I have been very satisfied with APX Alarm. The salesman are just that: salesman. They are no different from salesman in any other industry. Actually they are probably a lot more nicer. But as with any salesman, you have to be cautious.
If you don't know how to protect yourself it's nobody's fault but your own. The salesman (in any industry) may word things to get the sale but the contract can't lie. The contracts are actually quite simple.
I also shopped around and APX is VERY competitive in pricing. $39.99 is a very common monitoring rate in the alarm industry and really the big difference between ADT and APX is the fact that you can get much more equipment from APX. For a similar system (ADT uses the same equipment as APX: Honeywell) ADT wanted an additional $650.
For the same contract obligations and monthly monitoring rate ADT will give you about half the amount of equipment APX will. Yeah you can find a company with cheaper monitoring rates (as low as $29.99) but you won't have nearly as much equipment and you will probably be monitored by a mom and pop shop.
Aside from everything else, the inability to protect yourself by reading any contract you sign is your own fault regardless of what any salesman tells you. Regardless of what the salesman tells you, the monitoring agreement can't lie. Plus it is law for any contract to include a method of cancellation. With APX the cancellation notice is clearly printed on the bottom of the monitoring agreement. If you feel you have been lied to you have 3 days cancel.
