Temperature Sensors
A temperature sensor alarm will alert your alarm panel if the ambient temperature reaches a certain high or low level. This device is invaluable to anyone who owns a cottage, cabin, trailer, or commercial building that endures harsh winters. For "snow birds" who like to travel south for the winter months, or those who own a cottage in a northern climate, a temperature alarm acts as your extra "insurance policy" against winter weather damage. If your furnace or electricity fails, your home is susceptible to below freezing temperatures that can cause pipes to burst and leak water, damaging drywall or other structural elements with dampness and mold. By the same token, the unit will notify you if the ambient temperature goes above a certain level, useful for those who leave pets at home alone, or those with expensive wine collections, etc.

Many of us who own summer homes or cottages that are a considerable distance from home find it hard to check up on their properties on a regular basis. If you already have an alarm that is monitored for security and/or fire emergencies, you can easily add the following devices to your system that will provide you with even more peace of mind during the "off" season:
Flood Sensors
Flood sensors are great for those who maintain a summer home or cottage that is only occupied for a few months out of the year. It will alert the homeowner to septic backup, exploding pipes, cracked and leaking foundations, and storm flooding. How do they work? Very simple. You may notice in the graphic at right two electrical metal contacts separated by about half an inch on the device itself. When the device (which is affixed to the floor) is immersed in water, the water will complete the circuit between the two contacts and send a signal to the alarm panel. The system then sends an alarm to your monitoring station, who in turn alert you to a flood situation.
