I signed up with them November 2009 and it was very simple to set up our self so it saved us installation fees that other companies might charge. We are also satisfied with the monitoring fees/service. We had our first scare the other night when the wind blew one of our doors open. Protect America called us and notified us what door triggered the alarm and asked if we wanted to notify the police immediately, I mentioned that we weren't sure if someone was in the house or not and they offered to stay on the phone while we checked out the entire house. Thankfully no one had intruded and it was just the wind which blew open a door that was not closed all the way. So we feel very safe that we are being monitored and the comfortable that the equipment works as it should. |

(Added Dec 30/09) The only bad comments I've read on here are about the contract and how you have to cancel 60 days before the contract expires. I bought the system last month or one reason - to protect my family for LIFE. Why would you even want to cancel? I've had no problems with the company, nor has anyone else. If you are upset, it's because you didn't read your contract (who signs without reading the rules?). Anyway, I LOVE my system, and it works great! Karl was very knowledgeable about the packages and helped me get set up fast! It's the best system around, and I have no intentions of ever canceling.
(Added Dec 30/09) I called a few alarm places, and had the best luck with this one. I'm writing a review here because I really like them and think that if you're looking for an easy system then this is it! I'm a little older, so technology is a little ahead of me. This system was so easy to figure out and operate. They are very helpful on the phone and I didn't sit there for an hour on hold before someone talked to me. Great system - even for those who think technology is too hard to handle!
(Added Dec 29/09) I have had the system now for 2 months. I self installed, fairly simple. I have a delay on the front door only and have sensors and motion detectors throughout the house. I have had the sensor tripped by my small dog 2 times on the same morning because she went down the stairs to the basement (I discovered later on that I forgot to close the basement door). They called me right away and within minutes dispatched the police. Customer service has been very nice and helpful so far working through some small glitches (i.e. whose number do they call first, learning how to disable a motion sensor while the rest of the system is armed). So far, I feel pretty good about the system and the monitoring although I agree with others that the main box is humongous and a bit on the ugly side, but then again, it works and that is what is important!

(Added Dec 4/09) Know this before you order the system. The "look" is pretty hideous. The control box looks like an enormous, white, 1980s answering machine. Do you really want this sitting by your primary door? The door triggers are also large and obtrusive and white. If you have dark door frames they will stick out like sore thumbs. I took it out of the box, realized I couldn't live with the aesthetics and immediately called to cancel. As I was inside of 7 days, this was allowed, however, I am being charged $80 for a "restocking" fee. (That's $80 for someone to take it back out of the box.) Yes, that was in the fine-print box that they ask you to stop and read during their pressure sales call, but that only makes it slightly less odious.
(Added Dec 4/09) RIPOFF- Illegal/immoral business practices. I was with Protect America for just over three years. I was initially in a two year contract which was long over. I needed to cancel since I was moving. They said that your contract AUTOMATICALLY renewed at the end of 2 years unless you canceled it. I seriously doubt the legality of this but after talking to like 5 different people over there all I could do was buyout the remaining year of payments in order to be rid of those idiots. Basically you can only have service in blocks of 2 years and you have to cancel exactly 30 days in advance of the end of your contract or poof it automatically renews. Just based on this experience I would NEVER do business with them. I'm not really sure if they were ever even really monitoring since there was one time I didn't get it turned off in time and they never called.
(Added Nov 15/09) This is the best alarm system company you can go with. I have all the necessary protection for all my doors and windows, and they all work great. I had a lot of help over the phone to make sure I had all the sensors I needed. I don't intend to ever cancel my monitoring because I truly believe protecting my family is the best way to spend my pocket change! If you're getting a system then definitely go with Protect America!
(Added Nov 2/09) ok... I got my system in on 12/29/2008, GE Simon it has worked just fine for all these months and FINALLY I got smoke alarms added to the system ... I NOW feel totally Safe... My sister had her house broken into in Michigan, and my nephew and his family while sleeping had someone break into their home..... My system has three door sensors, six window sensors, two glass breaks, one motion detector (have the other one yet to install) and a smoke detector for all three floors with X10 horns for the basement and upstairs... I am totally satisfied with Protect America and would suggest them to anyone.....

(Added Oct 24/09) I had Protect America in my previous home. The equipment was fine but the service was terrible. I purchased my system because of a referral from a friend who had just previously purchased his system. After about a year of seemingly no problems, my alarm goes off and no one calls to check. They claim they monitor their systems but they don't. This also happened to my friend who referred me to Protect America. After this incident I put up a large note in my office to remind me of the contract expiration date. Make sure you read the contract, because mine said Ihad to send in my request for cancellation in writing and it had to be received no sooner than 60 days to the end and not after or it would automatically renew. When I got within 60 days I sent them a certified letter via Fed Ex. (signature required) informing them of my request for cancellation. I also asked them to sent me a letter of acknowledgement and acceptance of my request. Once out of the contract I continued to utilze the system (unmonitored) with no problems.
(Added Oct 24/09) (Updated Jan 31/10) My situation involves that after I've been a loyal customer for over 6 years, and after fulfilling a 72 months contract, Protect America, Inc. refuse to stop an Automatic Debit Payment from my bank account until August 15, 2010 because contracts are auto-renewed? How convenient? Now I'm stuck paying $29.91 a month for a service I don't even want nor I can't use since I moved out of my house! Protect America, Inc. use legal binding contracts to trap customers into keeping their service. Signing a contract with Protect America, Inc. is no different from allowing a criminal to walk into your house and steal cash from your home. Update: After explaining my difficult financial situation to Protect America's CEO, they immediately helped me out of my frustrating situation with their contract and I'd like to commend Protect America Inc. for the prompt help I've received and for making the CEO truly available to the customers.

(Added Sept 23/09) I had high hopes when getting an alarm system, but now I completely regret it. Every day a sensor dies. I go through hour long phone calls that fix the problem for the day then it's back to not working the next. I wrote asking how much it would cost to cancel my contract. Their response "What's your address." Oh thank you, that answers my very simple question. I write again and they say I can either give my contract to someone else(like an enemy or ex-boyfriend) or pay the rest of the contract, aka $35 a month for the next two years all right now. This is so stupid. Unlike a normal and good company, they don't have a fee so you can just cancel your membership. Please, don't go with this company. I've wasted too much money and worry over this crap.

(Added Sept 9/09) At the end of October my contract will expire, but I have every intention of staying with this company. I absolutely love my system because I just feel SO much safer now. You don't even have to worry about your dog setting it off because they have some sot of thing in the system that lets it know it's just a dog/cat and not an actual break-in. I had a problem with my sensor on the kitchen door, but turns out I just didn't line it properly. When I called the customer service line they answered right away - which I was REALLY surprised about because usually you have to wait on hold foreverrrr! But not with this comany, I love them! They're the best!!
(Added Sept 9/09) I just wanted to say that my door sensor wasn't working properly and when I called the customer service they helped me fix it right away. Over the phone she helped me try to move the sensor and reset it, but it turns out the way I had the sensor on my front door the screen door was hitting it every time it closed. She express mailed a new sensor and I got it the next day .. at NO charge to me! I was so surprised. Sensor works great now that I put it in a place where the other door won't hit it. Thanks for the speedy delivery!!
(Added Sept 1/09) I have been with three different alarm companies (Protect America being the third) and I have to say that their service is what I expected. The salesperson was friendly, kind of pushy, and helpful. The equipment was like all GE equipment; reliable, easy to work with, and user friendly. The only difference is that I installed this one myself, which was not rocket science. It was a standard three year agreement with no extra charge for the equipment warranty. I am satisfied thus far. (I have had an alarm for many years though and I know what to expect from alarm companies).
(Added Sept 1/09) We have had Protect America for over a year, with absolutely no problems. I actually got calls to check out my system and the woman was friendly and helpful. Once even when my husband forgot the code, i ran in to shut it off. They called anyway and said they wanted to check to ensure everything was good but since I used my code, they did not need a password verification. Even once when the power blipped and it sent the alarm off, they called. Not sure why folks are not getting their system monitored but we have had no issues but just great service and performance. Also, if your alarm is going off, check your batteries. That is your responsibility. If you read the book, I am sure it tells you that but also common sense should prevail. An alarm company we hired to wire our cameras, also reps the GE system so maybe it is a combination of mis-application and misuse is the problem.
(Added Aug 31/09) This company should be run out of business. I have never been such a dissatisfied customer in my entire life, and I'm a pretty easy going individual. I have the same story as most others who have been enduring agreements with Protect America for more than a year. Purchased equipment and signed 3 year commitment on 03/08/06. System was inoperable within a year (the alarm started going off randomly... couldn't shut it off and had to unplug the entire thing). Tech support was no help and require ridiculous rates if a tech needs to be dispatched. Customer Service is not a part of their language. The reps are rude and not helpful. I dutifully paid my 3 years of non-existent service anyway. When I called to officially cancel my agreement yesterday, I was told I would have the pleasure of paying for another year because contracts are auto-renewed if notice isn't given within 60 days of termination date. Run far, far away if you're considering doing business with these jokers. For us that were suckered in can somebody say "Class Action?"

(Added Aug 23/09) (Updated Jan 22/10) This is the WORST alarm system. Not to mention the company itself. They are a total scam!! We have been paying for service for 2.5 years now. Our system only worked for a few months. We have had it serviced several times and it would work for a few days then stop again. Please don't purchase this system. They make you sign a contract for 2 - 3 years....don't do it. Update: This is just an update to my first post...The alarm system and the company is still a total scam!! Since my last post my contract with them has ended. It took me 4 phone calls and 3 emails to get my policy cancelled. Remember, when your contract ends you need to cancel it 60 days prior to your last month of service or else they will reistate your contract for another 3 years. In the 3 years we had our system it only worked for around 6 months. We had is serviced at least 3 times. Don't get this system!
(Added Aug 18/09) (Updated Jan 22/10) This is a scam company. The provide cheap equipment that never really works, customer service is apalling, I have called numerous times to cancel, and everytime I call they say my contract date is another year out. Signed up for a 2 year contract, and now in my 4th year with NO equipment that has never worked. STAY AWAY from Protect America at all costs. This is not a consumer friendly company. They just want to railroad you into contracts that renew automatically and tell you just enough to keep you drug along for the ride. Update: They did eventually calling me back after I sent an email to their CEO via the web site. I ended up getting a call back and the only way out was to pay for half of the new term they had automatically renewed me for. I took their offer of like $120 buyout to basically get the problem to go away and make sure they could not do it again. The issue is resolved from that perspective, but I still highly suggest people be very wary of the business practices of this company. I personally would suggest everyone stay away and go with a different company with a better reputation.
(Added Aug 13/09) I originally accepted Protect America when I purchased my home; three years later, I received a notice that I was to deploy to Iraq for duty. I did not contact the company until I was able to settle down, which was after the 60 day window had expired. I have written letters to the Corporate Office as well as the Business Office and no one will respond other than to insist that I pay the past due amount. I informed them that for three years, even though I stopped using their service after 14 months because they were no where to be found as far as Customer Service, I religiously paid my bill and do not intend to pay after the three year contract service period. I am still fighting and have informed them that I will begin paying $5 per month until the debt is paid off. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY IF YOU DO NOT INTEND TO PAY FOR A VERY LONG TIME!!!!!
(Added Aug 12/09) Had my system for about a month now. Works fantastically! I couldn't have found a better system. I love that it was free! Protect America is the way to go if you're searching for an alarm.
(Added Aug 3/09) Customer service has been excellent; questions were answered, expectations set. I contacted numerous security companies. Protect America sales rep was the most knowledgeable; he was influential without being 'pushy'.
(Added Aug 3/09) Hello. I actually work for a different alarm company, but I have service from Protect America. I like the equipment (GE has great alarm products). I went with protect america because their price was better than what I was offered with my employee discount. I have never had any issues and I think their service is good.
(Added July 28/09) Protect America made the purchase of our home security system a breeze! They were very professional and knowledgeable about the equipment we purchased. I am thankful they helped me give my family peace of my mind. I am an active duty Marine that spends quite a bit of time away from home and will now have one less thing to worry about while deployed!
(Added July 28/09) The actual system seems good enough--it randomly beeps on occasion and the time doesn't stay set correctly but otherwise, not too bad. However, Protect America has the worst customer service I've ever had. The representative actually said something to effect that if we wouldn't do something they suggested, we might as well rip it off the wall and burn it. Poor form and inexcusable service. If you're looking for good service, go somewhere else.
(Added July 28/09) I am an unfortunate customer of Protect America. I paid my monitoring bill for one year up-front. And lo-and behold, after 3 months they want another years payment - a full 9 months in advance! I wish I could cancel the service now. DO NOT go with Protect America.
(Added July 22/09) I purchased one of Protect America's alarm systems yesterday morning. I was totally satisfied with the service that ***** provided...I have already sent emails to two of my friends suggesting they call and have Protect America alarms installed. Big thank you to Protect America. ***** was great...he provided info on all the systems and I chose the one that benefits me the best...I felt very enlightened when we rang off...being satisfied with a product that one can be "stuck" with for three years is extremely important to me...and customer service is the most important service that can be provided...so many companies have forgotten what CS means...glad Protect America hasn't.

(Added July 16/09) My wife and I got back from the movies this afternoon to find our backdoor smashed in and our place trashed. Not much missing but everything was destroyed. Probably a few punk kids. The officer recommended Protect America. I called and signed up for a free bundle that covers most of our entrance points. I paid for overnight delivery and should be here tomorrow morning. I am impressed with their price and service so far . . . still angry about the punk kids though. My tip for everyone . . . if you do not have an alarm you should get one.
(Added July 7/09) I just signed a contract with Protect America. I was pleased with the offer and the rapid delivery. I hope their service remains as great as it has been thus far.
(Added July 2/09) I got a great deal from Protect America. I got 10 entry points for my windows and doors and saved almost $500. I looked at ADT but they wanted to charge me $99 for install plus they only offered 2 entry points plus a keychain remote control and motion detector. (of course the $99 fee is AFTER a $200 rebate...so that's a lot of money out of pocket). The ADT offer was not nearly enough to cover all my windows. ADT monitoring was $42.99 a month and Protect America offered it at $34.95 a month. I looked at Brinks and Protection One too - but nobody could beat the offer that Protect America had. The customer service at Protect America is top notch. I love the GE security system too.
(Added July 2/09) I liked the people and I loved the price. They were very clear about the terms of the contract and **** waited on the line while I read through the whole thing. No complaints from me.
(Added June 24/09) If you are looking for an alarm company listen up. I own numerous rental properties and have had many alarm systems from various companies. I have had many terrible experiences with tenants destroying equipment, false alarms, warranty issues, companies going out of business, and just plain rude employees. Recently, I installed two alarm systems in a duplex that I own. (Yes, I installed them myself). The alarm systems were from Protect America. I have to tell you . . . I was thrilled with the service that I received. It was also the least amount of money that I have ever spent on an alarm system. I was concerned about the customer installation process, but felt much better when I realized that the alarm systems were practically plug and play. I spent about 25 minutes in each unit and Jason from customer support stayed on the phone with me the entire time. 5 stars!

(Added June 10/09) Crooks! Do not sign up with this company. Their customer service is a joke, try to have them come out and look at your system if it is not working properly. Also, do not sign the contract or please put in a cancellation notice the day you sign as your contract will be automatically renewed after 2 years without your authorization. They say this is read to you but it is not! Save yourself the aggravation, do your research and you will find much better companies. Also, they have a low rating with the BBB and over 1000 complaints against them.
(Added June 6/09) Protect America has always served us well. I am not sure why people have had problems. We have never had any problems and only have the best things to say about Protect America. They were there last summer for us when my mother-in-law had an accident. She managed to press the panic button and the EMS department was dispatched right away. I am thankful for our alarm system.
(Added June 1/09) I was very displeased with the Simon XT and Protect America. Terrible Company and equipment. The sensors are sub-standard at best! The motion sensor is the worst I have ever experienced and I have had ADT and Brinks. You can run past the motion without setting it off. I wonder how many people do a system test on there own before the three day cancellation clause? The monitoring they set you up with is a joke and customer service is even more laughable. Try to get a service tech to uninstall it. I would caution anyone to beware of this company...PLEASE!

(Added May 23/09) I have worked with Protect America for years. We are required to read the terms and conditions to you before we send the system out. On top of that our customers have to sign the agreement online with the terms and conditions in plain sight for you to take the time and read it over before you commit to anything. Please do yourself a favor and read it over, save yourself a headache, and us as well.
(Added May 15/09) This company is a joke. I was basically conned into signing up with them. I fulfilled my three year contract and called at the end to find out how to cancel. They simply said to send a letter requesting cancelation. Ok, did that. Then they tell me my account automatically renewed for a year. ??!! Apparently I was supposed to send the letter 60 days before the contract end. Why wasn't I informed about this period? Because they are crooks. Now, I'm moving and do not need or want their "services", but they refuse to cancel. Of course, there are never any managers available to speak with. DO NOT get invoved with this headache of a company.
(Added May 15/09) We have ProtectAmerica at our home in Palm Springs. They are very responsive. We just invested in a rental property in Austin and are adding their alarm system there as well.
(Added May 15/09) I have been with Protect America since 1994. Service has been great. I have nothing at all to complain about. Actually, I came across this website while trying to find some information on Protect America for my daughter. She is buying a new house this summer and I have been trying to convince her to get an alarm system. If she is smart, she will listen to me and go with Protect America.
(Added May 12/09) Protect America has been my alarm company for about 4 year now. I have not had any problems. I like Protect America and I don't think I will ever switch service. I came across these reviews while getting some info for my mother-in-law. I just wanted people to know that Protect America is a great security company. My tip for people - - read any contract before you sign it. Don't be afraid to ask questions. If you understand what you are signing, then you will not have any problems down the road.

(Added April 24/09) Stay away from this company and beware of the contract you sign! This company has an automatic renewing contract that requires you at least 60 days notice when cancelling. I'm a long time loyal customer and on my fifth year, how do they reward me? By charging me the usual pay even though i wasn't being monitored. It turned out that my control panel wasn't sending a signal to the monitoring station for few months now and they never informed me. They were not proactive in getting it fixed too. They refused to send somebody to service it since "they don't do that". I tried to cancel my service but i was told that i didn't give them enough time (they insist on 60 days according to the contract). So now im stucked with a crappy non existent security monitoring and paying almost $40 dollars for it.
(Added April 24/09) The system protect america gave me is junk. Robbers came in picked up the Simon XT and through it on the ground it shattered in to hundreds of pieces. The cops were never called. I pay 50 dollars a month for something that can be picked up and smashed into oblivion and never call the police. Call a real security company wireless panels are a scam made to skip out on a real technician.

(Added April 1/09) Protect America has been around for a while. I had come across their offer while under contract with ADT a few years ago. My contract with ADT ended recently and I changed over to Protect America and GE security. Everything has worked out great. Paying a bit less with them and the equipment does the job.
(Added April 1/09) I am a junior at SU and finally living off campus. I came across this site while searching for alarm company reviews. I read reviews on ADT, Brinks, and Protect America. I ended up going with Protect America. They were super friendly and had the least expensive deal. Equipment came fast and the self install was a breeze. From some of the stuff I read on this site, I expected there to be a ton of hidden points in the contract. I was ready to call my sales agent out, but they explained everything to me. They even put a manager on the phone to confirm the terms and conditions a second time. The contract is really straight forward and the service was amazing. I was really impressed by Protect America.
(Added Mar 12/09) Ok... even though I am having some issues with Protect America... they DON'T have a license in Ohio for Smoke/Fire Alarms... this morning while at work I got a call by someone at Protect America that the alarm had gone off at my home... well I called my wife who said she forgot and opened a window... and ran to shut off the system but even after doing that Protect America gave me a call and asked for the Password... and then asked if they should call the police and I said no... but then they told me to call my wife and then if needed call them or the police from there... GOOD JOB Protect America... I will give honest feedback when warranted...
(Added Mar 6/09) I just recently signed up with Protect America and I have to say that the gentleman was the most knowledgeable person I have spoken with in a long time. He answered all of my questions and waived many fees for me. He made me feel sure of the service and told me about all of the little things such as the 60 day clause and any cancellation policies. Everything was crystal clear and obvious, nothing was hidden from me and I read the entire contract. This was the company that gave me the most information. I'm glad I signed up with them and I'm looking forward to peace of mind.
(Added Mar 3/09) (Updated May 27/09) This system sucks! Protect America did not protect my family. We were robbed yesterday and the they had all day to help themselves because my "security" system failed. And to top it off, Protect America wants to profit off of it because the low life thieves cut the wire and broke my box, the alarm company tells me it is not covered. I have to pay $309 to replace the box! Protect America are thieves too! 3 Month Update: They did not resolve anything. I had to pay the $309 for the new box. Then today, I find out that I was originally told my contract was 24 months and now it is 36 months. I called because I wanted the system to be transferred to just my name. My husband and I were both joint but he no longer lives with us and is not allowed in the house. I need my alarm to protect us more than ever. Well, they said they can't do that without proper credit nevermind the fact they have been drafting their payments from my account that he is not on. They have no problem taking my money, but they can't seem to protect me and my kids from the one person we need protecting from.
(Added Feb 17/09) I live in a bad neighborhood; and I mean BAD. I called every security company at least twice before deciding on Protect America. We have never had any problems with them. Customer support is wonderful. Our alarm really makes us feel better.
(Added Feb 11/09) (Updated June 1/09) DO NOT BUY! The system is a piece of junk and the contract is written so you have to pay for it whether it works or not. This company should be sued and put out of business. It's a good lesson in READ THE CONTRACT before you sign it. It's my lesson and it's going to cost me a lot of money. 3 Month Update: Protect America is a consumer scam. I have not changed my mind. Yes, they were willing to work with me on the alarm system--not canceling the contract-I have been that route before. I am not a technician and have no desire to spend hours on the phone with a piece of junk equipment that will fail within days if you are lucky enough to get it to work at all.

Customer service has been good... some seem more knowledgeable then others but I got my system in fine. Two weeks after having the system in I have added a motion detector, wireless keypad.. (LOVE IT)!!! and two glass breakage modules.... they have been very helpful in getting the whole system working... I am very happy with them.... |
(Added Jan 26/09) (Updated May 27/09) Consumer beware! Protect America is by far the worst company I have ever done business with. There customer service is substandard and the staff is rude. They will continue to charge you long after you have stopped service. Under no circumstances would I recommend this company to anyone. I encourage anyone wanting to do business with this company to research the reviews posted to the internet. If I can spare one person from falling victim to their shady way of conducting business than I have done my job. 3 Month Update: My issues with Protect America have not been resolved. They continue to be unresponsive to my emails and telephone calls. I am contemplating legal action against them.
(Added Jan 12/09) Protect America is outstanding! We have been with them since the beginning. I believe we contracted in 1993. Their service has always been spectacular and they have always been very responsive. They even upgraded our old system last year when we renewed our contract. What a gem! I definitely recommend their service.

(Added Dec 20/08) Protect America saved my grandmother's life! She had a heart attack last night and managed to press the button on her medical safety necklace. They called my mother and I right after calling for an ambulance. She is in the hospital still, but doing okay. If it were not for that alarm, none of us would have known. I had to write this comment because my grandmother could have passed away if it were not for Protect America. I recommend this company to everybody!
