I read the reviews of APX here and wanted to throw in my experience.  I had ADT for over five years and each year they would increase the rate. I had a motion sensor and three door sensors. Yet my monitoring went from $40 when it started to right at the end, I received a letter telling me it was going to $70...

That's when APX's salesman approached. Since I was considering cancelling ADT all-together, I welcomed what they had to offer.  Our panel was too old to use with their cellular transmitter, but the sensors were all correctly setup already. He added a fire sensor and two glass-breakage sensors (more on that later).  I had a cat at the time and had no problems under ADT or under APX with pets. And she loved the couch, in full view of the motion sensor, so the others' troubles may be with inexperienced installers.

Speaking of, I do have one complaint. Their glass breakage sensors have been extremely sensitive. While they correctly do not identify a thud from say, a cat missing when trying to jump on the kitchen counter, it does however go off the minute I'd place a glass bowl into the microwave (onto the glass plate) even extremely lightly. So I have to turn off the alarm when at home (not that it is a big ordeal, just something to keep remembering.) (That's one way to have a quick wakeup in the morning. Put the coffee cup in the microwave and rush for the alarm panel and then the phone.)

I've had APX for a year now and have been thrilled. Cheaper than ADT was and even more sensors. In fact, now that the cat is gone, I'm going to add some sensors into the basement (she used to really make disasters happen there, so I never wanted to risk it.)  Yes, the salesman was pushy... but the 5 year contract was upfront. I had ADT for five years and they kept changing the rate, so that was no issue. And the extra equipment was reasonable. My installer from ADT initially didn't know how to deal with plaster walls (and destroyed my thermostat in the process) but the APX installer had no problems, aside from dealing with the hole that ADT had created.
