(Added Aug 15/11) I chose Protect America for my new home because according to Consumer Reports, it was the best alarm company for the money. There was no up-front cost (lie number one) and it was easy to install (lie number 2). They shipped the package in a timely manner. I was in the middle of moving and they annoyed me by calling at least twice a day, every day, for me to install the system. It was a self-installing alarm, which should have been my clue, but I trusted Consumer Reports, claiming that it was easy and quick to install. They claimed it was a 30 minute installation. That was not true at all. I spoke with several technicians, had to get a friend to help me, and I spent countless hours (about 12), plugging and unplugging phone wires, mounting equipment, and testing equipment. In the end, it didn't work, the technicians didn't know why, and they wanted me to ship the system back. They wanted me to pay the shipping fees. They charged $51 to my bank twice for installation and shipping fees. They acted like they could not remove those fees. Then they acted like they were doing me a favor by waiving the re-stocking fee they usually charge when a system is returned!! It is the most insane rip-off of a company I have ever had the displeasure of experiencing in my life. I have told all of my over 600 facebook friends how awful Protect America is. I hope they spread the word and tell all of their friends. I will never make the mistake of choosing Protect America ever again. It is 12 hours of my life that I wasted and will never get back. Please be warned and don't make the same mistake!! |
| (Added Aug 13/11) I purchased a Home Alarm Wireless System about a year ago through this company. I phoned Protect American, Inc. twice in regards to cancelling my service since I will not be residing at this address anymore nor will I have a need for it. They told me I signed up for a 3 year contract and that I have approximately 2 years left until my contract expires. There is no indication on there giving options for early cancellation except to pay the remaining fees for the months I have to cover. There isn't even a reasonable cancellation fee offered. Since the monthly fee for this service is $39.95/mo automatic withdraw, I will have to pay about $950.00 just to clear my name otherwise collection agencies will come after me. I am more than willing to ship back the equipment but I am being threatened my credit will be jeopardized and a collection agency will go after the funds. I will have to pay for a service I am no longer using. In fact, I have not been using it and they are insisting payment. The last time I phoned Protect America was yesterday morning on July 12. I phoned them a week earlier prior to that. They kept stating there was no way to terminate the contract unless I pay all the upfront fees for the remainder of my 2 years. The company will not lose out on my absence but I will be inconvenienced gravely. I am shocked at the level of customer service inadequacy this company has. This is considered unethical practices. Moreover, when I tried to modify my services about 8 months ago, they tried charging me again. It was inconsistent because someone from customer service will tell me one moment I will have to pay $150 to trade in my motion detector for a glass break detector. When I spoke to someone else, they told me it would be free. I will insist to consumers to be weary about doing business with Protect America in the future if this issue is not resolved. |
| (Added July 4/11) Protect America is a bad company. It's sales pitch is a scam. I was told that the alarm system had a back up battery operated wireless system that would call out to a monitoring site in the event someone cut the phone lines or unplugged the alarm box itself. I found out that no call goes out for 15 seconds after the alarm goes off, and that the call is made over my land line. Anyone breaking in can simply cut the telephone line, or go the the alarm box and unplug the unit and no call goes to the police. When I found out that their product did not really provide the security I thought I bought, a Protect America representative told me that the alarm would scare most house breakers away and the call to the police was not absolutely necessary. I was then told that I could upgrade my alarm box by paying another $300.00 plus dollars and pay a higher monthly fee. Protect America's depends on making the customer believe that he or she is getting a first class system at a much lower price than competitors. The truth is that their low priced system is a deeply flawed system that does not really protect your house. They suck you in with misinformation and low cost, and then, after you sign a contract, offer you a much more expensive system to really protect your house. I am sure that there are many satisfied Protect America customers who simply do not realize that their alarm system does not do what they think it does. |
(Added July 4/11) The Accounting Department in Protect America,Inc did not respond to my complaints regarding their billing practices. I had to send in a dispute to the credit card company which handled the auto pay plan. Even then, they did not resolve the dispute but piled on additional penalties. Hopefully, this complaint would draw a response. |
(Added July 4/11) My Girlfriend Called Protect America yesterday and spoke with Annette .. after my girl-friend told Annette she would have to speak with me she was transferred to Jacob, Annette's supervisor. Jacob was rude and abusive, trying many force tactics to get my girlfriend to agree to an alarm. "In my relationship" Jacob stated "I respect my significant other to make decisions on her own, doesn't your man respect you enough to let you make your own choices?" and at the end of the conversation Jacob called my girlfriend "incompetent" High pressure unethical sales tactics and poor reviews ... stay far away from these sharks |

(Added June 4/11) I signed up with Protect America about 5 months ago. Three key chain remotes - one after the other stopped working and had to be replaced in the course of two months. This tells me something about the quality of the equipment that they sell. I had to call twice about the same issue, apparently they had no record of me calling them the 1st time. The last key chain remote replacement was not shipped for two weeks, so I had to call them again. According to the representative, the shipping order was not processed for 'some' reason. Also, they recommend calling in and testing the alarm system once a month. Well, it is totally my fault that I forgot to do that and did not call for about three months. Guess what, they did not receive system armed & disarmed signals from my house for over two months. I only learned about it after I called them about a different issue. I ended up having to reset my cable modem to reestablish connectivity to their control center. This is fine by me, but their should be a better way to test the system. Lessons learned: their services are cheaper then other competitors, but you get what you paid for: equipment of questionable quality, average or below average customer service. |
| (Added June 4/11) I recently contacted "Protect America" to obtain more info on their service and products. What a huge mistake. They literally called my cell # 10 times in 48 hours, (I have the records). When I was able to contact the company, the rep was so condescending and rude, and after reading the other reviews, I will absolutely not be using their service. I will also be contacting the BBB to make a complaint. "Protect America" has terrible customer service and if they want to be able to survive in this economy, they really need wake up and realize consumers have a wide range of companies to choose from that are customer oriented, and my favorite pastime is shopping! |
(Added June 4/11) Beware of Protect America's contract and sales people!! I installed the system in a second home and because I did not have a land line telephone I needed to pay an extra monthly fee for cellular. However, the salesman instructed me that at anytime I could switch over and delete the fee. This weekend I had a land line installed, bought two telephones and called Protect America and was merely given an apology for the salesman's statement but told thet I had to continue to pay the extra fees every month for the remainder of the contract. I then learned that I cannot get out of the three year contract and further it will be rolled over another year if I do not call within 60 days of termination of the contract.I didn't know it was so difficult to give notice to a customer that a contract is ending or is it simply that Protect America is a scam? |
(Added May 1/11) After reading so many negative reviews about Protect America (PA) I though it appropriate to submit something a little more positive. I installed my PA alarm system two months ago. You certainly don't need to be an engineer to install it. Just the most basic handyman skills are adequate. Every step of the way the PA reps were there to help me with questions and setup assistance. I decided to use PA after reviewing the BBB site where they are rated as the number one alarm system company. So... I don't know where some of you are getting the ratings you are writing about? I was NEVER asked for a credit card and receive a monthly statement for billing. Granted, I have not been a PA customer for long. But, I feel I made a very good decision and have been completely satisfied with their service. |
(Added May 1/11) We are on the 3 years contract with PA. The equipments often malfunction and the alarm goes off. When this happens, we just run to the central monitor system to dis-alarm it. One time, I let the alarm go longer than 2 minutes to see what happened. The result was that no one from PA called us. So, do they ever monitor our home? We did not even attempt to call PA due to our previous experiences in dealing with the PA support that did not provide any solution. Now, we are using the security system as the announcement system. We set our calendar to send the termination letter to PA in 60 days before the contract end date. |
(Added May 1/11) I signed a Protect America contract in 2008. It seemed like a better deal than ADT at the time, and I hadn't looked into any of the local home security providers at the time. The other reason I went with Protect America was that...(read the whole review) |
| (Added May 1/11) I have called to update and test my phone when I find out that the wrong numbers are done, my ex wife's name is Hunter and she was never removed. Also her friend was on as a emergency call. There is poor follow through from the protection America company. The wrong addresses have been used and I removed my ex wife from the account 2 years ago but it was never followed through with the Protect America. |
(Added March 18/11) After evaluating my alarm system and current needs for security, I called Protect America for information on upgrading the current system, which was six years old. The service representative offered an upgrade at the cost of $179.00. I ask about a preferred customer program, the service representative bluntly stated there is no such program. Faced with protecting my family and valuables, I elected to change to CPI Security, which will install a new system for free. After informing Protect America I was discontinuing service, they are forcing me to pay a cancellation fee, after six years. I now own the monitoring equipment. The cancellation fee is worth the cost over the inadequate service! |
| (Added March 9/11) Attention to everyone who has been screwed over by Protect America and their cancellation fees! It took me ten minutes to file a complaint against them at BBB.com, and within 3 days PA called me and realized I was right and should not have been charged and they are refunding my money. They do not want these complaints on their record to I encourage you to file a complaint and get your money back! Also tell them about other problems we've all had, poorly working equipment, bad customer service, etc as this company needs to start being accountable! Better Business Bureau says this company has a B-, we all need to let them know they don't deserve it. Maybe an F is more accurate! Just take charge and file a complaint, it's so easy! |
(Added March 9/11) For those that saw the comment that PA had a rating of C+ with the Better Business Bureau, I just checked and they now have a B- for responding to complaints, even though responding doesn't mean they actually paid anyone back. The rating is also based on how long the company has been in business so that helped their rating but that really just means they've been scamming people for longer than they should have been allowed! I challenge everyone who's had the numerous listed complaints and bad experiences with this company to file a complaint with BBB or the will continue this behavior!!! Go to BBB.com and tell them what's REALLY going on with this company. Also PA isn't even accredited by BBB. |
(Added March 9/11) I contracted Protect America over 3 years ago. The system works fine, and have no issues with the monitoring or equipment. My complaint is with the billing department. A few months back, I cancelled a credit card which was the one P.A. was drawing the monthly fee from. Shortly thereafter I received a call from them requesting a new card #. I provided a number to the rep. A couple weeks later, I received another call from another P.A rep for a credit card number. I gave that person the same number. To date, I have been called about every 2-3 weeks from a different P.A rep for the credit card number. After 4 times, I finally refused to give it out again. I just tell the rep whats happening and they go away. Strange thing is that they have no problem hitting my credit card each month, but yet continue to call me for the number. Also, be wary of the contract. After 3 years, if you do nothing, it automatically extends for 1 additional year and they will refuse to cancel (without a hefty cancellation fee) if you miss the cancellation window. You will need to submit a written request to cancel if you want out. |
(Added Feb 11/11) Very complicated and time consuming to install (and I'm a civil engineer) Also you have to call them every month to 'test' the system which takes about 10 mins a month of my valuable time. Am I allowed to say this is a pain in the A**? Contrary to these other reviews the system works great and I've had no problems with it. I just think they BS you when they say it's "easy to install". It took about 2 hours to do it right. Also, their contract says you have to call in once a month to test the system otherwise the warranty is void. I just learned today that when the alarm goes off the signal isn't registered at their alarm center for 60 seconds. What kind of crap is that?! Do you know how much damage a real criminal can do in 60 seconds. When my three year contract is up I will be looking for new service provider. Watch out folks, you get what you pay for. Protect America may be the lowest price, but I?m not happy with all the BS they put in the fine print. This is the second time I've ever written a review on anything, that's how unhappy I am with this. |

(Added Feb 10/11) Buyers steer clear of Protect America. It is a terrible company....(read the whole review) |

(Added Feb 4/11) I ordered the wireless alarm option and received the package within a few days. Upon receipt, I quickly realized that I would have to move the computer's wireless router so it hooked up to the main control panel which I needed to have by the main point of entry. Not wanting to have a bunch of wires and a router in my hallway or a control panel on my desk, I decided this was not a good option and would have never ordered it had the sales person disclosed this very important fact. I was lead to understand that it would work the same as a computer with WiFi (no wires) why else is it called "wireless"? I returned the package via UPS the next day. I then found I had a fee from (them) on my credit card and called to see why. The customer service person told me the contract, which the sales person will very quickly have you check off and agree to online via phone, said there were restocking fees, etc. I was essentially charged for the salesperson's quick talk and selling me something that was not represented properly. READ THE CONTRACT FULLY before you check the box, even if the person on the phone is impatient!! In the end, the customer service person in not so many words told me to buzz off and I was being held to my contract. |
| (Added Feb 4/11) I recently signed a Protect America 3 year contract. From the reviews that I have read, it sounds like there are concerns with equipment, termination of contract, and monitoring. Well, we are not using Protect America equipment except for the device they sent to convert to wireless. All of the motion detectors, window sensors, and keypads are from another company. So no issue with equipment. If I should decide to move before January 2014, I had better submit a cancellation letter 60 days in advance or there will be problems. Finally, monitoring is the last issue and since there has been no call outs, I can't say anything about this issue. However, I think I might test this by setting off my alarm to see if Protect America actually calls (like they are suppose too). So far, I have been pleased at how easy it was to install the device to switch to wireless and the patience of customer service. I guess if you don't have the money to spend on equipment, PA may be your only option and remember, you get what you pay for. So far, I'm happy with the service. |
(Added Jan 26/11) I purchased a Protect America Gold Package in April 2008. When I purchased the package, I was explicitly told that a technician who would come to my home and install the system. Although I was shocked I had to do it myself, it wasn't that difficult to do. I've added a number of accessories to the system (additional two-way talking keypad, X10 compatible transformer, and sirens) - I didn't purchase any of these items from PA as they charge about 150-250% what other sites charge for the same items. I just sent PA a certified letter that I would not be renewing my contract in April 2011, and am switching to NextAlarm. It looks like I'll be able to use the same Simon 3 system I purchased from PA with NextAlarm. I would not recommend Protect America. I've paid them $40 a month for 36 months (~$1500), for equipment that cost cost about $200. It would have been much cheaper to put a system together myself. |
(Added Jan 15/11) I'm very happy with the phone-based alarm system I've had for the past year. Today, I've upgraded to the broadband system, which would have a quicker response with a break-in. A few times I've called for customer service, adding new window magnets, and each time the service techs have been patient and helpful. After the initial cost depending on the system that fits your phone or internet, it gets delivered via fed ex, and the techs call you as soon as its delivered so they can help install it over the phone asap. Took less than 1 hour. The monthly fee is reasonable - $20 or more depending. Peace of mind for the cost of a few coffees. Trying to get my daughters to let me get them systems for their apartment and house. 80% of break-ins are by people we've met. They have a lot of friends over. |
(Added Jan 12/11) Like the others reviews say: 3 yr. contract and if you don't cancel in writting 60 DAYS PRIOR to the end of the service year, then you are locked into another year of service with them. I've had alarm systems for the last 25 years of my life and was shocked when they sent me the equipment. It looked like it was built in 1981 and so cheap. I had problems from the first week of use and in retrospect should've paid the early cancellation fee. It was such a pain to use, that for the last 3 years have never even turned the security system on. Despite not using my security system, it would start beeping randomly through the day and into the night, over and over again and wouldn't stop no matter what buttons I pressed or what I did. It got so bad, I wanted to take it outside and smash the stupid thing...unfortunately I don't own a baseball bat. Do your self a favor and spend a little extra money with ADT or other reputable company. Protect America isn't in the business to protect people, they are into it to screw you out of as much money as they possibly can. |
(Added Dec 30/10) I contacted Protect America for information regarding product. Instantly, high pressure sales tactic began. He told me about product and to see if I a can get it without fees, I would need credit approval which I did get. I told him about my previous ADT system. He recommended bronze package. The agreement was completed on line while I was still on the telephone with representative. He guided me along to each field and seemed in a rush especially when I was trying to read the agreement. He assured me I can return the wireless home security system within week if not satisfied. He did not disclose any information regarding restocking fee. Once I called to cancel on Dec. 26,2010, a different representative them told me about the restocking fee. I informed him the other person never said anything. At that point he asked well if I read the agreement and I told him the sales representative didn't give me time. I feel they used deceptive and high pressure tactics to get you to sign, assuring you that if not satisfied you can return the equipment. Then if you cancel, they then inform you of high restocking fee in hopes you decide to stay with them instead of paying the restocking fee. |
(Added Dec 26/10) We signed up for a Protect America system 2 years ago. We signed up for the 36 month contract with no cost for the system. I really wish that I had done some more research at the time. We signed up with Protect America and have actually had good customer service, but the product that we received is subpar to the other products on the market and the contract sticks you with the system for 36 months. I have now signed up with a no contract EMC plan in the area that is far superior to what we had with Protect America. For those asking for a way out of the contract, there is one way that I have found and used. You have to get someone else to take over the contract and the obligation for the remainder of the term. Protect America was very helpful in helping me to do this from providing all of the paper work to making sure everything was ready to go to bill the new owner of the system. There are people out there that would like to have an alarm, without a long term contract and by aquiring someone else's contract with a year or so remaining is not a bad deal. At least the Protect America system can be transfered to someone else since it is wireless and not hardwired into the house. |
(Added Dec 24/10) I have used their service for 3 years 6 months. I thought I will be out of contract after 3 years but what I heard is that mine is renewed every year if I don't tell them not to after 3 years. Now I moved to different state and I wanted to cancel the service and they charge me early termination fee. I know I didn't remember I have signed that part, "the contract is renewed every year after 3 years' contract". But the term doesn't sound right. Because if I am paying lower monthly price because of the yearly contract, I would be responsible for early termination but I heard that they do not simply allow monthly subscription. With one year's contract I don't get anything from them but do I have to pay early termination fee? I don't understand the early termination fee at all. I think there are many people who paid this kind of early termination fee without doubt. Anyway be careful!!! |
(Added Dec 23/10) I have had my system since January 2010. With the help of the technician I was able to install myself within hour in half. I have several door and window detectors, which makes me feel very secure. I love it that it lets you know if a door is ajar or window opened when in the off mode. I have never had the police to come out for anything, but I have had several false alarms and I almost always get a phone call on my cell immediately with the broadband line connect. I had a problem in the beginning monitoring service had the wrong address for me, which customer service provided good customer service to correct that error. They have also shown good customer service with provided working equipment, if something did not work properly in the beginning of my contract. I have read so many bad complaints. I hope I don't have any issues in the future. But I'm resting on #1 in consumer reports and my service thus far that I will be treated fairly in the future. I'm in the military too and I agree with other military that Protect America should do like most alarm companies and allow you to get out of contract, if you get mobilized and have to move everything into storage for a year. I hope this helps someone and I hope I'm truly being monitored with the police. I do have to do my part to and inform my local police company with the information Protect America provided on their certificate of monitoring. I'll make sure to certified my cancellation letter in 3 years. |

(Added Dec 11/10) We have been under contract with our PA wireless system for almost 3 years now, and I am thrilled that we will soon be done with this horrible system and company. Our system has NEVER functioned properly and PA has done NOTHING about it. They just keep referring to the 3 year contract that we signed. I have used Brinks and ADT in the past, which at the the time did not offer a wireless system. I would have been much better off NOT HAVING A SECURITY SYSTEM at all. It would have saved me about $2000.00! Now that ADT is offering a wireless system now, I will be making the switch. DO NOT GO WITH PROTECT AMERICA if you are considering it. Once they get you in contract they could care less about if the system is working or not. |
(Added Nov 16/10) I signed up for and got home security alarm from Protect America in Feb. 2008....(read the whole review) |
(Added Nov 16/10) Terrible system, terrible service, locks you into a three year contract. NOT Military Friendly. Every time a thunder storm came it would nock the system off line. You'll have to spend hours on the phone getting help to set it up again. They won't call to inform you of system malfunctions but they'll continue to charge! Sometimes the representatives aren't knowledgeable about the system. I had the mobile system which always feel off if doors were slammed or dogs brushed up against them. The "glass smash" sensing device did not work at all and costs over $300. Do not use Protect America. |
(Added Nov 15/10) This company, and many like it, make me sick. 1.5 extra years of service payments after I no longer had the system. I was told by customer service reps several times that it would be done and cancelled after our phone conversation(conveniently not documented properly). I just payed the "cancellation" fee and feel sick. I serve and defend this country and have for years. But NOT so our people can screw our own people. |
(Added Oct 30/10) At first, my experience with PA was positive - they monitored my home as expected and alarm events were handled well. However, when I moved the company's priorities and customer service became apparent. They would not let me out of the contract when I moved and I was forced to either pay for the entire duration of the contract (although I'd have no monitoring) or rollover into an additional 3 year contract at my new location at a slightly lower monthly rate. I opted for the rollover contract which was a terrible choice. They shipped DEFECTIVE equipment (and billed me for new equipment), multiple calls to resolve were not answered and they failed to ever give me a working system. Phone calls and written requests to cancel were unheeded. As a result I have PAID FOR YEARS WITHOUT ANY MONITORING WHATSOVER. Customer service runs round and round emphasizing that customers sign a contract but takes no responsibility for providing the service that the customer is paying for! Had Protect America promptly addressed the issue with defective equipment and gotten my service up and running this would be one thing, but $898 for 3 years of non-service? |
(Added Oct 29/10) Do not do business with Protect America, they are thieves. In fact, I am about to file criminal charges against them for making unauthorized charges on my credit card. My system has not been monitored for almost 2 years (22 months) yet they continue to take money from me for alarm monitoring service. The alarm quit working at least 18 months ago and I unplugged it from the wall to stop it from beeping. They never once called to tell me they were not getting a signal, to make sure a thief hadn't broken in and cut my phone and power lines. Every time I tried to call them to report the faulty alarm equipment, I was placed on perpetual hold until I just hung up. When I finally got a hold of someone last week, they promised to send me a working alarm panel, for an additional $479, but since their monthly rates were low, I agreed to take it and continue out their contract. It was not delivered until 2 days after it was promised, and when it came it was missing parts. The tech could not get it to work, and said he would send me the missing parts overnight. That package didn't come for 5 days later, after I cancelled (or tried to cancel) their service and went with ADT instead. Just today, I noticed they (Protect America) charged an additional $109 to my credit card, apparently for the "missing parts" which I never received. They are crooks and someone should sue the crap out of them and put them under. |
(Added Oct 20/10) Forget ProtectAmerica - they have no idea what is required if you need a security system registration in your area. They told me my system can be activated immediately but when I checked with my local police dept. I learned it would take over 10 days to get paperwork through and that legally there can be no police or fire response until Protect America takes care of this paperwork. I trust them to know how to work with the police and fire dept. in my area since that is who I am counting on to respond to an emergency. |
(Added Oct 20/10) Buyer beware! This is a scam. They are more interested in shady contracts that are next to impossible to cancel than they are maintaining good customer service. Their monitoring of the alarm system is horrible. This company should be forced out of business. They just skirt on the gray shady side of legit business with their "Automatic Contract Renewal" policy. It is a shame people are allowed to operate business like that. To hire legal advice is to costly to fight the harrassment so people just pay the bill. Do some research before contracting any alarm security firm especially over the internet. We live in scam society. BEWARE!!! |
(Added Oct 14/10) Absolutely the worst company ever!! I have had nothing but horrible customer service from them and they are nothing but scam artist! After learning that I can't cancel my contract for another 2 years I decided to dismiss their lack of customer service and give them another shot after not connecting my alarm for 6 months. I called to order more sensors for my now larger home just to find out that its going to cost $459!!! When I first bought my alarm system I told them that I would eventrually be moving into a larger home and they assured me it was no problem to send me more sensors... yeah, no problem for them!!! They never mentioned how expensive it would be. Thanks to their lies and scams I have an alarm that I can't afford. Perhaps I should have stuck with the old fashioned way... buy a dog! Do not use this company!! |
(Added Oct 5/10) I called and reviewed several major security companies.I then chose Protect America.Everyone I spoke to was courteous and professional. Their prices were in similar ranges as the major security companies. I was pleased with the G.E Simon XT security control panel sent to me as well as the window/door and motion sensors.I had many questions, called often and each time was treated courteously and professionally. I am not sure why all the negative reviews. I even reviewed my experience on their website and made a suggestion. I got an email response as well as a telephone call!!! |
(Added Sept 26/10) This is the worst company I have ever dealt with, their customer service is the worst, I had them for 5 long years and the alarm never worked properly... I had a local company come in to take over, but certain codes are needed to reprogram the call center number, Protect America will not give you those codes on the equipment you bought from them... The people are rude now, and un-helpfull, say to shove it and buy a new system from someone else, my system was a 1500.00 sham! |
(Added Sept 26/10) In July I called to cancel our service and request that the equipment be picked up. The phone rep advised that the equipment was ours to keep, and confirmed cancellation of service. On Sept 3, Protect America debited my checking account for a mothly service charge and mailed me a bill for service in August. In a phone call today to the billing center, I was advised that my cancellation request was less than the 60 days prior to contract renewal, so I am stuck for another 13 months of payments for service in our home from which we are moving. When I switched from annual to monthly payments, I was given to believe that our contract was a month-to-month contract. Never again will we use Protect America, and we will read reviews carefully before signing up for service in our new home. |
(Added Sept 9/10) Read the contract, if you did, you would never agree to their terms. Like another reviewer said, it is like signing yourself (your house) away to the devil. They "are not responsible for notifying police/dispatch" if your alarm goes off. So basically I paid for a service and when my house was broken into (granted, not their fault), nothing happened. Why spend the money on the alarm system then? It is impossible to get out of the contract, the fine print is ridiculous. They don't troubleshoot when the system fails but rather find ways to get you to spend more money and be further obligated to their company. Terrible. Terrible. Terrible. |
(Added Aug 25/10) Do not use Protect America. It's signing your life away to the devil. Like many other reviews here it is virtually impossible to cancel the service. First they claimed to have "lost" my cancellation letter and now they claim I can only cancel on the anniversary date of my contract (which is months away). Do yourself a favor and go with a different company. ANY other company. |
(Added Aug 12/10) I counted the months down until the end of my agreement with this AWFUL company and now I am fighting for my deposit. Protect America stated the wording should have been Non Refundable Dposit but it does not state NRD, it stated deposit. Then they stated we can hold the deposit for an adidiitonal 12 mos even though you do not have service with us. I am now filing a complaint with BBB and then seeking an attorney. If you are thinking about receiving services with this company, please BEWARE and if you decide to obtain their services, "God Bless You", you will definitely need it. This is the worst form of any business and they should nto be allowed to continue any services in any form or matter. |
(Added Aug 4/10) (Updated Jan 3/10) Horrible. Please, anybody who reads this, do yourself and your family a favor and DO NOT use Protect America as your alarm system provider or monitoring service. They are horrible. The person who "walked" me through the installation sounded like a street thug and I could barely understand him. He also was laughing and joking with somebody when he was on the phone with me. He also forgot to tell me about several features of the system. Most importantly, if a burglar breaks in while you and your family are home, you will be hog tied and dead on the floor before your phone ever rings. I have the wireless system, and a battery in one of the sensors went out in the middle of the night. I grabbed my gun and checked the entire house BEFORE turning the alarm off. I then turned off the alarm, and waited for the phone call to tell them I couldn't find anything wrong. The phone call never came. The next day I called and asked why, and I was told they don't call until the alarm has gone off for 90 seconds. Well I got news for you. My alarm went off for well over 90 seconds!! But even 90 seconds is a lifetime if a intruder is in your home in the middle of the night. Their lame excuse was, if we contact the police right away they might charge me for a false alarm. I was baffled. I told the woman, how about you just call ME right away, and if I don't answer, or if I say something is wrong, THEN you can contact the police. She said that isn't their policy. Update: Their policy has not changed, and neither has my decision to cancel their service the day my contract is expired. |
(Added July 19/10) I am cancelling service with Protect America after having 2 properties, and 5 years of loyalty with them. First, when you call to cancel they "transfer" you to the dept that handles cancellations but really they're transferring you to someone who tries to get you to stay. That's when they offer to match any price you've seen out there. Only when I've decided to leave will they offer me a competitive price. Onec the rep has finished their sales pitch to keep you as a customer, that's when they tell you have must write a letter to cancel service. I've been paying $30-$35 a month, and found several reputable companies who will do monthly monitoring for only $8.95 with internet tracking capabilities and so many other features. I do not recommend Protect America to anyone, for price, quality, and service reasons. |
(Added July 11/10) Been unfortunately tied into this disaster of a company through 3 year contract which renewed "automatically" for a 4th year without my approval. Alarm has gone off repeatedly (thank god not for a real robbery) over the past 3 years...never have I received a call. When I called about this, they said they don't call if the alarm is cancelled within a few minutes...so I let it go off for 10 minutes...still no call. It is a joke...you are paying for nothing...terrible product, beyond horrible customer service, contracts with small print to rip you off... |
(Added July 11/10) I had e-mailed a cancel letter to Protect America in April 2010 as my contract was up in July. I never heard anything from them so on July 7th I wanted to make sure this is the last month, they said they never received a e-mail and I am stuck with another year's service. This is fraud at it best. The key pad never worked from the first, and it was a nightmare trying to get things working right, worst security system I have ever seen. Larry Taylor |
(Added June 24/10) I had a Protect America alarm system for 2 years when I decided to cancel it because I lost my job 8 months before. The contract was up to October 1, 2009. I tried to cancel on October 5 but they said I had to stay for another year as they had extended the contract automatically. I finally paid 1/2 year penalty to get rid of it. On the positive side,it was easy to install and change sensor locations. I had several alarms but I never got a call from them or a police visit , so I don't know if they actually inform the police or if it is all bogus. I would never recommend them as they are no flexible and I don't trust their monitoring. |
(Added June 23/10) Terrible customer service. I tried to cancel my contract and payoff the rest of the contract by phone, email, fax, and letter, and the company never got back to me. What a nightmare! |
(Added June 12/10) I also had problems with them canceling my contract. I called them 8 months before it expired and they said to call them back in May. I called them back and was informed that It was to late to cancel, it had been automatically renewed. I had to pay a six month penatly to cancel. What makes their service even more pathetic is that they did not know what they were monitoring. I canceled the phone they were apparently monitoring 8 months prior to the original end date of the contract. Their entry contact points were also all pasted to the walls and doors. Most of them fell off within the first year. I will never recommend Protect America, Inc. to anyone that wants security in their home. They are a complete joke and a waste of money. |
(Added May 18/10) This company could not service themselves. The lady was rude and would not cancel the subscription because it had automatically renewed itself. I would not know this because I took over three years ago for my mother and she signed that contract in 2002. Then I noticed that I knew nothing about the security I had been blindly paying for. Had multiple problmes even sending asign in the mail. Also I called and they said they would call me back that they were busy and they never did. That day I was calling to get a better system or an updated one. They never called and I wanted to cancel. SInce I own the company and the person who signed was fully disabled and not affiliated with thus company you would think common courtesy would be to cancel. Nope not these greedy good for nothings. They said "well dont pay it then" " it will go on your credit" On my mother's credit who really does not need credit now that she is disabled but the point is she has suffered enough. So I will not and I will post how crazy their company is. Oh they also said that I had not called them in three years to do anything with the system and I said did you not hear that I know nothing about this system that I have been paying for because of a stroke in the family I took over a business. I had three years to learn the business(school and my BS oh and a kid) and had just found time to find out how crumby they were. How rude!I mean they were getting paid on time in all those years I just was not gettign any kind of service from them. DId they call me to check in on their service? NOPE. |
(Added May 7/10) Protect America is a joke! I completed my 3 year agreement although the last year I had moved and was serving in the U.S. Army. Once I told them to cancel, they said that I needed a certified letter mailed to them to cancel and unfortunately I didn't not do it 60 days in advance so my service was renewed for another year. So I told them they better cancel because I was putting a stop on them at my bank and once they didn't receive payment on the 3 year 1 month payment that it should automatically cancel my account for insufficient funds or non payment. Well they continued to bill be for the next 2 years. Now its on my credit report and my next step is going to JAG to not only get it off but I am also going to sue them and its not gonna be for the 900 something dollars they say I owe them. You treat people like this, I am going to sue them for every penny I can get. I am 36 years old and have never in my life sued anyone or taken money without repaying them. This company is where I draw the line. They are stealing essentially and ruining peoples good credit with bogus tactics! Oh and for the anonymous complaints you all state, my email is eq26@yahoo.com and my name is James Quinn! Spam it if you want because its not my main email. I am not afraid to say who I am so shut your mouth's because people are being scammed by this company. |
(Added Apr 30/10) Take a very good look at Protect America's return policy on their website before thinking about making a purchase. Would a home security company that believes in the quality of their product and service only give customers 7 days to return the equipment before locking them into their contract??? Not to mention you will be charged a $79 restock fee for returning it. They won't refund you the fees they paid to ship the equipment and you will be paying to ship the junk back to them. Then they bill you for the first month of service immediately upon placing your order. I came across this site shortly after ordering and got kind of scared with all the reviews. I'm just glad I didn't get locked into the 3 year contract and returned the equipment in the first week. I thought the control panel was definitely not up to date in appearance (No LCD screen). You have the option to use a land line or broadband internet connection through your router but you will be charged an additional $5 per month for broadband connection. I have chosen to go with another wireless service provider that operates on cellular technology (no wires whatsoever) with a 30 day free trial and no restock or shipping fees if returing and my monthly rate was even cheaper! |

(Added Apr 6/10) I have used my alarm for a few months now. It is great to know that I am protected by all windows and doors secured and armed. The salesman, ***** *******, was very kind and followed up with phone calls to check on my satisfaction with the system. I plan to let my friends and family know what I think is a good plan and coverage. I like the idea that I can take the system with me when I move. I was worried about connecting the system ourselves but my son had no problem with the instructions and testing. I hope to never have to use it in an emergency, but I am sure that the response will be reliable. Any calls I have made were answered quickly and to my satisfaction. |

(Added Mar 29/10) (Updated July 19/10) Buyer beware. I purchased an alarm system with PA and could not get it to work. I spent hours on the phone with a "tech rep" and still it did not work. I asked for a rep to come to my home and install it for me. They said it would cost $150 more. When I refused this offer I asked to have my contract cancelled. They refused. I have paid $32 per month for 2.5 years and the equipment has never worked. I would not recommend this company to anybody. Check their BBB rating it is a C and I think even that is way too high. Update: The company continues to stonewall me. There are two months left on my original three year contract. The system never worked for even one day. I recently discovered another little "gotcha" in their contract. The buyer must request a contract termination or it automatically renews for another year. I repeat my original warning, STAY AWAY FROM PROTECT AMERICA SECURITY. |

(Added Feb 16/10) This company misrepresented the way they bill to me. You sign an agreement for 2 years, then, if you want to cancel, you have to send a letter of cancellation before 2 months before your renewal date each year. Otherwise, the contract requires you to continue for another year - I guess somewhat like a telephone agreement. When I called them and tried to cancel, no one told me about a letter I needed to write. Since I had missed the cuttoff date, I now have the option to pay half the premium to cancel now (no more service) or continue at full rate until Dec 2010 - as long as I get a letter of cancellation to them before Dec 11, 2010. Be careful - read and carfully study the whole contract before you sign! |

(Added Jan 31/10) I am very pleased with Protect America. I signed up with them November 2009 and it was very simple to set up our self so it saved us installation fees that other companies might charge. We are also satisfied with the monitoring fees/service. We had our first scare the other night when the wind blew one of our doors open. Protect America called us and notified us what door triggered the alarm and asked if we wanted to notify the police immediately, I mentioned that we weren't sure if someone was in the house or not and they offered to stay on the phone while we checked out the entire house. Thankfully no one had intruded and it was just the wind which blew open a door that was not closed all the way. So we feel very safe that we are being monitored and the comfortable that the equipment works as it should. |

(Added Dec 30/09) I called a few alarm places, and had the best luck with this one. I'm writing a review here because I really like them and think that if you're looking for an easy system then this is it! I'm a little older, so technology is a little ahead of me. This system was so easy to figure out and operate. They are very helpful on the phone and I didn't sit there for an hour on hold before someone talked to me. Great system - even for those who think technology is too hard to handle! |

(Added Oct 24/09) (Updated Jan 31/10) My situation involves that after I've been a loyal customer for over 6 years, and after fulfilling a 72 months contract, Protect America, Inc. refuse to stop an Automatic Debit Payment from my bank account until August 15, 2010 because contracts are auto-renewed? How convenient? Now I'm stuck paying $29.91 a month for a service I don't even want nor I can't use since I moved out of my house! Protect America, Inc. use legal binding contracts to trap customers into keeping their service. Signing a contract with Protect America, Inc. is no different from allowing a criminal to walk into your house and steal cash from your home. Update: After explaining my difficult financial situation to Protect America's CEO, they immediately helped me out of my frustrating situation with their contract and I'd like to commend Protect America Inc. for the prompt help I've received and for making the CEO truly available to the customers. |

(Added Aug 23/09) (Updated Jan 22/10) This is the WORST alarm system. Not to mention the company itself. They are a total scam!! We have been paying for service for 2.5 years now. Our system only worked for a few months. We have had it serviced several times and it would work for a few days then stop again. Please don't purchase this system. They make you sign a contract for 2 - 3 years....don't do it. Update: This is just an update to my first post...The alarm system and the company is still a total scam!! Since my last post my contract with them has ended. It took me 4 phone calls and 3 emails to get my policy cancelled. Remember, when your contract ends you need to cancel it 60 days prior to your last month of service or else they will reistate your contract for another 3 years. In the 3 years we had our system it only worked for around 6 months. We had is serviced at least 3 times. Don't get this system! |

(Added Aug 18/09) (Updated Jan 22/10) This is a scam company. The provide cheap equipment that never really works, customer service is apalling, I have called numerous times to cancel, and everytime I call they say my contract date is another year out. Signed up for a 2 year contract, and now in my 4th year with NO equipment that has never worked. STAY AWAY from Protect America at all costs. This is not a consumer friendly company. They just want to railroad you into contracts that renew automatically and tell you just enough to keep you drug along for the ride. Update: They did eventually calling me back after I sent an email to their CEO via the web site. I ended up getting a call back and the only way out was to pay for half of the new term they had automatically renewed me for. I took their offer of like $120 buyout to basically get the problem to go away and make sure they could not do it again. The issue is resolved from that perspective, but I still highly suggest people be very wary of the business practices of this company. I personally would suggest everyone stay away and go with a different company with a better reputation. |

(Added Mar 3/09) (Updated May 27/09) This system sucks! Protect America did not protect my family. We were robbed yesterday and the they had all day to help themselves because my "security" system failed. And to top it off, Protect America wants to profit off of it because the low life thieves cut the wire and broke my box, the alarm company tells me it is not covered. I have to pay $309 to replace the box! Protect America are thieves too! Update: They did not resolve anything. I had to pay the $309 for the new box. Then today, I find out that I was originally told my contract was 24 months and now it is 36 months. I called because I wanted the system to be transferred to just my name. My husband and I were both joint but he no longer lives with us and is not allowed in the house. I need my alarm to protect us more than ever. Well, they said they can't do that without proper credit nevermind the fact they have been drafting their payments from my account that he is not on. They have no problem taking my money, but they can't seem to protect me and my kids from the one person we need protecting from. |

(Added Feb 11/09) (Updated June 1/09) DO NOT BUY! The system is a piece of junk and the contract is written so you have to pay for it whether it works or not. This company should be sued and put out of business. It's a good lesson in READ THE CONTRACT before you sign it. It's my lesson and it's going to cost me a lot of money. Update: Protect America is a consumer scam. I have not changed my mind. Yes, they were willing to work with me on the alarm system--not canceling the contract-I have been that route before. I am not a technician and have no desire to spend hours on the phone with a piece of junk equipment that will fail within days if you are lucky enough to get it to work at all. |
