Opportunity mostly refers to any open invitation that's hard to ignore-such as an open door or window-an empty garage with no vehicle in the driveway-a darkened house with no signs of anyone being home.
Time refers to mid to late afternoon, which is when a vast majority of burglaries are committed. But, it can also relate to fixed routines that can be observed, such as taking the kids to school, or picking them up after school. Burglars can quickly recognize such predictable windows of opportunity and take advantage of them.
Other Ways To Protect Your Home:
ALWAYS arm your security system (if you have invested in one) when you leave your residence, even if you will only be away for a short time.
Properly displaying your alarm window decals (provided by your alarm company after installation) will reduce your risk of a break in by forty percent.
Install security bars or laminated glass on windows that aren't protected by your security system.
Lock your doors, even when you are in the house. About half of all burglars enter through unlocked doors or windows.
Consider installing "motion sensing" outdoor lighting. Light is one of a burglar's worst enemies.

Never call attention to expensive purchases. Cartons for high-end electronics like TV's, DVD players, stereos and computers can act like beacons when sitting out for trash collection. Use a box cutter to reduce the packaging, and place them in opaque plastic bags for garbage pick-up.
Don't come home to a dark house. Either leave lights on when you go out, or install automatic light timers.

How To NOT Become The Target Of A Burglar:
Take Control Of Your Home's Security! Most home burglaries are committed by opportunistic amateurs who watch for easy targets in affluent neighborhoods. They look for three things: Opportunity, Time, and Concealment.
Bottom Line: Keeping your home safe from criminals isn't difficult. All it takes is common sense, attention to details, and properly using your home security system to put you in control.
Concealment refers to shrubs or other landscaping that might block the view of neighbors, but also includes poorly secured doors or windows that can be breached in five-to-ten seconds without much noise or effort.
