(Added Jan 16/11) I had service with Guardian for 11 years.  I bought another house and moved.  I was planning to keep the alarm system and reinstate it after I rented the house out.  I attempted to stop service untill the new tennents were in and was told that I would be charged for 2 more months.  Thats the thanks I get for being a loyal customer for so many years.  I will be going with safemart from now on.  They have monitoring for as low as $9.00 per month.
(Added Sep 23/11) My husband attempted to cancel this service via telephone in May.  He was told that our 3 year contract expired in July.  The rep said he needed to fax in a written notice--which he did.  However, they never canceled the service and continue to bill our Amex card!  When we called today to resolve, the rep said they never received noticed so they automatically renewed the contract for another year!  The rep was rude and practically called him a liar.  We are now trying to find the written documentation to prove our intent to cancel.  This is ridiculous and I would never recommend this company to anyone.  What a rip-off.  Auto-renewal - really?????  Thank goodness for the internet and all of the social media outlets so consumers can share their experiences.  It won't be long before this company goes out of business---or at least we can hope!
(Added Aug 13/11) I just got off the phone with them on termination. They have all the predatory tendencies. I told them I will go to my state's Attorney General and expose them on all Internet boards plus TV channels if they don't cancel my plan without a fee.  This is America, if your services are not wanted, they are not wanted. Go to the drawing board and come with services that are wanted. This is like financial rape, Guardian is forcing itself on people who do not want it's services. I am not going to pay this bill, how can I pay a bill for a service that I did not even activate?  Whatever security system you get for your home, unless you want to be locked for 60 months with not so much as a trial period, forget about a money back guarantee or warranty, DO NOT GO WITH GUARDIAN.

(Added May 7/10) For almost two years I have tried to cancel  the contract.  Guardian says they have not recieved my letter or my e-mail and renewed the contract.  After the first try, when the contract came up for renewal told them again to cancel the contract and I even cancelled the credit card they were drawing against in hopes they would stop the service if they could not get the money.  Guess what, they just keep sending me a bill.  I have called them and told them to cancel, given them the password and all but they will not cancel.  Any one got a suggestion on what to do?
(Added <April/08) First, I got ripped off from one of the company's sales reps. The first contract he gave me was more than what he stated the monthly costs were. So when I told him such, he immediately brought me a new 'correct' one. I was stupid in that I didn't read through it the second time, and as it turned out, it was the same price as the first. Mea culpa.

So I paid the company the higher price for 3 years, the term of the contract. I mailed the company a letter stating that I wanted to cancel my service at the end of my contract. They told me that they never received one. Imagine that. I didn't send it certified. They took advantage of that, and automatically renewed the contract. When I kept getting billed, I called them, and asked me to send them a cancellation email. I did that same day. I still kept getting billed. In fear of damaging my credit, I paid two additional months and late fees, hoping this could get resolved soon. It did not, even though I had been told it was cancelled. 7 months after I cancelled, I got notice today that my service was cancelled, but that I owed the company for the entire year! So I called the company again today, and explained the entire situation to them (again), starting from the rip off from their sales rep (she stated that he no longer works for them - so what??) So she told me that she would talk to her manager and call me back. About 3 hours later, she called back, offering to settle for about 40% of the total price. I told her that I wasn't going to pay another dime to them. I reported them to the BBB, and then started looking around at other reviews - many have been posted on other sites with very similar issues with this company. The company is HQ'd out of Tulsa, but offers these services all over North America.  My advice - use someone else.
(Added <Apr/08) It is an overwhelming task to pick the "right" security system provider. That being said, I am beyond satisfied with my choice. Guardian Security Systems not only used the best equipment available, but also installed and maintained the system with the utmost professionalism. I am thoroughly impressed with the local provider, and I would never go elsewhere to protect my loved ones.
