Reviews For: ADT Security Services
Each one of these ADT customer reviews have been submitted anonymously by present or former ADT burglar alarms clients.  Please note that ADT uses a sub-dealer program, which usually means that a local company will install and service your alarm, and ADT will monitor it.  So a review listed here may not be for or against corporate ADT, but a completely independent local dealer.  If you submit a review, please indicate whether the review is regarding ADT corporate, or the local company who installed your system.

NOTE:  If you are submitting a review for ADT, please specify the local company that installed it, if applicable.

(Added Jan 31/10) I don't think it's hilarious at all.  When companies chose to offer new customers more than they are willing to offer to their existing customers, it's give the message that they no longer care to provide adequate service to the people who are keeping them in business to begin with.  I have been an ADT customer for many years as well. My system is completely outdated/faulty. ADT presented me with 3 options:

*Stay with ADT and pay close to 1K to have my system updated
*Stay with ADT and continue to use outdated and worn out/faulty equipment
*Move to another company and get new equipment at no charge

My first choice was to stay with ADT, get my system updated and remain a satisfied customer...Only to find out....that is not one of the options. It's all about customer service, regardless of the size of the company.... enough said!
(Added Jan 22/10) I think it is absolutely hilarious that people complain about ADT and how they "can't get new equipment and upgrades for free" and are switching or will switch to another company and how "ADT has complaints 20 to 1 against other companies".....well, for all of you who are switching, you will be "new" customers for them for a while just like you were with ADT and when the time is right for upgrades and such, you will be right back in the position you were before with ADT! Secondly, ADT is 20 times as large as any other company, so naturally their complaint level will match that, but the ratio is equal to everyone else.  You need to realize that every company in every industry will have unhappy customers no matter what and that happy customers will not take the time to get on here and write a positive review about their happiness. Enough said.
(Added Jan 21/10) I was an adt customer for 17 yrs.  I paid my monthly service plus a $6.00 service fee. My system required service three times in seventeen years. The last time I was told that the equipment was out dated and could not be serviced. The equipment would have to be replaced at a cost of over $300.00.  Because I was an adt customer I did not qualify for any promotions or discounts. This is company policy.  In seventeen years I paid them $1,224.00 in service fees and $8,000.00 in monitoring fees for a total of $9,180. I guess new customers are more important then old ones. I have changed to Brinks Home Security. New and better equipment and a better monthly rate. Free instalation and a $10.00 a month savings over adt. Please look hard at adt before signing a contract.
(Added Jan 21/10) I have been employed by ADT for the past 20 years, the last 14 as an Commercial Installer. During my career I have seen some people that weren't interested in customer service or taking responsibility for their actions. I can honestly say that the crew I install with is a very diligent, talented, and experienced team. We will do what it takes, whether it's to crawl thru you dirty, damp crawlspaces, tight claustrophobic attics or to work in your office, lab or any other area while trying to minimize the disruptions to your daily business functions.
I understand that many horror stories have been told, just try to keep in mind that the installers are on the front line and are trying to do the right thing.

(Added Jan 20/10) ADT has yet to refund my $1032.78 due to a billing error (double billing) since 11/2006 through 11/2009.  We have been a ADT customer since 1993 and makes no difference.  I am due my refund, as acknowledged by ADT but still can not get my money back.  However, I still getting bills because they had two accounts set up for us.  Problem has been recognized by ADT for over two months.  Also, they set up one of the accounts on automatice checking account withdrawal (which was the beginning of the problems), which we did not authorize (I have the original paper work when the upgrade was done in 11/2006).
(Added Jan 9/10) I called the ADT regional customer service center shortly before Christmas to have the security system repaired in my home as I kept geting fault codes the wouldn't reset. I was given a refrence number and told that a local technician would come to my home the following morning....that was almost three weeks ago!  I am not impressed with the level of service....

(Added Jan 8/10) So frustrated!  Just signed up with ADT two months ago...a week ago we arrived home to find the police showing up a half hour later. There was a problem with our home security system and police were dispatched - when we called ADT they said they tried several times to call us.  We did not have any calls from ADT. After speaking to several managers, they confessed that they called but it went straight to voicemail since the alarm triggered phone to be off.  Their policy is not to leave a message but if they know that the alarm will disarm phone, this policy sucks!  Today i forgot the alarm was on and opened door by mistake.  I went to disarm the alarm but no call from ADT.  Spoke to them and they said that since we disarmed the alarm within 120 seconds, there was no need. I responded what if there was a burglar with a knife to my neck? We told them that this policy didn't work and they replied that we are stuck until 2012. So let me get this straight...they do not provide service they are supposed to and i have no way of getting out of contract?

(Added Dec 29/09) Great monitoring people, but business people, Lord Help Us!  I found out today, after almost four months of simply trying to get my mailing address correct on my new primary residence that they have disconnected my monitoring at my vacation home, due to not paying my bill.  I tried very hard to help them understand the bill is paid through my credit card and has been for the past 10 years.  They said they have been mailing me notices about the problem and trying to call me.  I finally figured out they were mailing and calling to my vacation home which does not have mail service and no one lives there to answer the phone!  After 10 years they still can't get this figured out!  I told them mailing something to the physical address of my vacation home is like mailing a letter to Santa at the North Pole and wondering why he doesn't answer it!  IT DOES NOT EXIST!!  We moved our primary residence three months ago and signed up for ADT again.  I now get solicitation calls from them asking if we want to sign up.  Unbelievable.  If I had not just spent hundreds of dollars having them install new stuff, I would drop them like a hot potato.
(Added Dec 12/09) I can characterize my experience with ADT as one of the most frustrating to date.  My wife and I had a $3,000 Custom Home System installed in September and have had nothing but issues.  Last month a tech visited the house to fix one of the iCenter monitors that had stopped working approximately two weeks after activation.  He walked in and out of the house numerous times, unplugged cat5 cables that did not correspond to the ADT system necessitating that I come out of pocket for repairs to my network, left the house stating that he was going to pick up a monitor and would be back that day.  Approximately 4 weeks later we are still waiting for him to show up.  This morning I learned that it is possible that ADT is going to charge me to fix what has really never worked.  If you are looking to purchase a security system, please look at other providers.  Our sales guy promised the world, none of which has been delivered.  When it is all over I will have spent almost $5,000 in equipment, installation and servicing fees for a system that has not delivered what was promised.

(Added Dec 11/09) I recently signed up with ADT and am satisfied with their installation and service thus far. While in the process of deciding providers I requested multiple quotes. I am really upset with the way APX operates. Since requesting the quote they been hounding me and tried to pressure my wife into believing we signed a contract. What a bunch of high pressure jerks; I would steer clear of this company. The reason I backed away from them was because of their completely one-sided contract terms. I advise staying away from APX even for a quote!

(Added Dec 4/09) I am leaving ADT because they have cost in false alarms fees for the last time.  The alarm went off I turned it off...but the police were still called...I called and asked them to turn back the police.  They asked me for my code - I couldn't remember exactly and gave them my code  - I knew it was either code100, 101, 102 etc...it had been 7 years...anyhow I gave them the right code.  they then asked for the code AGAIN...I went through the same exercise and they said that wasn't good enough.  THEY WOULD NOT CALL OFF THE POLICE.  I end up with a 100 dollar fine and they will not reimburse me.  Therefore they will lose the future stream of income ~500 dollars per year for the next 20-30 years.  Not good business sense and horrible arrogant customer service.

(Added Dec 4/09) Customer Service is TERRIBLE.  I had a "first call" appointment scheduled from 8:00 - 9:00 am today.  At 9:00 am I called ADT to find out why the technician had not shown up on time just to discover that they double booked thier "first call" appointments.  No, first call appointments mean that you are the FIRST appointment for that day.  I took off work (my work day starts at 6:30 am) to wait for the 8:00 am appointment.  Its 10:17 am and no one has shown up yet.  Thats 1/2 day of time off and is unacceptable.  Oh, and the best part, they still want to charge me the $25 service charge fee for the technician to come to my house 3 hours late.  What choice do I have but to pay it?  Well, come 4 more months I will have a choice, to not continue service with ADT and I will go with the different service company.

(Added Nov 15/09) Be AWARE! ADT will never ask you for your social security number (unless you are financing $1,000 or more through the Leasing Company of America). ADT "Authorized Dealers" do ask you for that information to process the application. ADT corporate does not need that for an alarm.  As an ADT manager I do not favor the dealer program as I encounter many instances of incorrect information being transmitted and in turn angry customers.  Dealers pay ADT to use their name to market their services. The monitoring and service is provided by corporate. A dealer may not always be there but corporate will be here forever to service the customer.  Always ask if the sales rep is corporate or a dealer. All corporate employees have ADT badges and in many states have state issued security or public safety licenses.  As for billing problems, if you do not have your issue resolved ask for a manager.

(Added Oct 24/09) I don't get it - they want my business but they just don't answer their phones! I have been trying for several months to renew my contract; yes, I was trying to renew it! I was going to get some additional items added and I couldnt even get someone to call me back! I tried their 1-800#, their local #, a sales rep # and still nothing! Then when I had finally made arrangements for 2 different installations to be on the same date and time, ADT knew nothing about it and only installed 1/4 of what I ordered - 2 weeks later! Plus, the service installer dented our deep freeze top and said he didn't do it! Now I get to wait another 3 weeks for the rest of my system! I spoke with the service manager and it's my word against the service installer, but they will NOT repair the top of my freezer. Oh yeah, lots of telephone transferring. WTF is up with companies like this? However, THANK YOU to BARRY for being patient and helpful!
(Added Oct 15/09) This company has a lot to learn in customer service..and buyer beware, if your phone line is cut, no security-none.  My phone line was cut and for 3 months, I had no ADT service and they knew nothing about it!  Then they played the "extra fees" game.  Extra fee for monthly billing, extra fee for electronic payment, and in your contract in the fine print-they can raise the price of the service anytime they wish.  Then when your contract is finally up, you have to send a letter 30 days in advance, and only 30 days cannot be any sooner; then they claim they did not receive the cancellation letter even though it was stapled with 2 staples to the check!  They continue to bill you for a service that we requested to be cancelled over and over again...Believe me people you do not need the stress of dealing with this company, they are protecting your home while they steal from your pocketbook!

(Added Sept 8/09) Have had ADT for about 10 yrs and have paid a set amount that they said was what I needed to pay. The cheapest available. Then come to find out that I have been paying $10.00 extra for some service plan that includes battery replacement, and annual service calls to check my unikt. Since I never knew about it and am not happy about it all that I have been paying an extra $120.00 a yr I didn't have too I want it cancelled...then they tell me I'm only paying $5.00.  Then an extra $1.00 is being tacked on because I don't get a bill. WTF??? So send me a bill.  Very unscrupulous business practice but I must say that they are quick to call on an alarm occurrance. That is good.
(Added Aug 31/09) ADT is incompetent, inconsistent, and inconsiderate.  I have to speak to a manager every time I call because the representatives confuse me with their babble.  They give me one cancellation figure one day and send a totally different invoice in the mail.  I don't live in the house any more considering I had to move because of a financial hardship but they don't care and keep referring me to the contract.  However, they are willing to negotiate a final contract offer if and when they feel like it.  The service is terrible also.  There is no one checking to make sure if the service is actually monitoring.  I was told to pay a maintenance fee for this reason yet they want me to do all the maintenance.
(Added Aug 24/09) The ADT open face key chain pad with on/off and panic alarm buttons can activate a panic alarm inadvertently, resulting in unnecessary police visits and charges.  ADT does not have a better designed pad with a cover, and would charge $107 to deactivate the panic button on the pad even when they charge $10 a month maintenance fee.  As such, ADT charges appear to be the highest compared with what others are paying to other companies for similar services.  ADT also do not call back if the alarm gets deactivated in 2 minutes.

(Added Aug 24/09) I have been with ADT since 2004 and up to this week, have been okay with the service. A couple nights ago, I had a break in through my interior garage door which did not have an alarm sensor attached to it. That night, I called ADT asking for a tech to come out and add a sensor & was told that I would receive a call at 1:00PM the next day. 1:00PM comes the next day and still no call for the rest of the day.  Upset, I called ADT asking what the problem was. I was told that they were busy and did not have time to call me. As I was explaining to the guy that I was upset not having a call back , he then hung up, and transfered me to a "receptionist" if that is what you would call it. I then talked to a supervisor which could care less about what I had to say & told me that adding another sensor would cost me over $200 dollars. I called the next day asking when my contract was up and was told that it had ended in 2007. I asked the rep. if he was wondering why I was asking and he replied "No , Mam I dont really care". I then called Broadview security and received a est. on a cost for a system. Broadview is much cheaper and is 1,000 times better.
(Added Aug 23/09) Do not, I repeat - do not join ADT for alarm service! Our system will not communicate with the towers and we're unable to get service at all, yet they continue to draft our account and customer service transfers me back and forth, with NO ONE competent enough to handle my claim. I've been working with customer service for over a month-1/2 to resolve this issue but with no results. We are prime candidates for the money-back guarantee, yet they're still researching our claim. If this is what customer service is like, just imagine the loopholes you'd have to jump through if you were actually robbed! Better Business Bureau, here comes ADT...this is ridiculous!

(Added Aug 12/09) We have been ADT customers for 5 years and recently we found out that for the last 10 months our system has not been monitored although we have continued to pay for the service. Yes we changed phone providers, but we never expected ADT to continue to cash our monthly checks and never inform us they are not compatible with our new phone company. Only when the alarm went off and I called ADT did I find out about this issue. ADT response was simply that "we are responsible for checking monthly to be sure the service is still active."

(Added Aug 3/09) I have been an ADT customer for 3 years. The only service complaint is that when our rear door sensor went off ADT didn't try to contact us after getting our voice mail (despite the fact that there are 2 contact numbers listed). Thankfully, our home was safe, but ADT never followed up with me when I inquired why I hadn't been contacted and why police weren't sent to my home.  Prior to this problem in April, there weren't any other problems with the system other than it was more expensive than most of my neighbors' systems.

(Added June 19/09) I have ADT.  Two of my neighbors have ADT.  Both had alarms set, but were just burglarized.  Apparently they were able to yank the box off the wall within 40 seconds disabling the alarm.  One neighbor called ADT and was told there system would not have registered the system being disabled.  They wanted $277 to come out after hours to fix the system.  Two days later an ADT rep was running around my neighborhood pushing their system telling prospective clients that their neighbors had just been robbed.  He didn't think to mention that they had ADT.  Immediately cancelled my ADT and now have BRINKS.  They set me up for a reasonable fee to ensure any scenario of someone trying to break in and disable the system would not work.
(Added June 19/09) My alarm system from ADT was poorly installed in Two ways. One they installed a battery that went out a month after. We called customer service and they told us we would have to go buy one even after we added the extra service in the beginning!  Second, they poorly connected the system according too my AT&T phone service company. I now have "Dial-up quality" DSL because the installer did a terrible job installing the Alarm system.  ADT wants too charge me an $158.00 and as well additional fees for time and labor beyond a certain time. ADT is just another large company who has lost sight of customer service AGAIN. I already pay fees and an additional service fee. I don't want too be gouged more.   I'm contacting a local News station about this as well.
(Added June 18/09) My alarm never did work after they installed it!!!  Going on five months and they wonder why I wont pay my bill.  No service no pay!!  The technician that came out to install it was more worried about watching television with me than working..  The alarm didnt work when he left but said gotta get going.  Came out three times to fix it and only thing they did was sell my wife more stuff and left still broke.  Supervisor said give us one more chance or we will cancel the contract with no fees.  No call no show!!!  Called them three more times and supervisor would not call me back.  Finally got ahold of them, he was rude and said he was going to charge me $1156 cancelation after he said he wouldnt.  No "hey sorry we no called no showed"  What a rip
(Added June 14/09) Here's a thought, Test your system regularly, Pay your bill, and have ADT numbers on hand to a direct department (i.e. Billing, Tech Support, etc.). By doing this, you will make your life a lot easier and real complaints legit. As for the numbers, you have to remember ADT is the largest security company in the US. So if you're calling some random ADT number and then get transferred 8 different times, it is your fault.
(Added June 14/09) The monitoring center at ADT has confirmed that they have been not been in connection with the monitor unit installed at my house since Feb. 2nd week or so.  Inspite of that they sent me a letter about that in MAY LAST WEEK. Now that I know about it I have brought this to their attention at least 5 five in last week and they say some technician will take care of it right away. BUT NOTHING HAPPENS. The customer service agents are rude and don't seem to care about residential customers like me. This is my impression.  I am really frustuated about this.  I am in talks with other company if they can programme the ADT unit I have with their service. Even though I am two-year contract with them if they make a fuss about contract termination I will sue them as I have their letter stating that the service is not in place and has not been in place since Feb.
(Added June 1/09) We added a sunroom to our home and unkowningly the contractor had "cut" the adt phone line.  It was three months before we noticed the small light on the keypad was red instead of green.  We called to inquire.  We found the wire was cut and we had no alarm service and hence, no alarm went off that the wire was cut!! All an intruder has to do is cut the phone line! Then we agreed to pay $34.99 a month in our contract, when we decided to do autopay it was an extra $2 a month.  Then a few years later we decided to change banks and wanted to go back to paying by check monthly....now it was another $1 a month, now $37.78 a month.  Then we recieve the bill with the 37.78 charge, but the bill is still quarterly-$113.34; so they charged us the extra fee, but continued to bill us quarterly! They just add fees as they go along, and you get no service for them.

(Added June 1/09) What many people do not realize is that there are many differences between ADT Authorized Dealers and ADT corporate. These dealers are the people who go to a neighborhood and walk for hours trying to make one sale at a free or mega discounted rate...When you are told your getting a system that normally costs $1200 but for today it is free or $99...there is no truth to that and you are an idiot for believing this. You get what you pay for in the security business. Invest in a good alarm that will protect your home family and possesions from burglary, fire and CO. You dont just go out and buy a home alarm and expect it to perform all of this accurately. I love ADT and they have a customer for life.

(Added May 15/09) My store has been paying ADT for last three years. However, it will be the last month with them.  Tonight, as the first accident ever, my store was stolen after door windows was broken. No alarm went up. The alarm started to beep when I came into the store through broken window. Called the ADT service, checked system, found everything was OK. Probably their motion detects were not sensible for the intrusion. I asked them to send me a tech. The earliest slot is 6 days away from today. Very disappointed. Will look for a better security company tomorrow.

(Added May 14/09) My local ADT rep was great, but the customer service that I received from ADT corporate was terrible.  They take forever to answer their phone, then they transfer you numerous times before you get to someone who can actually help.  When I tried to move my system I got so feed up with all the fees and un-returned calls that canceled my service completely.  I would rather pay a cancellation fee then continue my business with ADT.

(Added April 23/09) (Updated Aug 12/09) We had ADT for 10 years. On August 14, 2008, a fire destroyed our house. While the ADT hourse alarm went off, our system never contacted Central Station (even though Central Station called the house five days prior to the fire to let us know that one door sensor was not working!), and thus the fire department was never called by ADT. ADT claims no liability.
