(Added Jan 20/12) That is the worst installation I ever have seen in my life.  The people they came in my home are glue less in running wires. They are drilling holes in walls for no reason (maybe they are to lazy to do a correct job) Very armature installation and workers, no professional tools and they have no correct wall covers for there installation.  If someone like to see pictures I'm more than happy to send some.  DON'T GO WITH THAT COMPANY
(Added Jan 16/12) When I bought my system from CPI 3yrs ago the rep never told me that it was a 5yr contract!  I know it's on me for not reading the tiny font print on the contract but if that was told to me I would have never signed with CPI.  After a bunch a problems with my system that they could not resolve they finally let me out of my contract.  They even came by to take, what I thought was mine, the equipment back.  I guess they use the old equipment on new sales??? CPI is a nightmare! I had ASG security put in a new system for me with a camera for absolutley no installation fee and only a 3yr contract.  ASG was prompt, curtious and straight up.  Stay away from what me and my neighbor call CPI - Cheesy Protection Inc.
(Added Jan 9/12) Make sure you read and understand your agreement/contract, before signing with CPI Security Systems, Inc. Do not let the sales representative make verbal promises without getting them in writing. Also, keep a copy of the agreement, because CPI will try to hold you to terms of the agreement, and you will need a copy of the paperwork...(read the whole review)
(Added Aug 24/11) WARNING!  Do not sign a contract with CPI, they lock you in for 5 years.  We purchased a house and after 3 years had to move because our income decreased substantially.  We sold our house and DID NOT buy a new one.  CPI would not let us out of our contract even though we did not have a new home. We moved into my parents house.  They told us we could transfer our service to their house.  But, when my parents signed up, they gave a whole new contract for another 5 years, instead of transferring the remainder 2 years.  THEY ARE SNAKES and they cost $30 more per month than other comparable providers.  STAY AWAY FROM CPI!
(Added Aug 18/11) Have CPI and we are very happy with the company.  The person who called on us was knowledgeable and sold us on the company. We are well pleased we changed our home security to CPI.
(Added Aug 15/11) I purchased from CPI on 6/2011.  60 mo contract.  Never got the system in to where we did not have false alarms.  Camera did not work right.  Motion sensors did not work right.  Had system taken out!!  Contract cancelled.  Motion sensors on add shows dogs walking around on ground, it does'nt go off.  They said because we had cats and they climb on furniture and stairs they could not guarentee false alarms.  If I remember correctly dogs do sit on furniture and climb stairs!  Bad situation. I do not reccomend this company.
(Added July 4/11) I recently had an appointment with CPI to have video surveillance installed.  The representative was absolutely horrible.  Once he found out that I would not be switching my present security monitoring company (which would have been independent of rach other--there wouldn't have been amy monitoring on the video equipment--recording only), he was no longer interested in selling and installing the video surveillance equipment.  He also informed me that CPI would have never made an appointment to have a representative come out if they had known that I only wanted video surveillance equipment.
(Added July 4/11) I was a CPI customer for 3 years.  We had a 60 month contract.  We moved out of our house 2 years prior to the contract ending, but we turned off the monitoring since the house was vacant.  That saved us some money.  Unfortunately, our house was sitting for a year before it sold, but we were able to transfer our service to the new buyers.  Our overall experience with CPI was good- We got a great deal on installation- our sales rep actually gave us incorrect information about compatability and using another company's equipment; the previous owners of the home used ADT and we wanted to save some money by using some of the equipment that was already in the house). When the installers came, they discovered that the system that was in our house was too old for it to be used, and wanted to charge me to have to upgrade the system and use the new equipment. We got the sales rep on the phone, and he accepted full responsibility for the error, and we were not charged for the "upgraded" system that they had to install.  The equipment did not always work properly, but their customer service was helpful and solved the problem.  They were proactive in their check-ups, as every so often we'd get a phone call verifying our records and to check to make sure our system was being monitored correctly.  They are not perfect, but I would use them again if I lived in the service area.
(Added June 14/11) After being with cpi for 10 years we decided to cancel to downsize our monthly expenses. After speaking with the rep, and them trying to sell us a different package for more money (included cell phone monitoring since we also cut the expense of a home phone line - and therefore were not being monitored by cpi) we declined and set up a time for them to collect their monitoring equipment  - which we supposedly owned after 5 years (apparently not).  We were told we owed $150 and would receive an invoice - much to our shock we received a bill for $1600!!  Apparently they renewed a contract when they replaced a defective keypad and expected the entire amount, and have since turned us over to a collections company after 2 months of trying to work out the disputed amount.  Which each time on the phone with a representative they said "oh yes, I see that here in the notes, it should be $150"  to which I replied "send me a final invoice, with that amount stated and i will pay it" great service from a company that you are supposed to trust with your families safety.
LOOK ELSWHERE for an alarm company!!!!
(Added May 3/11) I have been with CPI since my house was built in 2002.  I never had a problem until about a year ago when I called customer service and requested assistance to clear an error code on my keypad.  The representative asked if she could call me back because she had an emergency.  I received a call back over 20 minutes later and I was not able to stay for the phone call at that point.  I informed her that I would have to call back later when it was more convenient for me.  She immediately came back at me with, "Do you want to do this or not?"  I got so angry I told her that I did not 'want to do this' and hung up the phone.
This year I decided to go with another company and update my 10-year-old system.  I called CPI customer service to cancel and they put me through the wringer.  They even provided me with non-working fax number to submit my cancellation letter.  I've had to call them more in the last three days than I ever did in the last nine years.  They're also sending someone to pick up my old keypad - Whatever!!  Fine.  I will never go back to CPI and I will make sure all of my friends and family know how difficult they are when they are considering an alarm system company!
(Added Mar 22/11) We signed a 36 month contract back in 2003 with CPI.  Last week we switched to a different provider which came in and replaced our aging CPI system.  After several attempts at reaching someone at CPI to handle our cancellation, we're told we have to give them the control box, or pay $498 dollars.  We were told that it was in the contract.  Unfortunately for CPI we did read our contract and we kept a copy of it.  I've not found anything at all in the contract that states they retain ownership of the system.  In fact we were told on several occasions that once our 36 month commitment was up we own the hardware.  I'm guessing that they've since added something to the contract that states as such, but they're not getting anything from us.  I never once had an issue with them until now.  If this is how they treat you after being a good customer for so many years, there's no way I can recommend them.  Trying to use strong arm tactics like this to scare people from canceling their service. Shame on you CPI!
(Added Mar 22/11) I was a satisfied CPI (customer) for 5 years, that is until I needed to make a change.  When I called to let CPI know I wanted to cancel my service to save money (one less job at my home), like the majority of people in 2011-I was told that I have four more years of a five year contact and that it is my fault that I did not read the contact that was mailed to me-there is no option of paying a small fee to get out-- CPI is in charge and makes sure that you know about it--I was patronized and belittled, and that was all during a 12 minute conversation--I would not recommend CPI, and will make sure that I share my situation with my friends and family.
(Added Mar 18/11) I purchased CPI in 2006 and instructed the sales rep I was replacing my door so I didn't want a contact on the door until I changed it, he stated it must be wired in order for them to install and secure the house, he told me don't worry once the door is replaced they will come out and replace it for free, and the installer came and said the same thing it will be free, but now the door is replaced and they want to charge $50 to come out... Sales rep lied to get a sale...
(Added Jan 26/11) We had ADT previously and CPI is superior in our opinion.  Two-way voice communication with a REAL person is a big plus.  Very satisfied.  Complaints about canceling are the fault of the buyer not reading the contract.  I really like the STAY feature which alarms the house but allows me to stay active in the house without setting off the alarm.  The whole system is hard-wired unlike many that are stick-on sensors. BBB should upgrade this company to A+.

(Added Dec 26/10) I rented a home for 1 year and at the end of my lease term, the owner moved back in.  When I scheduled to disconnect service I made sure to ask the rep about discontinuing their automatic debits for the billing.  They assured me I would not be charged.  The next month they charged me for service that I was no longer receiving. When I called to find out what happened the operator said they did not see me listed as living in the home previously.  (My thought was then why are you billing my account...beside the point) They straightened that out.  Their company has continued to call me and ask how my service installation went of if I'm happy with my current service.  I no longer am a customer and have called them multiple times to REMOVE me from their contact list. Guess who keeps calling!  Aggravating.
(Added Nov 24/10) I think it's interesting what was said about who owns the equipment. I have a CPI Security system and I actually....(read the whole review)
(Added Oct 29/10) This company is deceptive and ruthless! I cancelled my service thinking I was done with my ridiculously long contract only to find out it was much more ridiculously long than I even originally believed. I agreed to pay the ridiculous 75% of the rest of my payments and said they could take draft it out of my account as they had been doing. They did not. Rather a year later I get notice that they are filing suit for breach of contract. I recieved NO prior communication asking me to pay or telling me the final amount was not drafted. Now, I am dealing with a very bully attorney that is charging me collection fees on top of the 338$ cancellation fee. Thanks for the communication CPI. Just had a new baby, guess the attorneys will get her first college fund deposit.

(Added Sept 26/10) (Former CPI Employee) CPI Security is great!  I love my system and all the advantages it provides (i.e blackberry access, phone line back-up, internet access, cameras).  They stand by their statements and the customer service is stellar.  I would never live in a home without CPI Security installed. From prewire to surround sound to security.  In my opinion they are the best in the alarm industry.  As for the contracts it is reassuring to me to have protection as long as I am in the area and if you have any questions just ask the salesrep and always read before you sign for complete understanding.
(Added Sept 16/10) (CPI Employee) (RE: Review Posted Sept 9/10) CPI offers a surge protector in case of lightning strikes. When a customer purchases the CPI surge protector, lightning strikes and power surge damages are covered by CPI. When a home experiences a power surge and it damages the control panel and the customer didn't purchase the CPI surge protector, normally the homeowners insurance picks up the cost. CPI provides an excellent service policy and lifetime warranty as long as a customer is paying for monthly monitoring including service.
(Added Sept 9/10) I've had CPI for 3 years. I've never had a problem except that the woman speaks to us every so often. I usually don't catch what's she is saying. Long story short. My speaker starting humming. I call CPI. They had no idea what it was so I was told to disconnect the power which I did. I finally had a tech come out 4 days later. I have to replace the whole system. Charge 1400.00. Well I came home. Reconnected the power (he never did) all my sensors are working, yes the speak continues to beep but this individual is telling me that it's the whole system. Nothing is working. I opened the actual panel, the phone plug was out. I called CPI. Gave them a piece of my mind. I am not paying 1400.00 to fix it. And if the panel burned out, they need to replace, free of charge. I don't know if this tech did something to it. It's all working except for the beeping. However all the sensors are working, and so is the actual alarm.  Nice to know these are the type of representatives they hire.  I know we are all going thru hard times but get real.
(Added Aug 12/10) We have had CPI for a little more than 2 years now, and I have to say they have been great. The salesperson was excellent and the installer courteous, professional and very proficient. We have set off the alarm a few times over the past two years. On each occasion a CPI operator was on the line within 60 seconds. They even take the time to periodically call you to make sure they have accurate contact information. I've dealt with other security providers in the past and CPI is in a different league. Many of the complaints on this site seem to be over the contract obligations. CPI was very clear that we were signing a 5 year contract and that we would be responsible for 75% of the remaining amount should we move or cancel. Consumers have to take responsibility for understanding the terms of a contract before signing (but then again I guess that is part of the reason for the current housing crisis).
(Added May 28/10) (CPI Employee) CPI offers both a 36 month and 60 month agreement. The benefit of choosing the 60 month protects you from any price increases that may be passed on due to inflation. CPI also offers the ability to transfer service to a new home owner if you sell your home or move with you to your next home.
(Added Mar 22/10) I too want to write about CPI. We have had them for almost 5 yrs, our sales person was excellent. I would not live without my system. In 4 yrs we have had several times when our systems batteries on windows or doors have been low and called we had techs come out and everyone of them were very nice and professional, they did'nt act like we were a problem for them. When my alarm has went off we had very quick response time no longer than a minute before someone was on the line. we have only had it go off one time when I did'nt accidentally set it off and the cops were here in less than 5 mins. and as to cops not showing up, I feel if someone does try to break in and that alarm goes off it will at the very least send them packing just hearing the alarm. I was told my contract would be for 5 yrs when I signed and have never had rude customer service with any questions I have had. Just want to say without CPI I would get no sleep at night and am very pleased with their company 5 yrs or 10 yrs I think the comfort of the system is worth the contract for their protection and mine!

(Added Feb 16/10) CPI is the most deceptive security company. The sales person will tell you anything - including LIES to get you in. one you are in, you are done. Very expensive, crappy service and It is like a cancer, you can't get rid of it.  I for one will NEVER, EVER, EVER use CPI again.
(Added Jan 8/10) Very deceptive company....The sales rep that came to the house was very friendly and told us that although the contract has a certain time frame and stipulations for terminating, CPI is a very small company, locally based and very understanding when problems arise such as job loss, financial hardships, or moving to another house. He said that the company was compassionate to these issues and would allow termination for a flat $100 under these circumstances. I know that I am at fault because I did not get this in writing, but I just wanted to let everyone know that if this statement is made to you, do not believe it. I am suffering through a job loss and contacted CPI to request relief. They were very rude and told me that I was committed to the terms and the only termination right I had was to pay the remaining 75%. If I can't make the monthly payment, I sure can't make the lump-sum 75% payment. I have had to disconnect the phone and by doing so, actually am not protected by CPI. Still have to pay the monthly fee. Just wanted to inform everyone to be aware of misleading information from sales reps and anything offered should be spelled out in detail.
(Added Dec 29/09) I have been with CPI for over 12 years in Raleigh, and have been happy with their service.  Now that we want to cancel the service, we too have been told it going to be disabled when they remove the control box.   Similar to the comment (Added Sept 18/09), I do not even have the contract any longer, but I sure don't recall that they own the control box all along.   NOT HAPPY, and would like to hear if any progress has been made with the NC Dept of Justice or BBB about this.   I'm trying to get a copy of my contract so I can review.   I should be able to have a functioning alarm system after paying them for 12 years!
(Added Dec 12/09) I have a similar situation with the posts of Aug 3/09.   I called today to cancel my service I started in June 2006.  The sales rep lead me to believe I had a 36 month contract.  My husband has become unemployed and I am trying to get trim costs.  He is home all day and we hardly ever use the service as it is.  I found out today I had a 60 month contract and have 18 months left on it.  If I choose to cancel it will cost me over $400.00.  This is crazy and given the fact that so many others seem to think they have a 3 year agreement and find out it is a 5 year agreement, I wonder if this is actually a CPI tactic.
(Added Nov 24/09) I have had the service since 1995. Recently, I have been getting a lot of calls wanting me to 'update my information'. This **** keeps calling during the day (while I'm at work) and refuses to talk to my wife. I have sent them an email stating nothing has changed and if the calls continue, I'll change to another security company. Hopefully this person resume taking their medication and the calls will stop.  Other than this problem, service has been great.
(Added Sept 18/09) (Updated Jan 22/10) I purchased a CPI home security system for $495 about 5 years ago with the understanding that....(read the whole review)
(Added Aug 25/09) CPI is a fantastic and reliable company.  I completely trust the system, with its speaker capabilities, to protect my home.  I have had CPI now for 2 1/2 years.  I knew that there was a 60 month agreement when I signed, as I did read the contract.  I have no problems with the customer service, in fact, whenever I do call, I am speaking to a live person very quickly.  I looked at several companies before choosing CPI, and contract lengths were about the same.  I do not expect to "get out" of my contract, for any reason..as I did sign a contract.  I am planning to sell my home in the next 8-10 months, and have spoken to them about that process, I was told that I would have to pay for a new system at a new home, but the old system would be left for the new homeowners..this is a feature I plan to sell with the home.  The system does, and has always worked great, when I have needed service, they have been very cooperative.  I would recommend this company to anyone, and in fact, my parents, and 2 other relatives have been installed within the last year.  Please do your research, and do not expect any company, any where to let you out of a contract, as they are signed for a purpose.  Know what you are getting into before signing, and you will never have a problem.

(Added Aug 24/09) Shop around before signing with this company. I signed on with CPI last year, and then realized I was moving. I had sold my house and bought a new one. I contacted CPI and notified of them of discontinuing the old service at the house I sold. They told me no problem and to notify them when to come out to the new home. A month later I realized they were still deducting payments from my account. When I contacted them, they stated that they still will deduct payments even though I don't have the system at my new home because I had a 60 month contract and the new owners of my old home have not signed on yet. CPI stated they would have to take out the ADT system of my new home and install all new equipment. This was $370.00. After getting the BBB involved, I still had to pay $1,100.00 to get out of my contract. Be aware and shop around before you sign with them. They are nice when you have them but not when they are not getting their money!
(Added Aug 13/09) We have actually been CPI customers for 6+ years, but when we moved, apparently they locked us into a 60 month contract without outright telling us.  It was written in tiny letters on the installer's sheet.  He glossed over the stuff and just asked me to sign saying it was installed.  I didn't read it as he was standing there, and didn't realize I was agreeing to a 5-year commitment.  What's more, if you decide to cancel before the contract is  up, you are required to pay 75% of the remaining months' payments (tiny print on the BACK of the contract).  This is by far the strictest contract I have ever entered into with a service provider, and to have them not point out what I was agreeing to, I think is outright dirty.  How all of this came to my attention is another indication of the level of customer care.  I was calling to cancel, telling them that due to tough economic times I was unable to continue the service.  They said they understood the economic downturn was affecting everyone, but that made it even more important to protect what is valuable.  They went on to say they would possibly be able to give me 2 months at a reduced rate ($10 off).  I explained this wouldn't really help, since I needed more ongoing budgetary cutting.  Then, they quickly changed their caring, understanding demeanor and informed me that if I cancel, I will have to pay $180.  I'm so close to the end of the term that I'm actually considering paying it just so that I don't have to be a CPI customer ever again.
(Added Aug 3/09) We got a system with CPI in 10/06.  We were told it was a 36 month contract, but lo and behold, when we checked the contract, in tiny letters it said 60 months. I fought this and after many unpleasant communications, the contract was reduced to 36 months.  Then, we moved and we were told it was a TRANSFER.  We were told to sign the contract by the installer, even though it said 60 months because he said it would be taken care of in the office, and he didn't have access to the original contract info nor did he know anything about my communication with ***** ***** in the main office.  Well, guess what, it was a new contract start date!!  They are now telling us we owe them, etc.  I have filed a complaint with the BBB.  These people are crooks.  They say one thing and the contract, in very small letters says something else. I have written to the office of consumer affairs also.  By the way, dealing with them is a lesson in obnoxious communication.
(Added June 19/09) I have been a CPI customer for 2 years. I recently moved out of the CPI service area and went to cancel my service.  They told me unless the new buyer took over the service, I would owe almost $1500!! They said this was in my contract of service.  I remember the sales person "vaguely" touching on this, but of course made it sound very easy to get out of and that the company would be willing to work with me. WRONG!! They won't budge! I could understand if I was moving to another part of the carolinas, but they can not assist me where I have moved! This is ridiculous, maybe it was my neivety as I was new to contracted services, but I feel that I was duped when purchasing from them. So if you are thinking about signing up with CPI please read the fine print and do not get "dazzled" by the fast talk of the sales people!!! You have been warned!
