Home Security From A Private Investigator's Perspective:
Home Security Employees Speak Out
I am a Private Investigator.

I spend oodles of time hiding in plain sight and spying on regular people.  People just like you, who think that their life is safe and secure, people who seem to be unaware of the simple mistakes we all make in our daily routines, which compromise the security of our homes and of our neighbourhoods.  Speaking as one who has spent a wholly unreasonable amount of time sitting and watching the comings and goings of Mr. Everyman, I can say with a great deal of conviction, that your home is about as safe as a cooked roast on the floor in a room full of hungry dogs, but the good news is that you have the power to change that.  A home security system, one that’s professionally installed and competently monitored, is a key component to the effective security of any household.  However, speaking as someone who’s just about seen it all, the best home security strategies don’t stop there....
The 3 Zones In Your Home's Security Strategy:

Imagine you’re looking at an aerial photo of your home and neighbourhood, now using a red marker, draw three concentric circles over your house.  The first circle encompasses the interior space of your home; this is known as the last or close zone of vulnerability in a home security plan.  The second, the middle zone, should encompass the borders of your property (i.e. your yard, or in the case of apartments or condos, the area just outside the door(s) to your living space.)  The third, the outer zone, covers a large portion, if not all, of your immediate neighbourhood, including the homes of your neighbours and local businesses and even park areas.

The First Zone: Your Residence

The close zone is the one typically covered by a home security system.  Its components include devices such as door and window sensors, glass break sensors, and motion detectors.  Covering every possible entry point into your residence with door and window contacts, glass break detectors, etc. creates a “perimeter barrier”.  This simply means that the alarm is triggered before the intruder enters your home, rather than after.  Upon hearing the alarm's siren, most intruders will “cut their losses” and flee.  Interior devices (such as motion detectors) should be strategically placed in your home to act as back up to your alarm's perimeter devices.  Remember though, that the majority of households which rely on a home security system as the sole component in their security plan can possibly be under-protected.
