Top 5 Complaints Of Home Security Customers
I purchased a CPI home security system for $495 about 5 years ago with the understanding that after the 3-year contract was completed, I would own the system and could operate independent of central monitoring or paying a monthly fee.

When I called to cancel, I was told that once they disconnect the system, it will not operate. This is crazy. The system has an alarm, two keypads, a motion detector, a panic buttom and door and window alerts, all of this was paid for with my $495 plus a 3 year monthly fee.  The contract said nothing about CPI owning the "control box". According to another security consultant, the CPI system and every other system can operate independently, but they won't allow this because they are interested in your monthly fees and not your security. I have filed a complaint with the NC Department of Justice and I'll let everyone know how I get this resolved.

Update:

(I'm) back and the news is mixed. The NC Department of Justice simply acted as a "middle man" doing nothing but forwarding letters between each party. Final outcome was that I had the CPI system completely removed and replaced with a Honeywell system from Triangle Security (Vector Security). The CPI system is worthless without their proprietary security codes. Yes, I own it but it is worthless unless it is monitored. I tossed it in the garbage.

Yes, I paid some additional money to replace CPI but my new system will be mine after 3-years and it can be operated without central monitoring. I know that folks have comments, good or bad, with any system but my goal was to own and operate a system without central monitoring. I believe I have one.

This industry needs monitoring by the Government as they mislead and misrepresent their products.
