Protecting Basement Windows From Break-Ins:
Please keep in mind that some of these methods will not enable you to use the window as an exit in the event of an emergency such as fire. ALWAYS have a viable exit to use during a fire.
Scissor Gates
Scissors-type gates and sturdy hinged metal shutters (right) can be padlocked from the inside yet opened easily when desired. Be sure to keep keys nearby but out of sight-and reach-from the outside.
Window Grilles
Standard or custom made grilles mortared into the foundation (right) give basement windows a behind bars look-but they provide peace of mind in high crime areas. For even more security, use glass blocks to wall up the openings completely. Both of these methods eliminate being able to exit by the window.
A Low-Tech Method
If your windows don’t have locks, drive long screws in to a stop on either side at a height that will allow the window to open a few inches (right). This tactic also rules out using the window as an emergency exit.
Hasp And Keyed Padlock
Thwart break-in attempts by installing a sturdy hasp and keyed padlock (right). Keep the key nearby (but out of reach from the outside) so you can easily open the window for ventilation or in case it’s needed in an emergency.
