As an active customer, I was happy with the service I received from Monitronics but when I was forced to sell my house or lose it they changed. I had 14 months left on my contract when I contacted them thinking that I would be able to pay a penalty and end my contract, which I was more than willing to do. They were totally inflexible and would not give me any break on the remaining balance. I tried everything; I moved into a rental and was not allowed to add an alarm system, the new owner of my house didn't want to continue the monitoring, and I didn't know anyone who wanted to install a system and take over my contract.
After a few months of making payments for a system I didn't even have anymore I tried talking to them again. They were rude and totally cold and insensitive to my recent financial hardship. I begged them to find some way to help me. They said the best they could do was give me 20% off of the remaining balance. I had to borrow money from my school account (I am a graduate student living on school loans) to pay the $298.67 balance.
I continued receiving statements and began getting threats of collection after I paid the account off. I called them several times and was assured that it was taken care of. In one call the person I spoke to apologized for my distress with Monitronics and said that if he had spoken to me before I paid the account off he would have reduced the amount I paid even more but now that it was paid there was nothing he could do. That was like having salt poured into an open wound.
Finally in January, after many more calls, I received a letter from them stating that I had paid the account and my contractual obligation to Monitronics has been met. NOW I get a letter from a collection company stating that I am delinquent in my monthly payment. I have worked hard to pay all my bills on time to maintain a good credit rating and now this, for an account that was paid in full in November. What is the problem with these people haven't they heard of computers or even telephones so that they can talk to each other. I will have a home and an alarm system again someday but I will pay twice as much per month to another company just to avoid Monitronics. If you are thinking of using them STOP and run the other way.
